Thanks for making this video. Many people SWEAR that any usb device that is plugged into ANY usb wall wart will magically automatically only pull in the amount of volts and amps necessary. That is true of cellphones, they won't pull more amps than they need, but not every usb charging device is suitable for charging every device. Your video clearly shows this, and I thank you for explaining things correctly.

Remember voltage is supplied, current is drawn. The voltage is fixed (after its transformed from mains voltage), current is drawn depending on the resistance of the controller (which is fixed).

Just a note on the dual output chargers. As long as both output voltages are the same, which would be 5V, and the difference is the Ampere, just like my OnePlus Warp Charger rated at 5V=2A 10W and 5V=6A 30W, it's again safe to use them with no worries

I just have one thing to say He deserves more subscribers

1) Usually 5V chargers tolerance is 4.8V - 5.2V it means you can use long cable if your charger has more than 5V out. For example my IPOD charger has 5.15V 2) Some USB cables do not support fast charge. So you can use them with fast charger. 3) As far as I know If data pins (2 and 3) shorted fast charging is activated and you will get 9V

Slight nitpick, but the PS4's usb (or any kind of "power supply") does not *push out* amps, it provides up to a certain amount, and the device that receives it (in this case, the DS4) is actually in "control" of how much it *pulls* . Otherwise, you're spot on. Great video.

Absolutely wonderful... Just to say that any device will ask for a specific amount of current ( Amps) ..So if the charger can give 10 amps at 5 volts , the device will take what it wants only.. Nicely explained vince

Simple, don’t use smartphone chargers. Use generic usb chargers instead. I use an Ikea 3 in 1 wall plug charger. It’s rated at 2400mA max output per USB port and it’s not a smart charger. This video has made me learn a lot of new stuff.

I've always charged mine with a USB plug specifically an iPhone one(5v 1amp) with varying micro USB cables as they don't all last very long. I recent got 3 1 meter cables off Amazon same day for £4.99 and they are really nice quality, the plug fits well. I do also have a Huawei super charger plug for my phone that uses USB to USB C and that punches out 5v at 2A or 4.5 at 5A or 5v at 4.5A. It really packs a punch, it somtimes gives me a little tingle and I wouldn't use that plug with anything but my phone, people need to realize that it's not about what plug fits job done lol. The controller should only ask for the Power it needs but it's not worth the risk when if the only option is using a over rated plug then just plug it into the ps4 and rest mode it for a few hours

With that 9.0v charger I can see a dead flat controller battery that would go yeah I need the power to charge up and bang the battery might explode because it becomes overcharged during the cycle. Good walk thru mate.

I have the controller to use on my PC, and I always charge it from the USB ports and never my phone plugs. Good to know that it is safe to charge via plug with a few caveats.

I charge my controls over night on theire stands (connected all night) or charge while use for 2 years now and my original control that came with ps4 is still perfect

Note that contrary to what @MMV states early in this otherwise excellent video here are TWO types of USB micro cables, data and charging cables. I have one cable with 5 populated contacts at the micro end (as supplied with my PS4 DS) which works as a charging cable, and one, with 4 populated pins at the micro end (as supplied with my LG phone) which will NOT charge the PS4 DS. Before giving up on charging your PS4 DS do check to be sure you are using a proper cable.

As long as you use 5v(4,7-5,3) there is no problem, chargar can have 100A the controller will draw as much as the dualshock controller bms needs (800 ma- 1A maximum)

Just bought my first console since the Atari 2600, got the ps4pro. luvvin it. For charging i just spent 15 quid on a base-station, two smart DS4 chargers and a 3 USB 2.0 socket hub part of the design.

You need at least 800mA, the controller can only use 800mA. The charger should at least can output 800mA. The one that you should worry is the voltage output of the phone charger or whatever USB charger you are using. Not all charger made the same, some will output 5++ volts when not used and will drop down to close to 5 volts when in use. The culprit of battery destruction is the voltage, not the amperage.

I find the best external phone chargers for the PS4 pads are the older Sony smartphone chargers, most are 5v 850ma. I have a few of these and they work very well with PS3/PS4 contollers.

Here’s what i’m getting at If a power adapter’s output or SEC isn’t at 5 V, or is but has a second “pair” like the one at 8:27 , you’ll pretty much burn out the controller If you want to use an adapter that works without any risk, make sure the output is at 5 V. If the adapter has something like 2 A, being over 800 mA (correct me if i’m wrong with that part), it’ll work just fine However, if you have an adapter that has lower than 800 mA, it’ll work but it will take longer to charge the controller This is how i’m seeing it in a much simpler way (if it doesn’t make sense i’m sorry this is the best way i could explain it) If i’m wrong on anything it would be much appreciated if i got corrected on what i got wrong

I tried using my Apple charging brick, but it was 5V and 1A, so in essence it was over powered and not charging my controller. What I ended up doing was charging it by plugging it into my MacBook pros USB port, and it worked fine. If it weren’t for this video, I wouldn’t have thought to check for the power specs, so this video helped quite a bit, thank you! 😀

My lil sis dropped my ps4 slim from 5 feets and it landed backwards it did get a lil deep scratch but it didn't get damage it happened because she was charging the controller from the ps4 and she pulled the controller and the ps4 fell down

the controller when is being used is not eating 800mA, it's using less than 200mA. So when you are using a 550mAh charger, and the cable is perfect it is still charging the battery, but at a lower rate. Usually the cable is not perfect, so the probability is that it's only charging about 50~100mAh over the consumption.

fantastic information subscribed never knew different chargers could be hazardous to ps4 controller what happened to me is I charged my ps4 controller over night and left on top of ps4 shiny side in the morning the heat burned a small hole through console so never leave controllers charged on ps4 console

03:31 800mAh is the *capacity,* not the charge rate. But they are related to each other. The PS4 controller charges at about 0.4 amps (400mA). It charges up fully in about 2 hours. So the math is nice and simple: 400mA per hour for 2 hours = 800 which is the total capacity. Charging rate varies. It goes fast at first and slows down significantly near the end. So the total time it takes to charge things isn't strict. That's just how batteries work. An example I heard was to imagine trying to stuff as many people as you can into a car. At first it's easy. But after 5 or so you CAN squeeze in more, like maybe 10, but it gets much harder. There's a lot less room to work with and you have to cram them into every last bit of space you can find. I've tested a dozen 5v chargers with various cables and none went higher than 0.4 amps. Even my "Adaptive fast charger" for my phone, which has the same rating as yours (5/9v). But that's probably because it has adaptive right on the label. If anyone wants to test this for themselves you can buy a USB voltage/amp meter for a mere 2-4 dollars on eBay.

If you have an Apple charger. You can use the Apple cube and use whatever android charger you’ll need to charge your ps4 controller. I searched it up and the iPhone charger cube is 5 Volts and 1,000 amps. So it is compatible with the ls4 controller.
