Thanks Grace for the info. This has been on my mind quite some time (the speed bump). I like one but it doesn’t encompass both my sheep and chickens. So still working on it.

I've chosen two names Dunn Nursery which uses my last name and coincidentally the crossroad of my location. My other LLC which will start chickens and pigs this spring is Tranquil State Farm. I wish I would have put a comma between State and Farm. Tranquil State Farm sounds soo much like a bank but neither my wife or I are very creative and this was our best.

For a serious farm-as-business approach people should consider seeking counsel from a trademark attorney and getting research done in their jurisdiction. Family names, geographical locations and generic descriptors don't make good trademarks. Your goal is to be distinctive and unlikely to confuse with an existing producer of your goods and/or services. People are used to seeing stylized letters or logos of successful companies that break these 'rules' to get registrations but take most of their examples from famous brands (FORD, etc.) and don't realize that they've reduced the value of their brand with a poor initial choice. Without an advertising budget to help your weak brand acquire distinctiveness through use you're better off starting with a strong trademark. (2 cents from a retired Intellectual Property paralegal)

The property we live on and will start our farm on in a couple months with twenty sheep is a former 9 hole golf course. How it was ever successful with as hilly and bumpy as it is, idk, but we are going to change the name just a bit by removing ‘golf course’ from the end and replace it with either ‘sheep farm’ or just ‘farm’.

My brand name is Ricky's You can find me on face book and we just started a web sight. I have a lot of argument with people because I do not call my self a farm although we are, I do not call my self a commercial processor although we do a lot of processing. I do not call my self an instructor although we host many classes. When I started all of this 4 years ago I took the stance that if you label me you negate me. I follow know ones rules. I belive in ethics not rules. I belive in following know ones path, I make my own and leave a wide trail. And it worked.
