In this video, we'll check out Tamiya's classic 3.7cm Pak 36 kit & do a little chipping tutorial! If you're looking to improve your scale model chipping & weathering techniques - or if you're just looking for a little small-scale anti-tank action, you're in the right place!
The Pak 36, originally developed in 1934 by Rheinmetall, was the primary weapon of Wehrmacht Panzerjager units until it was phased out by the larger Pak 40 in 1942. The weapon saw service in nearly every theater of operation & still be found all around the world as a staple artifact in the collection of many WWII museums.
Jokingly referred to as the "Heeresanklopfgerät," or "Army Door Knocking Device" by its crews, this plucky little artillery piece served through to the final days of WWII despite it's relative obsolescence in the face of bigger & more heavily-armored allied tanks.
You can pick yourself up a copy of this old school Tamiya kit here: amzn.to/31U322g

As usual, a very nicely edited video that provides a lot of content. Just finished my 2nd watching and took notes this time! I appreciate you combining the chipping with weathering, as it was confusing for me to understand the steps. I've got it now and am going to try it out on my current build (tamiya m8 howitzer). Thank you!

Also consider what primer would have been used at the factory before application of the dunkelgelb - adds more time, but a layer of that over the aluminum and before the dunkelgelb would add even more. But that might be better suited to manually putting in chips (a la Night Shift)

Nice vid. The few times I've tried hairspray chipping I haven't had much luck, But I'll try again following your steps. FYI, Vallejo makes a basic Model Color called Black-Gray that looks great on tires that have been in the field for a while. Tamiya also makes a Rubber Black that looks great for newer tires. JMHO but straight black tires just don't quite look right.

Looks great! I might be wrong, but I think the dunkelgelb would have been sprayed over the dunkelgrau irl, because it's a later war color. I would also try ammo wash for dark yellow, I think it looks a lot less stark and a lot more natural over that camouflage.
@SpruesNBrews
@SpruesNBrews 2 жыл бұрын
You're correct! I was kind of figuring out what I wanted to do as I went along here, but you're right that the grau would have been the original base. And thanks for the tip on the ammo wash! 👍

Thanks for the tutorial Hank! New to your content and new to airbrushing as well! Can I ask what ratio of thinner you typically run when spraying the acrylics you show in the video? I'm trying to get my pressures and ratios right... seems I've dove deep into a rabbit hole haha.

Sure thing - thanks for watching! I usually airbrush AMMO Mig paints that are specifically mixed for airbrushing, so you can spray them right out of the bottle. I also generally am spraying at 22psi 👍

Great tutorial on chipping, but I was wondering after your chipping of the dark yellow layer, do you need to add another hairspray layer before you add the green camo? Also is it do you need to protect bottom base layers like the aluminum before you add the hairspray layer?
@SpruesNBrews
@SpruesNBrews Жыл бұрын
Thanks! So essentially once you're done with a particular layer - if you're happy with the current chipping effect - you need to add a protective varnish & then another hairspray coat (if you want to continue with subsequent chips). Otherwise, if you were to spray the green over your yellow chips without a protective coat, any subsequent chips would just take off even more of the yellow (as well as the green). I hope that makes sense!

So maybe this is a dumb question… what’s the advantage of decanting the hairspray into the airbrush versus just misting it out of the can? Love your channel by the way.
@SpruesNBrews
@SpruesNBrews Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! And good question - spraying out of the airbrush provides a lot more control & a more consistent stream of hairspray than through the built-in nozzle. I've tried going straight from the can, but it gets a little lumpy 👍

WARNING to anyone new like my self you NEED to the the layers dry before chipping I made this really nice Sherman only for it to get ruined with the water and the paint I didn’t find out till later that you NEED to let every layer dry or a long time around 1-2 hours in in a rush but best to leave over night
