Just ordered the Motu M2 from your site. Was going to go with the Scarlett 2i2 but went with the M2 for the loopback feature. I’ll hoping this will help bring sound into my zoom & Webex video calls now during COVID and working from home. I use a virtual camera using EcammLive and hoping to tie in the M2s loopback for all of my computer sound into the video calls. Can’t wait to try out next week.

yea, for me hands down is Apollo twin.. nothing like having your interface with it's own CPU. The amount of VST's support is amazing. The ability to have a mixer set between the interface and the DAW is what sold me. I can, with my guitar, record both dry and wet at the same time. This leaves with the option of changing the sound using the dry channel. Worth the $900 bucks I spent.

I didn't know that audio interfaces use CPUs, I thought they'd use DSPs...

The MOTU Ultralite series has 8 analog inputs, 2 with preamps. plus it does onboard processing such as EQ and compression per chanel And mixing. I use it for studio or live use. And it is DC coupled so I can route Control Voltage through some of the audio outputs. Great for Eurorack use with Ableton live.

i like to use 2 or 3 audio interfaces at once (Audiobox 1818vsl, behringer uphoria UMC 404hd, and scarlett 2i2) and create an aggregate device on my mac so they all work as inputs at once. That way, my band has 24 total inputs, so we can record live drums, bass, guitar, and vocals all at once.

That’s an interesting take on exploiting digital io. Sounds really cool. I’ve been doing a similar thing, but with an older M Audio interface and a Xenyx mixer. I don’t even know how I figured it out, but rerouting the signal back to the interface gives me enough inputs to record my drum kit with isolation on 4 separate mics. The preamps on the mixer give it better response and output than if I were using preamp-less inputs. But your setup had me wondering if there’s a better way.

I am very happy after I migrated to amp emulation for my bass guitar practicing. The free amp emulators with VST effects give me much better tone then what I get from my cheap amps with no budget for pedals. For live, i plug the interface out to my amp return and I use a custom fotswitch controller that i built using a wooden box and arcade controller buttons. All the pedals effects I ever wanted to play with are a download away from me now.

Great guide! Definitely yes to preamps. They totally help. I bought the Focusrite 2i2 for my home keyboard setup and it does the job well. I also have a small Mackie mixer on the side in case I want to mix in a few more inputs.

no daw sounds better, each one has its one ways and workflow, i've used Logic as my first ever Daw, moved to Studio one for a bit, started Fl Studio for beat productions, and then moved to pro tools for tracking vocals and mixing as my main daw and left logic, and now im switching from Fl to Ableton, what i can tell you is that ive loved each daw but i also hated some minor stuff that gets under your skin

Very informative; although I have yet to understand if there is any detrimental in getting an interface with a bunch of mic/instruments input, if you are using mostly synths (which to my knowledge, does not need a pre-amped input like a mic or a guitar/bass). Most of the interfaces here are displaying mic/instrument plugs number that is more than regular line-in; which makes me think that it is a waste of money to get a 8+ inputs interface, which has 4+ pre-amped, if you are not going to use those pre-amps. Also is there a concern about sound quality when using synths stereo out, with the pre-amped inputs? Thanks BTW I am curious to know if Rachel is using contact lenses, because pupils looks quite large, as if there was no light in the room at all

Either get good Rode Nt1 that is in good condition or buy Neat King bee microphone for $100 ( mic sounds really good but looks ugly) you would need an audio interface with phantom power .. You can buy good usb mics blue yeti they are as good for discord since discord compresses audio so for discord going all out is overkill

You didn't say the main job of the audio interface is to convert analog signal from mic or instruments to digital, the quality of the convertors is an important aspect. Also big factor is the quality of the mic' preamps and that goes all over the place quality wise. As you did say they vary in the number and types of connectin port, but also in type. Many new audio interfaces only have USB MIDI which is limiting if trying to connect keyboard MIDI. There is on brand and model that is very inexpensive, but you find they used all the time because the mic pre amps are medorce and the overall output level is low. So when you see a lot of some piece of gear used, best to ask yourself why are so many used ones available?

Very informative video. I use the Focusrite 18i18 mentioned. It's overkill, but it gives me flexibility if my recording needs change in the future. Plus, just about every month Focusrite provides free or discounted plug-ins from various companies. UA is probably a better interface, or at least more popular, but it is so expensive and it's out of my league. Great job young lady. Keep it up.

I do not know if the inputs of the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 are good or suitable for a Korg Minilogue XD, this is basically what I would like to record into my DAW so far. I have other instruments (guitar for example) but I am not planning to play all them at the same time :) Thank you!!

Hi Rachel - great video. I'm still searching for my perfect audio interface (currently using a Scarlett). I simply want to record voice-overs for my training videos - but don't like the messing around with post-production side of things. The way you choose the right audio interface is the way you should buy everything - look at the test results. But that is really hard, and your clip just makes it all that harder to find that information. In fact, most of the youtube video channels make money from the stuff they sell, so it's very difficult to find someone to trust. There are a few.
