How to Change Yamaha V-Star 650 Oil + Filter ✅

In this video, I demonstrate how to change the oil and oil filter on a 1998 - 2019 Yamaha V-Star 650. The bike in this video is a 2000 model, but the process is very similar for all the years.
-- What you need --
- 17 mm socket or wrench
- 5mm allen wrench
- 4mm allen wrench
- 3 quarts of 10w-40 motorcycle oil (I prefer full synthetic)
- Oil filter for V-Star 650 (I'm using K&N KN-145)

Appreciate your help with the oil change.... However after 60 degrees in outside temperature Yamaha recommends 15w-40

for me, 10w-40 is easier to find in full synthetic motorcycle specific oil, and unless you're starting your bike in negative temperatures it won't make a difference since a 10w and 15w weight are both good below 0. Both operating temperature weights are 40 so once the bike gets up to temp it will be the same.

always use a torque wrench the cost of not using one could total the bike (blown engine if the plug and oil come out while riding), or stripping out the case threads)

is that weight recommended? I just picked up my vstar and wanna get the oil done asap. I looked on line and it said 20w-40 but I figured that was a bit weird

it all depends on the temp you're riding in. With oil weight the first number is the viscosity at cold temps, and the second is the viscosity once the engine is warm, so any oil that ends in 40 would act the same once it's warmed up. I like using 10w because it moves easier when it's cooler.

You have to remove your exhaust?? Sounds like a major design flaw

It is! 😅 And to get the exhaust off, you have to loosen the bolts for the floorboards. 😂 No more for me though. Relocated both the floorboards and the oil filter. Never taking the exhaust off ever again, and now the oil changes are a half-a-beer job. 😁👌🏻

no, not necessary the oil drains the same level or on the kick stand and you dont need to look at the site glass oil level if you change the filter put in 3 quarts if you dont change the filter put in 2.7 quarts if you dont spill it all over the bike, there is no where else it can go- its IN there, you dont have to check the level if you want to check it, start the bike up so the filter will fill with oil, turn it off, then check it like you normally would, sitting on the bike, with a mirror
