How to chose a saw sharpening file to fit your hand saw

How do you choose a file for saw sharpening? When sharpening a hand saw, chose a file where the tip of the saw tooth does not reach the middle of the file face. If it does, then it will wear out the middle twice as fast.

I have found that a reasonable quality normal tryangular file works alright and I have not found any problems with the saws yet

Very true. I usually tell people just go get a triangular file from the big box store. As long as it's the right size it will work fine. It may not last for as many sharpenings, but you'll get more sharpenings per dollar spent.

So… does it possibly mean that it's always better to use a big ass file to sharpen a saw? I'm confused… then what's the purpose of the smaller ones?

The smaller the file, the tighter, the radius of the corner. So you wouldn't want to use a large file on a small tooth. Otherwise you'd end up with a large radius at the bottom of the tooth.

I looked into Valley for sharpening... they have some nice stuff. But, my problem is not knowing what the correct angle to set chisels, planer blades, or axe bits too. The other issue is finding a jig or booklet showing me the proper way to sharpen hand saws and Bucking saws. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have several videos on most of those topics. When it comes to chisels plains and most hand tool blades, the angle really doesn't matter as much as people think it does. Generally, anywhere between 25 and 35° will work. I put my carving tools at around 20°. My bench chisels at around 25 to 30. My plane irons are around 30 to 35°.

CONFUSED! You say "don't choose a file that leaves the tooth right in the middle of the file" and then you chose a file that did just that? Can you clarify?

In this case the tooth was ever so slightly short of the center of the file. Usually I want it somewhere between 1/3 of the way up the face to the middle. But you never wanted to cross the middle. Otherwise you end up wearing out the middle of the file twice as fast and that's the most important place as that is what actually sharpens the tip of the tooth.

Generally you want the width of the face of the file to be at least double the length of the back of the tooth. If it's less then as you turn the file the middle is getting worn twice as much.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo yes. I use those abrasive brown disks. I can easily grind those 3 blade edge that many companies advertise.

oh my word please no. that is going to take WAY longer and be so much harder to control. With a hand file it is like 2 seconds each tooth and you get them exactly where you want.
