00:00 Introduction
"I only drink champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes, I drink it whenI'm alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and I drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it unless I'm thirsty." In short, you can always drink it if you feel like it.
00:46 So what temperature should you serve champagne at?
Short answer, not too chilled but cool. More specifically, most champagnes are good at 46 degrees Fahrenheit or about 8 degrees Celsius.
For vintage champagnes, it changes a bit to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit or about 10 degrees Celsius.
If your champagne is too cold or too warm, you miss out on some flavors. To get that temperature, it should be about 3-4 hours in the fridge or about 15-20 minutes into an ice bucket. If you do not have that much time, you can add salt to the ice bucket and it will cool down into just about 5 minutes.
01:19 So how do you open a bottle of champagne? There are 2 options.
The traditional one is to do the sabrage. Personally, I've done it once, it is a huge mess and it is more of a show.
A better way to open a champagne is to take the bottle and remove the foil as well as the wire cage and the muzzle on top. Most of the time, there is a little lip where you can open the foil, if you can't, simply take a wine opener and cut it open. Hold the bottle in your right hand if you are right-handed, the left one if you are left-handed. The cork always on the opposite hand. Now, twist the bottle from the bottom and slightly tilt on the cork until it pops.
02:02 So how should you pour champagne? What glass should you use?
Back in the day, people favored a flat kind of copita style glass because champagne often had a lot of carbonation and sometimes they would even use a swizzle stick to get rid of all the bubbles. That way, everything in the champagne is quite controlled so you don't have any excess bubbles and you can use different glasses.
The most popular style is probably the champagne flute which is very elegant and stylish. That being said, in recent years, regular wine glasses have become a lot more popular especially for vintage champagnes because supposedly, they help you to discern flavors better.
At the end of the day, simply go with the glass you have or the one you like most. When you pour champagne, most people hold it by the neck or in the middle. The most elegant way is to put your thumb to the back hole of the bottom of the bottle and then pour it. Ideally, you hold the glass at an angle and slowly pour it down then you wait a little bit until the foam has subsided and then you top it off. you always want the glass to be about half full if its a flute, a little less if it's a wine glass.
Of course, if you get a magnum bottle which is one and a half liters, you get twice as many glasses.
03:36 How To Drink Champagne?
1. Look at the champagne
If it is a very light golden color, it means it is a younger champagne. If it is darker, more golden, or yellow, it means it's an older, more ripen champagne.
2. Smell the champagne
Hold your nose over it and see what you can smell. Generally, there are five aroma groups. Flowers, vegetables, fruits, dried fruits, indulgent delicacies.
3. Taste the champagne
Take a little sip, let it roll down your tongue, down the palate. Wine tasters typically swirl the champagne around their mouth just like you do with a mouthwash, that way, you get the full flavor experience.
Last but not the least, pay attention to the finish when it rolls down your palate. The longer the flavor lingers in your mouth, the more high end, the more expensive the champagne will be.

The funniest part is when Sven says how "the most elegant way is to put your thumb into the back hole" (of the bottle). Although putting your thumb in the back hole conjures some inelegant imagery, you may want to use the correct term for this, which is in fact the punt. Along the same vein, it is important when describing placing your thumb in the punt, to enunciate well to avoid any misunderstandings.

In regards to a noticable "pop" when opening a sparkling wine, the person who taught me on wine (one of the most highly ranked sommeliers if my country) said that popping the wine is tacky/showy and that it's better to learn how to "silently" open the bottle. Oh, and I've also tried the saber opening and completely agree that it's very messy and best left for extremely special occasions.

Hello!!! I just have to say that I absolutely adore your channel! And your personality and knowledge and many, many other qualities, I have learnt sooooo much from you and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing! I'm a lady, but I watch your videos because I have a 7yo boy and a lovely husband that is all about ASOS fashion (I'm not demeaning anyone who uses the brand, I do too, but elegant and classy are not the first words that come to my mine when someone says ASOS) and my son gets the same look! As we go twice a week to church meetings and go out preaching, is very important for me to learn to have a good taste on clothes, we're from overseas and fashion is quite different from where we're from, and what I like the most about you is that you're not the model type who would look good on anything, but you're like the rest of mortals who are not models but can be elegant! Is like breaking a barrier, when I feel worthy of being elegant and classy even if I'm not the model type, if that makes sense :S well that's how you make me feel and just wanted to thank you for that!

I smiled to myself as I wondered if you would address the sabrage, and then you did! As I understand it, it is important to use the back of the blade rather than the edge. This would suggest a sabre with a flat spine like a French model 1822 or the American model 1840 "wristbreaker." A gentleman would reject the 1860 model for sabrage because it has a rounded spine. It does seem like a messy process, but, also fun. It might be best to practice first on empties, move up to the cheap stuff and then be done with it. As always, safety first!

Addition: Make sure to arrive at the table with flutes already set, bottle in hand along with a clean white BAR MOP (towel). You may think that the champagne won't spill, but it happens to the pros. Wrap the folded towel around the bottle as you hold it, whilst pulling the cork in the opposite hand. If when pouring, it's too heavy for you to punt with one hand (don't be ashamed and risk a disaster!) use the other to support the neck that is still wrapped with the towel. When you are done with all the pouring, place the opened bottle in an ice bucket (on table or stand) and drape the towel along the bottle. Don't take the towel away and don't throw it on the table! I have been served champagne where the server insisted she didn't need a towel. 1. She struggled to open it, then had to go get a towel while my wife and I stood looking at the de-foiled bottle at our table. 2. She then spilled a bit when pouring and had to wipe it up (w/ the towel she didn't need). Think of the towel as elegant insurance.

Raphael; I have watched your video most carefully. There is just one thing about opening the champagne. In my book, there are two ways (in addition to the sabre); like you've demonstrated, when you are with a lady (we wouldn't want her to lose an eye), or with company in a non-celebratory context. But when you are celebrating, the cork should definitely pop and fly out. The pop should resonate loud, and if the cork should hit something, then the damage will be there to always remind you of that joyous occasion. A somelier once told my dad "you should NEVER let the cork fly out; because that affects the taste of the champagne". To which my father replied; "you understand nothing."

you’re mostly right..i would consider slightly higher temperature to drink champagne..the reason is that we use less and less dosage ( sugar) in champagne..to balance the acidity of the wine ( champagne) you need higher temperature than before ( average dosage is aroung 7 gr/ liter it used to be more around 12 in years past)..the ihigher the dosage the chiller the wine…( think coca cola..exactly the same problem..balancing sugar and acidity)
