How to Check and Adjust Transmission Fluid Level on 06’- 10’ Ford Explorer

The Automatic Transmissions used in 4th Generation Explorers do not have Dipsticks! However the ATF can still be checked and adjusted using the method I explain in this video. The procedure is the same for both 4.0L and 4.6L models.

Great description on how this works. The hose and clamp came off of the transmission cooler under the radiator and leaked all over the driveway so I knew I shouldn't drive it to the service center. This video helped me add what I needed to be safe thanks.

I have the 2007 Eddie Bauer, my trans pan does not have the plug. What now ? Do I have to drill and tap the pan myself! I wanted to drop my pan and replace the filter and gasket but I cannot figure out how to add or check the fluid ?

Thanks much, Hunter. Very helpful. Can I suggest--not tryin' to be a pain in the ass on this--but maybe you could edit out all the quick movements of the camera. Maybe I'm just lame that way, but I actually started gettin' light-headed, like motion sickness, as i followed along. Other than that, though, really good, clear stuff. Thanks.

Thanks for the video man. I got a 2007 with the 4.0 and same thing happened to mine. Somehow a transmission coolant line was cut and it was shifting hard into 2-3 and 3-4 and wrench light came on. Codes came up p0791 intermediate speed sensor. Changed that still shifting a little hard into those 2 gears. Pumping some fluid in it as we speak to see if this helps it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

You can only check correct level when engine is in running condition and transmission oil temp is achieved around 40degc and above. Good video though.

It came of off a oil sample test kit from Wayne cat. Most time it was easier to clip what you need off and save the rest thats clean. I used it on boost lines to boost gauge before also. Wanna say it’s a 1/4 inch

In hard times I’ve dropped the trans pan and changed the filter, it got me through a few months. You’ll take a good bit of the ATF out when you do that, but you can top it off with new ATF. Otherwise you might need a transmission. I haven’t heard nothing bad about ATS.

Put ur seatbelt on! Lol I have a 2006 explorer and ai gotta say this is a piss-poor design, almost like someone at Ford said “hey the explorer design is all set, lets make some fuckin SUVs!”….then “OH SHIT! I FORGOT SOMETHIN, I JUST KNOW IT…..but what?”
