We picked up the query from early Buddhism Q&A of Albomulle Sumanasara Thero August 27th, 2020 @ Gothami vihara
Q. I knew of Theravada Buddhism by meeting vipassana meditation, and then I started reading the books from Samgha Publishing Company. I have experienced parental abuse in my childhood, so I’m interested in the treatment of inner child since before meeting vipassana meditation. Then, I found a book about meditation from the company, but I don’t know if I should keep reading this since the author is a zen monk from Rinzai sect. I started reading since yesterday, but to be honest, I’m worried because it was so easy to read and understand that I felt meditation was too easy. There are so many sects in Buddhism, but I mean, there are too many ways of meditation to decide to absorb it. It says it’s mindfulness, so I think it’s different from vipassana meditation but, I worry if learning it might affect my vipassana meditation. Also, another book said mindfulness was originally Buddha’s meditation(vipassana meditation). I think Buddha was so great that various sects and meditations appeared. However, I can’t tell which is the safe and genuine meditation because I’m a beginner. Although I feel I might as well avoid such things if I can’t judge, please tell me how to judge whether it’s safe or not if even beginners can do it.
