so yeah last month i saw this video , was confused about buying a tripod . and yes i commented about price and how i cant afford the one i want is more than twice what i was willing to spend at most , i was about to pull the trigger on a cheaper one which i wanted to get because i have some trips panned , i kept looking and i just got a leofoto LS-285C was looking at the sirui 7c but chose the leofoto at around 30% more than what i was thinking about but damn it was a great choice , i havent tested it in a trip or on the ground situation , but it was the perfect one for me , basically i asked all the questions and got pretty much all my answers , it needs to be atleast 5ft without the center column and needs to have a detachable center column that takes to 6ft and should go under 10inches , anything that can carry over 5KGs and weight around 1.5KGs would be the best suited one and yes Carbon Fiber was always preferable i didnt really cared about the number of sections to start with cause i dont know enough... but To sum it up , EIther you buy good , or buy twice. Thanks for making the video , It really really helped me to get the most out of my money

I'm so glad I could help you with your decision! Buying a tripod is far more complex than people think. There's much to consider, and no one wants to make the wrong choice. Enjoy and Take car

@@ScottymanPhoto yup absolutely tripods are generally considered one of the more long term purchases to start with and man your video is probably the most comprehensive guide for tripods imo

Such a great idea for a video. And I've definitely bought twice, haha. The key things I recommend are carbon legs to save weight (price is fairly reasonable now for some brands), no center column for added stability, and a good ballhead. I love the RRS ones with the quick release lever. Nothing worse than dropping a camera because of poor attachment or instability. Learned that one the hard way when my R5 tumbled in Joshua Tree. Thankfully nothing happened, but YIKES.

Thanks for watching, Brian! Carbon fiber is worth the added cost for sure! I really like Gitzo and RRS tripods and ball heads. Their quality is hard to beat!

Good points. I have an older Bogen (Manfrotto) 3211 aluminum tripod with a three-axis 804RC2 head on it. I bought it (and a fluid video head) for use with 10x70 binoculars ~30 years ago. I quickly learned a photo head is no good for astronomical use, but it made for a stable camera tripod. The main drawback is the legs won't spread wide. But at 31" collapsed and 8+ pounds, it quickly becomes a beast carried around. For walking (...I hesitate to elevate what I do to "hiking" LOL) I got an Oben AT-3586 aluminum tripod with a ball head on it. It's definitely a compromise (eyes wide open) but it folds up to barely half the length of the Manfrotto and is about half the weight. So far, it's been good with my relatively lightweight camera and lenses. At any rate, at $150 it won't be too painful to replace if need be.

@@ScottymanPhoto Yeah, sorry I haven’t watched and commented much lately. I’ve had NO time. But things are finally starting to settle into a rhythm, and I’ve managed to get out this past week and take some photos again. Boy it felt good! And now I’m working on my first video in 2 months. Geez, time flies…

One of the most versatile lightweight tripods is the Peak Design Carbon Travel Tripod. It handles my R5 with the 100-500 easily.

Peak Design makes some great products. I have a couple of their bags and love them! I'll have to take a closer look at their travel tripod.

@@ScottymanPhoto It’s super compact, feels a little flimsy when you first extend the legs, but rock solid once you lock them. Providing it’s not windy, it’ll handle just about anything you throw at it.

@@peterfritzphoto yeah, I looked it up earlier. I saw a comparison between it and the Gitzo I have. Interesting indeed!

but where does budget fit into all of these ? i got something that i like but its like more than twice what i can afford right now . maybe if i save a bit till next year ( already have 3 trips planned and do want to have one with me to shoot panos , long exposures and some astro ) should just not buy the cheap one now ahd buy the expensive one later ? which means that i will be missing out on the next 3 trips

Those are excellent points that often plague many people. A quality tripod is a noteworthy investment. The point I'm trying to make is specifically aimed at those who buy several tripods along the way and eventually end up trading everything in for a top-of-the-line model. In your case, the trips would take priority. Given your current situation, if I didn't own a tripod, I would buy a cheaper one and prioritize those trips. Indeed, in almost any situation I can imagine, I would opt for a trip of gear any day. When reviewing images I've captured over the years, I can't tell which tripod I used, but the pictures I made and the associated memories are what's most important. That being said, I would continue saving to buy that "awesome" tripod I have in mind. Also, for those on a tight budget, consider a used model. Thanks for the fabulous comment, and thank you for watching!
