For most newcomers I recommend TKL (tenkeyless) aka "80%" keyboards. Average PC user is stepping down from a 104-key. This drops the numpad but keeps navigation cluster...still a very popular feature to most people, but one they realize they do use (enough to miss it) once gone. Also, if you want to use mouse less, you have an even greater need for nav-cluster, imo. Not all mechanical KBs are tactile. Only those with tactile switches, browns being most popular of this type, offer the bump at point of actuation. Blue switches are known as the most popular of the "clicky" category and then there are "Linear" switches, Red the most commonly offered. Also, there are amazing options outside to Cherry MX switches. This is the key purpose in the world of mechanical KBs: options. Every component can be modded or switched out to suit your needs. The only limits lie in your mechanical KB knowledge and learned skills. I'm sure most programmers can appreciate this.

Nice video as usual! To add a point at 9:28, it is said that mechanical keyboards tends to add less tension to the carpal tunnel since you generally do not fully press the key down. @@JoeNguyen9x Just like with touch-typing on a keyboard, the numpad has a "home row". Some even have a "bump" on the number 5 key to orient your hand on the numpad. I think you put your 2nd finger on that and you should be able to reach all the numbers with 3 fingers. Your little finger is for the Enter key (and + and -).

Interesting. I actually own a data center and I don't know anyone that doesn't use tactile or clicky keys. _Gaming that's a different rabbit hole._ Personally, I think it's nuts when people are complaining about the keyboard sounds on KZfaq. Literally IMO stupidity. Never heard one person complain about somebody's clicky keyboard sounds at the office and I employ over a hundred people. My wife has a relatively inexpensive Corsair aluminum full size keyboard with Cherry MX Blues and types over 200 WPM, I digress to her example. If you're switching between Apple and Windows, then 100% I would recommend Keycron; it comes with keycaps for Windows and Apple. I also would recommend either a full size keyboard or an 1800 .. maybe a TKL. I'm dealing with numbers often, got to have a numpad. Also 60% or 65% keyboards are utterly useless even for gamers. Today, I would probably recommend the Keycron Q5 ETA 2 weeks with either real Cherry MX Blues or Browns. If you want to go down some rabbit hole of switches, go for it.

had a ton of keyboards by now. currently ducky miya pro with cherry mx silent reds. typing-wise it's the nicest i had so far. i like the looks. the silent switches are good for not bothering other people at night if you don't live alone. but the huge downside that nags me: not a 100% keyboard. so the same as the ducky one in the video. it really really is annoying to have to press the function key to use the f-keys or to take a screenshot or something else. honestly you don't need a super special keyboard for programming, i had those because of gaming. but if you don't actually want that i would definitely look for a 80-100% because you really need those keys oftenly like for debugging or taking a screen or doing some shortcuts or whatever. just my personal 2 cents. (while a good keyboard is fun tho of course. typing just feels a lot better. but not nessercary). if my current keyboard breaks i'll probably get something similar just 80-100%. they are very rare with german key-layout but they exist. varmillo has just launched similar ones i think. but they are really really really pricey D:

With Autohotkey, Karabiner or TouchCursor you can easily put arrow keys right under the ESDF or IJKL cluster where they belong. Right under your home row fingertips, and use the SpaceFN spacebar as a function key idea. It's brilliant. I'll never use a dedicated arrow cluster again. I'm even thinking about moving to a 40% keyboard now that I have figured out how to move keys to me instead of moving to the keys.

Jump into custom mechanical keyboards and you will notice how bad those in store keyboards are. About programming, I like when I am focused on the code and not on typing itself. By that I mean switches not being loud, good touch typing and feel. Razer and keyboards like those doesn't belong in those categories. Also, mechanical keyboards doesn't mean it is loud. That depends on switches themself. For example, I am using silent tacticle switches (Zilent v2). Also the size (layout) of the keyboard is also important. For coding you don't want to move your hands too much. I personally like 65% cause I don't have to move hands too much and coding by itself becomes easier. And finally, searching for a perfect keyboard for yourslef is much much more diffucult than anyone could imagine.

9:45 noise is not the difference between the two. Mechanial can be loud or quite, depending on the switch, while membrane keyboards have totally different mechanism and its just rubber and button. Mechanicals are way better in any case, but they are a bit more costly, but if you can, go with it.

I agree with the person that recommended to build your own board. These days you don’t even have to solder you have hotswap keyboards were you can simply klik the switches in to the sockets go with khail sockets btw. And if a keyboard doesn’t have qmk or via skip it otherwise just by a pre made board from Leopold. Btw I switched all my boards to 65% that’s a 60% with arrow cluster and all my boards are programmable don’t worry it’s not like coding not difficult at all there all tools and web clients that help just google it. My keyboards are all 100% mac,Windows and Linux compatible everything works volume control brightness I can make any key do what I want and have multiple levels where keys do different things and the software is OpenSource so you don’t need to be concerned with it going away

The one thing I don't understand is why the ducky 1 2 sf you are using looks slightly different then the ones being sold on the ducky one 2 site and on amazon. The difference is that the enter key is bigger for you, whereas the ones being sold have a smaller enter key. Why is this? Did they come out with a different version that has the smaller enter key?

You can get a tkl keyboard if you don’t have much space an if you want the arrow keys or maybe you can get a 65% keyboard

You should try a US/ANSI keyboard layout, way better for programming. {} [] ; etc are way easier to type, on mac you can still get scandinavian keys (øæå) from option+(A/O/ ' ).

Hi. You did not cover the most important aspect. I would recommend using an US keyboard layout, as most programming languages are designed on those keyboards. On other layouts, characters like $, slashes, ~, brackets, etc. are accessed via Shift or even Alt key. So more key presses required. On my italian keyboard I always have to press Alt+1 2 6 for typing the ~ character. Cheers

Just bought the HyperX Alloy FPS Pro with Cherry MD Reds and coming from a cheapo membrane keyboard, it was pretty unimpressive to me in terms of typing experience. The standard profile makes mistype easier for me along with the easy actuation force. Perhaps MX Keys would have been better. Only if Logitech releases a TKL/65% version of the keyboard, that would be PERFECT

Question for other people who code and type a lot. Do any of you not like to move your keyboard? Whenever I move it it always throws me off, I ended up just putting tape on my table to mark where it goes, and if someone moves it I freak out, also btw my feet don’t touch the ground so I thin, that it the problem. Thx in advance

I've had the corsair k70 with browns. The keyboard is kinda loud and my mic pics up it quite well... But with closed headphones it's really good.

If there are cherry mx brown keyswitches, you know its probably a good keyboard. I also have cherry mx red, they are ok, but they dont give me the same feedback and hands feels a little bit more tired after a while i think.

No ten keyless keyboards (not the same as 65%)? When I code, I use home and end a lot to go to the beginning of a line and end of line.
