This week we give you what you need to know when it comes to choosing a clutch. From a 100hp build, all the way to 1000hp, your choice of clutch will determine how drivable your car will be. We show you the main differences when it comes to material, springs, and style of clutch and help you pick the right set up for you and your build.

He was right about the 6 puck, my act 6 puck lasted 12,000 miles, never seen abused, always daily. I switch to full face xclutch for longevity but will miss the stiff pedal effort

Thank you for making this video! Exactly the breakdown I was looking for! And exACTLy why I wanted to look this up, because I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ahead of myself, and understood the difference between pucked and not! I would have ordered a pucked clutch for my stock WRX, had it not been for this video (thinking that would be the best, as I plan to lightly modify soon). Man was I wrong! Thanks again!

Awesome video. But I was under the impression that when u choose a clutch u should be thinking about torque rather than horsepower??

That was very informative. I normally use Stage two in my cars Z32 TT etc, but for my starlet turbo I was just about to order a tage 3 for the first time and nearly made the exact mistake you were explaining, thinking it might be better than the stage 2 but I won't do it now. To be honest I never felt a difference from stage 1 to 2, thats why I wanted something a bit more sticky but I guess this isnt the right way to go. My new stock clutch cant take the power of the engine after some upgrades.

Torque and HP are interrelated. Torque is the raw rotational force transmitted across the clutch or whatever is being rotated. Torque it the rotational version of pushing. HP is a function of how fast an engine can produce torque. A simple formula is HP = Torque X RPM/5252 where the torque units are given in ft lbs. So, you can easily see, If an engine produces, say, 200 ft lb of torque at 3,000 RPM it's producing 114.25 HP at that speed. So you might think, "Ok, at 6,000 RPM I suld be making 228.5 HP. That logic, however, would only hold if said engine can produce the same 200 ft lb of torque while spinning at 6,000 RPM, which is almost certainly an incorrect assumption becasue the engine's breathing efficiency, the source of torque and power typically goes down above a certian RPM. Conversely, a racing engine's breathing efficiency, may actually be relatively poor at low RPM and spinning it faster will increase its efficiency - up to a certain point. After that point (RPM) is reached, for example, the turbo simply can not provide more boost pressure at the increased volume needed to fill the volume of your cylinders (for example 2.0 liters) twice as fast. Thus, though you might be able to spin your engine to even higher RPMs before blowing it up, the boost and subsequently the torque curves flatten out, then decline as you rev it even faster. Take a look at some dynomometer plots showing both torque and HP vs RPM and everything I just said will make perfect sense.

@@1RalphEboy That's all well understood, but by application, I don't see how HP really matters unless leverage (gear ratios) is involved. Say a car has a peak of 500HP at 5600RPM. My target there would be gear ratios and tire size to keep the engine rotating near 5600 as much as possible. Leveraging (pun intended) torque multiplication of the final drive ratio to maximize power to the ground. There is no leverage between the engine and the clutch. The maximum stress applied to the clutch will be determined strictly by the peak torque output. So, a 525lb-ft peak at 4200RPM will be the highest the plate has to grab. Torque actually drops when going above that RPM and all useful power is determined further down the line by gearing and tire diameter. So, while the engine is producing 500HP, the crankshaft output can be 25lb-ft less than the peak. Meaning the clutch is actually under less stress while the transmission+pinion+spur+rollout take up the job of controlling power delivery. The closest correlation I could see would be due to road conditions combined with the lower ratios of the higher gears. A pothole at 12:1 will definitely have less impact than at 1:1. So I guess something like "torque noise" could be considered for high gears. Otherwise, anything connected directly to the crankshaft can only experience peak strain during the engine's peak torque.

McLeod doesn’t make a sprung hub twin disc clutch at this time. I did discover Tilton ST-246 is a sprung hub twin disc. I need to contact them regarding my TKX. Due to solid hub floater plate chatter not being ideal for the street a sprung hub reports to be quiet below the 2000 rpm lite load.

I am building a front wheel drive 2010 mini S R56 with an N14 engine. My end goal is a streetable at night and daily in high traffic car with 500hp. The stock hp is 175ish. It's Turbocharged and has all the bolt ons, a built bottom end with cylinder support and forged internals, and methanol. All I need now is a bigger turbo, head with bigger intake/exhaust valves, and figure out what to do with my transmission. Can you suggest a clutch and flywheel kit for me, and do I need to do anything with the rest of the trans like the gears and all? Thanks guys

Blah blah blah. I understand what each one isn’t “designed” to do, but I’ve daily’d normal design, and 6-pick design clutches, and I have no issue driving either as a daily. Really, the most important part is how the vehicles clutch operating system is designed. There are twin disk clutches that are heavy as hell, and others that are light like OEM, all using the same disk material. It’s just that the two vehicles are designed differently. I have a MK7 GTI, and I’ve used a DKM Stage 2 (which uses a normal disk design with woven brass with organic material and slight alloy backings in it), and a Southbend Stage 3 Endurance (which uses a normal disk design with Kevlar), and the DKM Stage 2 was insanely heavier than the Southbend. It should be the other way around lol. Now, I’m putting in a XClutch Stage 2 kit (uses a 6-puck design made with ceramic), and I’m told it feels very close to OEM in terms of pedal feel. It should actually be the heaviest if the three! Lol
What clutch should you use?
