How To Charge Your BMW Battery For Coding (works for F30, F10, X3, X5 and more!)

Keeping your BMW connected to a battery charger is vital when coding your vehicle or flashing new iDrive software. Otherwise, you might find your car shutting down before the job's done. Of course, you're also going to want to recharge your battery if you've run it down, or top it up after replacing an old one.
If you aren't sure how to charge your BMW's battery, Chaz shows you just how simple it is in a BMW F30. The process is similar in other 3 Series BMWs, as well as the 5 Series, 7 series, X3, X5 and more. We always recommend using a quality AGM battery charger. When making changes to your iDrive system, always be sure to use a charger rated 10A or higher.

Most probably yes, as it’s just a standard charger.

Good battery charger will automatically adjust the voltage to your battery

@@LightSpinAnglerfrom the very little research ive done, it seems that 2-4 amps is for trickle charging- 10 for “fast charge” and i picked one up that also does a 50 amp “engine start” from harbor freight for $40 today and i can let you know if its good

@@road_mine8733 i used the CEN-TECH analog model, worked great. I recommend using one because it did pull over 10A the whole time in “fast charge”

I have a BMW 2013 X5. I followed your directions, but I have a problem. When I connect the charger to the AC power, The SUV is beeping as if somebody is stealing the car. What to do?

Hi guys! Is it absolutely necessary to have a 10amps charger? got a CTEK MXS 5.0 that delivers 5 amps maximum... Would that be enough for coding? thanks in advance

We strongly recommend a 10A charger. The charger is there to make sure all modules stay powered during the coding.

I have 2015 BMW X3 with original AGM battery - I have to change thermostat and Its recommended to put it on a charger while running the water pump to bleed the air out of coolant lines so you don't kill the battery. I don't have a charger. Can I use my regular DC bench power supply if I set the voltage to around 13.6 and limit the current to around 2 amps?

Yes, it is possible to do so with your variable power supply, but it requires specific knowledge and abilities. During performance of such a process special safety regulations should be followed. However, it is possible we highly recommend borrowing/purchasing the charger, or calling any local workshop, which will be able to offer such a service.

late to the party, but if your battery is kind of new-ish or in a good state and fully charged, you can probably do this without even a battery maintainer. It doesn't really take that long to bleed the air out

I have a 2A smart trickle charger. Does it matter if I connect the charger to battery directly, or to the jump posts?

If you’re using your charger to jump-start the car, it’s advised to follow the instructions made by BMW.

The point of using the connection points BMW has set up is so you don't bypass the safety and control modules the battery uses to charge and whatnot. Technically, it is physically possible to connect directly to the battery, but our cars are so finicky that it may act up or you could ultimately damage something as a worst case.

Flashing a module simply means wiping all the data saved onto it.

Hello guys, we have wery cold nights below -25celsius and my car is sleeping outside, can i attach charger the same way and let it charge overnight? Yesterday car started showing that batterry discharged start car immideately, so i went for a longer drive and it charged a bit. But i know if its not connected, tommorow it will be dead, so yeah can i let it like that overnight? (F31 2014)

@@bimmer-tech Hi Expert ,I'm new one and have 10amp charger. However it doesn't work well for MH system with 48volt. It has some noise like relay on/off when I plug the charger.Is the charger your recommend compatible with 48volt system on 2022 BMW X3 also?

Correct pretty much same thing, however the placement of the battery could be slightly different.

The negative terminal on an X6 should be either a hex bolt or a straight pin, its location should be somewhere on the side of the engine bay where the positive terminal is.
