I used to pick mostly stem plants when I was getting started again. Now I choose slow growing plants. Buce, anubious, crypts (💖), and a variety of mosses. It doesn't take stems long to take over a tank if you don't stay on top of it. I would cut down on the length of time you have your light on for the algae. Good luck!
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
I totally started the opposite way, but i kinda wish I had done it your way. Stem plants grow faster and can give beginners a sense of success early on. The slower growing plants don't show as much change and can be prone to algae growth. Thanks for the advice; you'll be happy to know that I did conquer the algae eventually so keep watching. 😉

Great video but I'm confused, how could the Ammonia levels be anything other than zero if there were no animals in the tank creating waste to turn into Ammonia? Or did I miss something?
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're correct! So, basically to grow beneficial bacteria as your biological filtration, people add ammonia as food. However, to grow plants as biological filtration, you add fertilizers that contain nitrogen compounds (which can usually be detected by nitrate test kits if it's in the water column). According to microbiologist Diana Walstad, plants will consume both ammonium and nitrates (and possibly nitrites too), but they prefer to consume ammonium first. I chose to use fertilizers instead of ammonia to grow the plants because the ferts contain many other nutrients that plants to need grow, Once the plants are growing well off fertilizers, you can add fish (which produce ammonia), and the plants will happily consume it all the same. Here's a link to Diana Walstad's article on plants as biological filtration: dianawalstad.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/biolfiltration2017a.pdf And here's a link on how to do plant cycling using ammonia-rich soils: www.advancedplantedtank.com/filter-tank-cycling.html

recently started my first live planted tank. started with a couple mixed in with the fake plants, and removed fake as i added more live plants. all was well until i got some hornwort that apparently brought ich with it and the ich meds killed most of my fish and some of the plants in 488 hours despite following directions carefully. How can I be more certain my plants in future wont do the same? As I' basically going to have to start over, and even if i scape fully and wait a couple months all over again before adding fish, how can I be sure the plants dont bring in more/continue to harbor fish diseases?
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 4 жыл бұрын
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that! To prevent ich on plants, I read that you could quarantine them in 80°F water with no fish for 2 days or more and that should kill all the ich since they can't find any hosts. Not sure if there are any plant dips that can kill microorganisms without killing the plant...

What's up GW? Water sprite is a cool plant. But I've never had any luck putting it in the substrate. Mine thrives floating, so much so that I have to throw away some of it, (which I agonized over at first). Give us an update on how it goes with it's planting please. And thanks for another cool video! P.S. I saw a tiny baby Axolotl being nursed back to health ay my local Aquarium dealer. I couldn't tell what was in the tank at first because of the angle, and the woman at the counter said, "isn't he cute", and then I saw him and exclaimed, "Aw, he's just a baaaby"! Felt self conscious for a split second, and then thought, " ah so what". But they are so cute when baby's. Good news was that he was doing much better, ate, and on the mend after just floating. Later gator!

How cute that you saw a baby axolotl! You know, I'm glad you mentioned that about the water sprite. It's doing ok and is putting out new leaves, but I've noticed some holes and I'm not sure if it's from a nutrient deficiency or my otocinclus catfish. I'll definitely keep a watch out for it and see if I need to replace that plant.

Water sprite likes sea chem flourish. It is a water column feeder. When I planted my first water sprite, it kept floating up during gravel vacuum time. Cory from Aquarium Co-Op has some bendy lead weights that wrap around the stem, but my water sprite rotted at that point and I tried wrapping it loosely, but no luck there . If you float it, you will get lots of baby's and will have plenty of the plant to experiment with planting in the substrate. I hope that you have luck planting it and can give me advice! But if you want to float it along with your frog bit, it can be a good hiding spot for fry. For me, my danios play hide and seek in it all the time!
