How to CHOOSE COLOURS for a watercolour painting

Knowing which colours to choose for specific subjects, paintings and ideas that you have can be tricky.
Firstly there are so many colours out there to choose from. We often have a large amount of colours in our box to choose from, and you might think that simply squidging a little bit of each watercolour out is a good idea.
Why not have access to as much of the colour wheel as possible?
Actually having lots of colours on your palette can make colour mixing much harder, simply because you have more choices! And with that comes more likelihood of not getting the colour you want and/or creating muddy or sludgy colours in pursuit of the colours you want.
So limiting the amount of the colours on your palette is a great way to bypass this, but more than this, choosing a limited and concise colour palette often makes for much better paintings. Colour harmonies and strong colour designs are born naturally out of the your so colour choices before you even start painting.
So, how do we choose the right colours for particular subjects?The key is in understanding that each primary, secondary, or even tertiary section of the colour wheel can have various colours within it. Each one of these having their own cool or warm bias.It is this cool or warm bias that significantly influences the colours that you can achieve with each colour. And then when combined with other colour choices, this further accentuates, or limits this accessible colour range.
For example a warm Blue (therefore all ready purple bias) mixed with a Cool Red (also then having a purple bias) will give us a much brighter and cleaner purple than using a cool Blue and a Warm. Neither of which are "interested" in turning purple!
So with a fairly basic understanding or your watercolour pigments, the colour wheel and how this effects you colour mixes you will be much better equipped to easily choose the right colours for your particular individual paintings.

As a beginner, who was in total control of my watercolor application, your tutorials are giving me a HUGE push to use water colour as they are best used! Most other artists, while they are amazing are so much about control and that can get quite labour intensive and too detailed, which can overlook the magic that water and pigment can do, once we have planned the process by studying lights, shades and the large and small shapes... Thank you for pushing me to change my mind and allow for the process to lead to the results...its not easy but its giving me SO much growth...

Thanks Tom for confusing me further. Just kidding. This is one of if not the best explanations of color theory I have ever seen. It took me months of intense study to gain all that you put in one vid. Grahme Boothe got me started on the road of a split primary pallete and all that can be done with just a handful of colors and a lot of knowledge. Its worth it. Those sho nuff are some beeyoutifull paintins! Thanks for an incredibly useful vid. This will be so helpful to many people who are still confused. I'm going to recommend it whenever the subject comes up.

So pleased it helped! Yeah, greens can be tricky...if you can pick a cool and warm of both blue and yellow and then play around with different combos, you will soon get a feel for different possibilities. I would also play around with varying amounts of yellow and blue and then how water amount affects too...and it maybe obvious, but I will say anyway. It can often be easier to start with the much weaker yellow and slowly add little touches of the blue.

I think there is even a difference in which brand..fir instance ..if painting denim of coveralls or jeans i choose schmincke..if painting brocade i choose mission gold ....if i am dropping in color and hoping for a cauliflower effect i dont use Qor..it travels to far unless paper is barely damp..if to wet there is a swoosh rather than a cauliflower effect.

This was so helpful, thank you! 🙏 I feel like I’m starting to get a handle on the split primary palette and colour mixing. My biggest problem now is choosing colours that go nicely together from a harmony point of view.
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 2 жыл бұрын
So pleased it helped! Choosing colours within this idea is the next step...with only one of each primary you can naturally achieve some sort fo colour harmony... the easiest way I find is to pick what you want the dominant colour or section of the colour to be and how vibrant you want it. For example if you want a vibrant and strong green section then using the cool yellow like aureolin and cool blue like Pthalo will give you this, plus they are both really strong, clean and vibrant colours in their own right, so the yellow green and cool blue section of the colour wheel will really dominate...then if you wanted your accent colour to be a stronger orange you could go with a warm red. The red would give very very muted purples - therefore you have kind fo create d naturally harmonising colour palette where the whole purple side of the wheel is very muted and allows the greens to really sing out with some reasonable strong orange is you want them.. You would never get a really bright purple because of the Pthalo, but swap the red to something like Alizarin or Quinacridone and you could get brighter purples than with the warm red, and your oranges would be more muted too... I highly recommend painting some colour wheels of primaries and secondaries using just one of each primary, create lots of variations and you will soon see what sort fo colours you can create with different combinations and this exercise will then give you a feel for colour harmonies within a piece :) Really useful stuff, but at the same time, don't get too bogged down in theory and over think it :)

@@tomshepherdartist That makes a lot of sense, and great advice to practice with the colour wheels. Great tutorial. How do you decide whether the background/accent color is warm or cool? Simply intuition?
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist Жыл бұрын
Great question. Kind of intuition and just going with what I’m feeling...but also a few considerations like in this case I wanted something to offset the very warm orangey lion, but not too bright in colour...so a deep neautral blue. Over times I might want a more harmonious feeling so I’d do a warmer background with similar colours If in doubt i ur inside of more subdued colours and you can go too wrong, will just give different feelings :)

Wow, lots of info here. Thanks for providing a very clear framework for thinking about colors. For me all the words made sense, but integrating it into a plan for a painting is my next challenge. I have been working with a limited color palette, but the same palette for everything. Obviously sometimes this works, other times not. In addition to values sketches, I guess i should be thinking more about color goals too. When you painted your puffins, did you start with thinking “I want a warm vibrant orange for the beak” and then go from there or was that something that you realized later after working on the rest of the birds?
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marilyn, thank you for the comment! So glad it was helpful. Sounds like you are well on the right track and thinking about things the right way. So with the puffins you are right that the start point was wanting a warm bright orange for the beak, that was start point. The secondary consideration was wanting a vibrant greeney yellow and a bright cool pink for the loose setting....the colours of the black and white areas were incidental and born out of the previous choices, then the turquoise was an addition later on in the painting when I feel it need a little something extra to finish it....so, all though quite broad palette, there was certainly a structure to picking out the colours.
