I've been shooting for 40 years, started with film, went to digital and now back to film. Film is just so much better than digital. If you don't understand that rethink your perception of photography and art.

I think both digital and film are both great ways to capture one’s artistic expression. Unfortunately, it seems that some of today’s digital photographers, have a tendency to dismiss film as a lost art. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Film will always have its place in the arts. Truly, there is something very luring about film, and I don’t see that changing in the future. Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts.

Yeah, I think I used the Nikon eyepiece B&H part number #NIEPFM2 with the Nikon DK-19 eyecup B&H part number #NIDK19. Just stretch the eyecup over the eyepiece. You will not need the metal retaining ring that comes with it. Let me know if you have any issues. Thanks for watching!

Recently purchased a beautiful Nikon FM2n to try shooting film for the first time in almost 50 years. You are so correct, no need to choose one over the other. I can see I'll shoot digital most of the time but for me, there are just subjects that just call out for film, like that pump house you found and the environment around it. Very much looking forward to re-discovering this brand new, old technology. Thanks for the videos!

Recently, I have been using the Benro Polaris for landscape and astrophotography, mounted on my Gitzo SAFARI tripod with my Sony G 20mmF1.8 and GM 50mm F1.2. @@ScottymanPhoto awesome . I’ve been researching tripods (and massively disappointed with the lack of innovation in the space ). I believe many of the shortcomings with tripods have actually been solved by structural engineering concepts dating back to the 1840s - just not incorporated. I also discovered another ghetto solution to avoiding tripod wobble : (wait for it) : camping stools (the 3 legged saddle things for fishers ). You instantly lower the center of gravity and solve the issue of needing a camera at eye-level. Also - did you find the gyro device more accurate than using your phone’s accelerometer (accessible via the web api btw - so no need to dick around with Swift and Xcode certificates ). Oh god I’m oversharing again . Peace !

You hit the nail on the head. My family members all use phone cameras. They want a fast shot and move on. It works for them. I tend to move too slow with my Canon and Nikons. If I am driving and see a potential photograph to be made I will try and pull off the road and take a shot. If walking about I am always lagging behind. The only one who wants to travel with me is my dog and he is having second thoughts. I am traveling to Northern Wyoming, my home state and then to Southern Montana later this month. I have plan my trip and like many landscape photo makers my fingers are crossed. I hope my wife has patience.

As ultra wide lenses strongly emphasize the foreground it should better be interesting. This can often be the case in cityscapes, but rarely in landscapes. Ask yourself: Are these rocks, roots or flowers really so special that they should fill the frame -- or is my real motive the mountain chain in the background?

Those are excellent points that often plague many people. A quality tripod is a noteworthy investment. The point I'm trying to make is specifically aimed at those who buy several tripods along the way and eventually end up trading everything in for a top-of-the-line model. In your case, the trips would take priority. Given your current situation, if I didn't own a tripod, I would buy a cheaper one and prioritize those trips. Indeed, in almost any situation I can imagine, I would opt for a trip of gear any day. When reviewing images I've captured over the years, I can't tell which tripod I used, but the pictures I made and the associated memories are what's most important. That being said, I would continue saving to buy that "awesome" tripod I have in mind. Also, for those on a tight budget, consider a used model. Thanks for the fabulous comment, and thank you for watching!

If people understood that the only setting that actually affects the data is ISO, aperture and shutter then silly videos like this wouldn’t exist. The problem isn’t with digital photography, it’s that people don’t understand how digital photography works. In reality it’s much closer to film than people think. I personally set my ISO to the sensor’s base, put it in manual exposure, and meter with spot. I shoot vintage glass so AF isn’t an option. But if you find yourself distracted by your digital camera, that’s on you - and frankly, probably because you don’t know what you’re doing.

Most people in the comments understand the difference between film and digital. It's important to consider all perspectives. Some people may prefer one over the other. one point about vibration, as you imply at 7:36 that 1deg\sec. is minimal; Yes, perhaps at F8 but what about an aperture of f 2.8 or f 1.4 ? where any motion can get any desired object out of the 'focus box' as the dof is so thin at those apertures.

Though you did mention it once in passing, COST per $hot (even if the shot fails) is always on your mind. Your right, there's no need to cull a lot of pictures. I always felt like I should have shot more. Occasionally, I'd wish I had two bodies. One for color negative, at least one more for slide reversal, black and white, or even high speed color. Can't bracket negative film, unless you do your own processing. You should always bracket slide film, so always buy the 36 exposure rolls. That's difficult/impossible to do with action scenes. I'd suggest people buy a Nikon, that way you can buy a cheap modern manual lens. The most expensive lens from 50 years ago will never be as sharp as a cheap manual F mount lens today. No, I'm not down on film, but I'll never go back!!!

The best aspect ratio depends on the subject, as simple. And often there are several good options. But I fully agree that many people do just use the camera aspect ratio without thinking about the aspect ratio. The same goes for the perspective, which is more important than the focal length. I grew up shooting 35mm on Nikon 40 years ago. I am contemplating 6x9 on large format for landscape so that I can scan it with a mirrorless digital camera to make high rez images. Other than that, I don’t miss film at all. How much simpler can you get than shooting in manual? And you do develop your digital image: Its called shooting RAW. You develop them in lightroom or darktable etc. I prefer filmic workflow in Darktable. I often shoot with fully manual lenses that have scales etc. Nothing to do with film or digital. I could not get the kind of images of birds in flight I get today back then. Canon’s AF and lenses are amazing. And when I want something simple, I put on a TTArtisan 35mm F0.95 fully mechanical lens on my R7 and mess around with scales, aperture on the lens and focus on the lens. Fine for playing…

Yeah, that's for sure. In fact, my wife saw one of my images and asked if I had "Photoshopped" the colors. I tried to explain the difference between RAW and JPG, but I digress. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Brian! Take care, buddy!

Good camera, but expensive! Can't go wrong with a medium format.

Landscape photography has looked identical for 40 years or more. Everyone going into it now tabulates a list of places to go in the shortest timeframe they can. The genre died before I was born

True, it’s a busy business now. Internet, phones, population increases, and technology have all contributed to over saturation. Nevertheless, no two compositions are ever the same, and we do it because it’s a passion. In the end, it’s all about the experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Can you still buy films? Does people still use film cameras? 🤔 Now you have the answer. Digital didn't even kill photography. So it's up to you, yes you, and you alone. Will YOU let ai take over your passion?

Well said! Indeed, it's the passion that matters most. Regardless of how good AI becomes, I'm sure I will always enjoy the art of photography. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Very interesting video. I'm glad I've retired from photography and I know wedding photographers are struggling to make a living. AI is what it is. We cannot stop progress so we might as well embrace it.

True, progress inevitably comes. Regardless, like film, we can still enjoy the process. We have to keep in mind the things that are most important and what attracted us to photography in the first place. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, buddy!
