Scotty, the original factory-new OEM battery in my 2010 Expedition lasted OVER ELEVEN YEARS because I occasionally used a battery desulfator. Mine was a Battery Minder brand, and I’m sure the Battery Tender brand is equally good. What people need to do is allow it to work for a long time, like for two weeks continuously when you are on vaca, to allow it time to thoroughly condition it. Or, several days of constant attachment, but more often. Mine was still good when I went ahead and replaced it while doing some other maintenance. Amazing. Great for use on boats over the winter, which is usually fatal to batteries left unattended. Love your videos, and especially your honesty.

Scott - Another good idea for storing batteries out of your vehicle is to keep them off the concrete especially a cold concrete by putting them on an insulating material such a s piece of wood or rubber mat. It actually works since storing them on cold concrete has an accelerated effect of taking the charge out of them.

Another great vid! I use a solar smart battery charger for my riding lawn mower. 2 1/2 years now on a 90 day warranty battery! Also , used a smart charger on a car battery that hadn't been used in 2 years. It took 3 weeks but it came back to 95% and is still going strong!

Hi Scotty, I love your channel and thank you for all the great content! I had to comment regarding this video on Deltran's products. The warranty that comes with these units is A JOKE and I learned the hard way when I purchased two of their Battery Tender Plus model. I bought two of these for two different motorcycles... they both died within two years of purchase and the warranty is a joke. "The Battery Tender® Plus battery charger has a 10 year limited warranty, which is unprecedented among battery charger manufacturers." What they don't make so clear is that I am supposed to pay two way shipping for each unit... back when I checked it was about $20 to RMA each unit and $25 to just buy a Battery Tender Jr... so that's what I did. A few more years have gone by and so far those have been okay. The warranty on this particular unit in my opinion is useless... look into that before you invest! If I had invested in one of their high end models that cost me several hundred dollars then of course the $20 to have it repaired/replaced would have been the way to go... but in this case I think charging the customer 50% of the purchase price to warranty an item is just wrong. That covers their cost to replace the unit, they aren't covering anything... they're just selling me a new unit at cost.

👍 I own three! One is the 24v unit for my DIY solar generator...charges/maintains two Trojan 31AGM "Overdrive" batteries. No issues at all. I have one 12v Tender hard-wired (like what you showed on the Triumph motorcycle) to my '14 Silverado. Messing with those alligator clips can be a PITA (they can easily be bumped off and the electrical connectivity isn't as good as the ring eyelet cord).

Great advice. I love Battery Tenders. My original motorcycle battery lasted 10 years. That is not a typo - 10 years. My first lawnmower battery lasted 3 years. With a Battery Tender the second one is at 9 years and still going. GTO battery is now at 7 years. I do not own any stock in them either. And all mine are the cheapest ones except for one cheap waterproof one I got when my motorcycle sat in a carport.

As a retired mechanic I would like to tell you what I do. When in doubt I go to the manufacturers web page and get their recommendations. Seems like it's a whole lot simpler than listening to what other people think. Which is quite different in many cases. For example my cell phone battery tells me to drain it completely 3 times before recharging. It was aftermarket so maybe that's wrong I'm really not sure at this point from everything I've read. So when all else fails I follow the instructions

Got a Jap import Nissan Atlas truck. The 2 batteries used to die every few weeks and I was always charging them before it would go. Was so bad the truck wouldn't even start in winter without charging, it's 1997 and only has roughly 80,000km since it spends most of its life in the shed. I disconnected the radio a month ago and I've had no trouble with the batteries since, even though one of them needs replacing. I started it today first go, just happy it works properly now. It's only used to move ATV's and some youngstock, but it was a pain when it used to always go flat.

This is terrific . My convertible (04 GTC Sebring) .. it sat for many years in a garage .. and the battery .. well it would slowly discharge and freeze .. come spring it was bad. It is hidden the the fender and is horrible to remove, so this would be perfect when I start to store it again over the winter. I love the wires to allow a direct connection .. I guess you couldn't connect it to the terminals this car has in the engine bay, eh?

Scotty Kilmer Oh yes! Another thing, Now I know the thing trickles the battery, will it do much to lithium batteries? I mean lithium batteries already last very long time, Will it do any noticeable effects?
@kuhrd
@kuhrd 7 жыл бұрын
When charging a lead acid battery or any other battery chemistry that off gases hydrogen when charging: If the charger has physical knobs check they are off or set to the correct voltage and current setting. Then connect the leads to the battery. Then verify the charger is set right or turned off before plugging it in. Once plugged in you can set settings and start the charge. Smart chargers are less likely to create a spark when connecting but it's still best practice to make your battery connections before the charger is plugged in and turned on. This is basic battery safety 101! Just because a battery has never exploded on you so far, doesn't mean it never will unless you always follow the safety steps.

Lithium batteries don't lose charge anywhere near the same rate like lead acid batteries... are sure that part isn't just snake oil? In fact charging a lithium to max each time, will reduce it's life.

Son of a Zombie yeah seems like only reason youd need it for a lithium is if charge is super low.
@alexm2623
@alexm2623 7 жыл бұрын
It's true that lithium loses charge MUCH slower, but it DOES still lose it. Some guys will have bikes and boats that might not see use for a year or more just sitting in their garage. My dad for example has 7 motorcycles, so a few of them get "forgotten" and not ridden often - they need a tender even though they're lithium. If you ride it every few months, you don't need one UNLESS you only ride it short trips, in which case the alternator may not fully replenish the battery's charge, especially if you run the headlights on those short trips.

You can make a charger maintainer with any 12V 1A dc supply and 2 clamps. It will take 2 days or more to charge a battery. Old Switching Power Supplies from laptops that put out 13.5V and 3ish amps are idea because they will fully charge the battery in a day with minimum maintaining current.

Scotty, I'm going through a 1 car battery a year and it always seems to be during the cold weather, the last battery i bought i asked them that i wanted a strong battery that would last through the winter... its fall know and the battery is already showing signs of death (mind you, its when the car starts, it gets weaker and weaker, when i drive the car the battery charges back up, if i drive the car every day it starts up fine but if i don't, 3rd or 4th day, the battery start is weak)... is it the batteries they're selling me? what seems to be the issue? 2007 Acura TL base, if you know what the problem is what's the best thing i could do besides brining it to the dealership and getting banged over the head with labor costs

Scotty, I just replaced 6-year-old, 2-year battery from Walmart (a long time for a 2-year battery) with a new 3-year battery from Advance. The new battery is noticeably lighter. Any thoughts?

I charge my deep-cycle marine battery for my boat every month. This might be a better method/ product? This battery is six years old and still works well.

Hey Scotty I have a 2002 Nissan Sentra and it runs hot. I've changed the radiator, thermostat, radiator cap, and nothing still runs hot after a day or to after I refill it and there is no visible leaks no oil discoloration or smoke from tail pipe. Do you have any ideas?

Hey Scotty, Back in the old days. I remember that there was a process of charging old batteries and renewing them back to brand new. Do you know this process.

I believe there is a difference between "trickle", and " Float" chargers, you want a float.Been buying cheap float chargers off E-Bay recently, seem to be working good, around 9.00 apiece, been using them for 3 or 4 years , so far working great. Battery tender is a better product, but the price has skyrocketed lately.

Scott, I was wondering about a separate issue I'm having with my old 74 ford truck. it doesn't shut off normal it stays on when ignition is shut off. I belive the term is "desiling". I've replaced the fuel pump, filter. and I've made sure there's no vacuum leaks or air leaks. but still it likes to keep turning over. any more suggestions? I'm stumped

Hey Scotty, I just installed a dash cam in a new 2016 rav4 and the mechanic adjusted my voltage cutoff to 11.8v would this cause any problems? It was at 12v before but the parking mode wasn't consistently working so he reduced it so it will turn on. Just want your opinion on whats going on and if it will negatively affect my car battery in the long run. Thanks!

na, shouldn't harm anything, other than perhaps trim a little time off the battery lifespan

I have been using float charger from Harbor freight $4.99, it works just fine.

yes, they can work fine, but this technology is WAAY above that, and is really needed if you use any lithium batteries like I have in my bike

I have had multiple Harbor Freight battery chargers die. I'd highly recommend finding a different brand.

I've got an Optimate, which cycles between slightly discharging and re-charging.... They should be plugged into your battery whenever the bike is not in use, and should be permanently left switched on. Mine works great....and a must-have for modern bikes with immobilisers that slowly flatten a battery. Harley Davidson's come with a pig-tail already wired when you buy them new.

You can leave the charger plugged in 24/7 if it's an automatic charger with multiple stages (the most important stage being 'float'). The charger will charge the battery to 100% (bulk and absorption stages) \, turn off then keep it near 100% (float/trickle stage) when the voltage drops.

I live North of Chicago, where winter could be 5 months. The battery gets taken into my house, hooked to the tender and when it turns green, I put the battery and tender in the closet and forget about it until St. Patrick's Day, when I charge it up again. I've averaged 3 riding seasons per bat tree!
