Thank you for the demonstration on hysteresis. I was having a bit of trouble wrapping my head around how to calibrate that. Awesome work, as usual!

So, fair warning - since I posted this video. I got feedback from many people that hysteresis adjustment has "weird" results. I don't fully understand it, but it appears that some scales have hysteresis that behave like basic backlash (mine does this). Then there are some that just have an area where the reading can flip either way, possibly during analog to digital conversion. One person ran into a scale where one day the scale was showing almost 10 um of "backlash", but the next day, in the same spot it didn't have any. Possibly a mechanical/temperature issue?

@@TouchDRO With my igaging absolute plus scales I have found the mounting is extremely finicky and important. Counterintuitively, my issue was over constrained mounting. The alignment has to be just perfect otherwise the hysteresis is poor and inconsistent. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PERSON TEST THEIR SCALES UNMOUNTED, mine had zero in the free state. As soon as I mounted it, it would have it. My X axis was always good, but my Y axis took alot of iterations to get aligned and I still have around .0004 to .0012, which is very good considering what it was previously. Again, this scale had no hysteresis in the free state.

Good timing for this. It's been about a month since completing the install on my lathe using 5 micron Ditron magnetic on the cross slide and 5 micron optical on the Zed. After Cal, I was having similar error on the magnetic scale, and the optical was dead on. Kind of a bummer about the magnetic scale, but since any parts I make aren't for space travel, I can live with it.

Nice. I did not know about hysteresis. Tomorrow I i will recheck, especially the z where I have two scales summed; the head which is a glass scale and the quill to which I incorporated a magnetic scale.

I am not getting any data from the scales, the Bluetooth connects... This is the message I get when I connect to the bluetooth module from TouchDRO, any help welcome please!

Hi, TouchDRO v3.24.05 build 2024-05-01, Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact (G8441), "view toggle button" rotates screen, but alwats in "Graphical View Display". Thanks!

Thank you for making these videos! I recently installed my TouchDRO setup on my lathe. The next thing I'm going to do is recalibrate it using what I learned from this video. It's really close now but I feel it's a little off. I'm thinking about replacing the DRO on my mill, which has optical scales, but I would like to replace the quill scale with an iGuaging scale. Is there any way to mix them?

Not easily. The "iGaging" board can read optical scales, but needs extra components to work with 5V scales. That said, I wouldn't bother with iGaging scales. Even cheap Chinese magnetic scales will work much better (even though they are nowhere near as accurate as optical scales). Mounting a magnetic scale is more involved, but you will be much happier in the long run. I'm adding a DRO to my new mill, and that will be in the next video in a couple of weeks. I will probably use a EMS/Electronica miniature magnetic scale for the quill.

Pretty much the same way. The calibration process will default to metric units if you set the default units to metric in the app settings. Under the hood the app uses microns (fractional) as the base unit, so there is no rounding error either way.

you can toggle each axis between mm and inches. so even though I am metric, I can switch to inches just for calibration with a 123 block.
