The Sail Switch is the number 1 reason RV furnaces stop working. I'm not kidding, they are the cause of ~%80 of RV furnace woes. So today I'm going to show you how to repair the furnace in your camper all on your own.

Got a Keystone Passport that has classic symptoms of a bad sail switch, but guess what - no external furnace access panel to the front of the unit. You can get to the back of it on the inside under the fridge, but no way to access the switch without removing the furnace assembly! Thanks Keystone for such an intuitive design element. I've ordered an aftermarket access panel kit and plan on cutting through the outside wall to install it - just to get to the sail switch. Thanks again Keystone for such a user-friendly design element. How about a car with no hood - would that fly? Thanks for the informative video Emily!

GREAT job, believe it or not, RVTI did not teach HOW to get the sail switch out and how to test it as you have delineated. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am doing so much on your KZfaq, I will feel EMILY CERTIFIED.

Without breaking a sweat. Well, on my Winnebago, the entire furnace has to be removed from the coach to get to the sail switch or the delay relay. Thanx Suburban! I'll give you a pro tip- The sail switch or the limit switch or the delay relay are the #1 & #2 & #3 problems found with Rv furnaces. BEST PRACTICES- When any 1 of these fail, replace all 3 parts. You will thank yourself some cold as hell autumn night when you are up in the mountains. All of these parts are cheap. !

Yeah it can go either way. If there is an access panel Furnaces can be super easy. If there isn't... well that's another story.

my furnace on my sprinter based campervan works erratically - i suspect a failing sail switch - but this furnace has such limited access I decided to simply install a diesel heater which works so much better

I have an 2004 Winnebago Journey 39K with a Suburban SF-42 heater. My issue is that the blower runs 24/7. Not even turning the thermostat off and removing the fuse shuts it off. I'm thinking that the sail switch might be the problem. I just recently changed the air filter which obviously had not been changed in years. I've only owned the RV for 2 yrs and only this year started using it..............

Okay. I have a 1994 Jayco 1207 pop-up tent trailer. Last winter the thermostat wires melted and almost caught on fire when trying to turn the furnace on. The furnace worked fine before this. I replaced the wire and the aticipator in the analog thermostat lit up like a lightbulb filament and the thermostat was shot. Replaced the thermostat and beefed up the wire guage and the anticipator wire lit up again and seperated. Thought hmm...through a series of trial and error, started throwing parts at it because replacing the 30 year old gas furnace is way more expensive. Replaced the thermal relay and tried to bypass the thermostat and blew a 20 fuse. Replaced the delay relay and tried to bypass the thermostat and blew another 20 fuse. Pulled the motor and motor bench tested fine started right up. Checked the sail switch and it had a dust ball at the connectors. Removed the dust ball and continuity tested...no noise on open and beep when button was depressed. Could that hairball have been causing a short and been blowing the fuses? I have one 20 fuse left before I have to run to the store for more.

Hi, I think I have a sail switch problem too. My two month old (brand new) RV will not produce heat at all. The furnace runs 15-30 seconds, then shuts off without ever igniting. I am a retired industrial electrical engineer. I have no problem at all replacing the switch; my only concern is having no idea where to obtain the correct parts for an RV--they are different from the industrial parts that I am accustomed to and the suppliers of RV parts are undoubtedly different too. BTW - I am thinking of pursuing my own RV repair certification. Would you be open to a short conversation about that?

Honestly the easiest place to find a Sail Switch for RVer's is probably going to be Amazon. Just make sure the numbers on the side of the sail switch match up with the listing and you should be good to go. And Yes I'd love to talk about RV certs. Where are you thinking of going to get yours? I went to the NRVTA so that's all I can speak to, but it was an awesome experience.

2021 forest river arctic Wolfe heater blows warm air just not very hot could this be early signs of the sail switch going out

The sail switch is a binary thing. It either allows the furnace to stay on or it doesn't. It won't affect the temperature of the air itself. Try going to the exhaust vent outside and see if there is HOT air coming out of there. If the air there is HOT, then look at cleaning out your ducting. Your furnace is making hot air it just isn't getting to you. If the exhaust isn't HOT then look into whether you're getting a strong flame or not.

Not yet! But I will totally add that to the description of the video. Unfortunately there are A LOT of different kinds. I think Dometic has 4 different ones they use and suburban has 9.

In your video, you unscrew the switch and magically, the electric leads are disconnected. How do you disconnect the leads? They are wrapped in plastic. I'm not sure how hard I should pull before they're damaged? Firmly pulling, they don't budge.

Sometimes you need to get in there with some needle nose pliers and wiggle them back and forth to get them off.
