How to Use a Clay Bar and Clay Mitt.
To remove embedded dirt, contaminants, tree sap, tar and overspray is made easy using detailing Clay Bars and Clay Mitts. in this video I show you how to use them to get the best results using my techniques.
Firstly I show you how to use a traditional Clay Bar to remove any surface dirt and contamination that can't be removed by washing alone. I show you what to use to get the best results and finish, and discuss when and why you should use a Clay Bar rather than a Clay Mitt. We use Chemical Guys Yellow OG Clay Bar in this section.
In the next half of the video, I use a Farecla Clay mitt and Meguiars Microfiber wash mitt which I picked up at a local Halfords car accessory story to show that You can still get great results using products that are easily and readily available. You can see how fast it is to use the Clay Mitt compared to the Clay Bar however I believe you need both to do the job properly.

Sir, Thank you for your video regarding claying a car. My car had never been clayed, but I decided to use the clay mitt, you suggested,and the results where fantastic. If I would have used the traditional method,with a small piece of clay, the job would have taken all day. Many Thanks.

You're very welcome. The mitt is easy to use, but the bar is good to get in to places that the mitt doesn't. Problem with the bar is that it takes ALOT longer to do, but it is more thorough. The mitt though is a great starting point and is definitely better than nothing.

i use clay bar for panels and that clay mitt for the windows does a great job, great video cheers.

That's a great way. I find the mitt is good but I don't think it beats a clay bar for me, I prefer the precision on bodywork to make sure I can get in to all areas of the bodywork. Thanks for the comment :-)

When I first started using snow foam I covered the complete car, better to do an area @ a time, more lube the better it is,less wastage as it drips away before you can get the best out of the soap!!, happy claying if u try!!

I have both clay towel and traditional clay, but I prefer the traditional one for more contaminated cars. If it's a quick clay and seal and the car is not that bad I use the towel. I use a dedicated clay lubricant that doesn't have gloss enhancers or waxes in it or the same suds from the wash. Great video as always!!

Thanks :) - I'd never used a Clay towel / Mitt before, so you can see how surprised I was by how good it was! The benefit of Clay Bars are that you can get different grades to suit the level of contamination, where as the Mitts and Towels are like one size fits all. I think it's best to use both like you. Use a Bar first then use the Mitt as a top-up. I'm a cheapskate when it comes to claylubes LOL!

Nice video. I agree about BH clay it can be so hard and difficult to keep soft in winter months. I like to use the clay mitt in colder weather and in summer spend time at leisure with a clay bar.

Yeah, I don't know why it's so hard, I normally leave it soaking in a cup of hot water to soften it, but I find it really difficult to use. I'm with you, claying is a summer job for me. I still prefer the bar to the mitt though, I'm just old fashioned that way.

No probs, thanks for the comments. You can use either, but I find that a bucket is better with a mitt. The reason is that the spray disapates faster and is better with the smaller surface area of a piece of Clay Bar, and the bucket is better for using with the larger surface area of the mitt. Because you can cover a larger area at a time with the mitt, I don't think a spray is best if that makes sense. Let me know what you choose.

What you using in the bucket along side the clay mitt? , I've used snow foam in the past, quite good!!

Never thought of using that, it'd probably be better for lubrication. I just use a standard wash shampoo, something like Auto Finesse Lather.

Will the bilt and hamber mar paint and is there a way to prevent maring during claying?

Yes it will, the meguiars one does too and that's alot softer. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do it's just down the the nature of using clays, I have used it on some cars and not had marring, but when I used a clay on my Audi (I forget whether it was the megs or Chemical Guys) it marred the bumper but nowhere else. One thing that can help is to use LOTS of lubricating spray but that's not guaranteed to work but can help.

Am I ok to hand polish then wax after the clay?

Yes, you've got it right. Claying the paint work may introduce some light 'marring' or 'hazing', where the paintwork goes a bit dull. Just polish by hand (ideally machine if you have one) after and you'll have silky smooth paint. Then protect your hard work with wax.

Thanks! You'll have many hours of fun going over every square inch of the car with the clay bar, but it is rewarding. I use Pete's '53 from Chemical Guys but it doesn't last very long, 1-2 months. But I use Gyeon Cure after washing with my drying towel and that helps. If you want a long lasting wax, something like colonite is great. Otherwise look in to something like the Fusso coat waxes. Hope this helps!

How many times a year would you clay your car? More in the summer or winter? Thanks in advance

It depends really on how dirty the car gets etc. The easiest way I would say is that if you do the 'bag test' shown in the vid every 6 months after washing. You can clay as often as you like but the only thing is that you may need to polish the paint a little more as some clays can leave marring on the paints surface. I would tend to clay whenever you polish the car. An ideal way may be to clay at the beginning of summer and then polish and wax your car, then clay at the beginning of winter, then do the same. This will give you an easy to stick to time frame. If you're using a clay mitt then you can clay more often (around 3-4 months) as they seem to be a bit more forgiving.

Hi, The clay mitt won't really remove a sealant, ideally you'd want to use something like Dodo Juice Lime Prime or a similar polish or paint cleaner. This will remove any existing glazes and sealants as it's a microabrasive. Other than that you're 100% correct. So, your process would be: Clay Mitt, then Lime Prime or a polish (this will also help to remove any marring left behind by the clay mitt). Then Blacklight, followed by Jet Seal and Finally a Black Wax. You should get longer lasting results as your Blacklight is below the layer of Jet Seal, maybe even apply 2 layers of Jet Seal if you have time.

Didnt the farecla made scraches? You dont have very foam. More water i see to use as lubricant.

No, It didn't cause any scratching for me, you have to make sure the mitt stays clean though. I use the same amount of wash soap as I would use when washing the car, as long as there is the right amount of soap in the water it will act as a lubricant, you don't need foam to lubricate.

I now mainly use Gyeon Bathe and I would 100% recommend it. One cap full to a bucket of water produces an amazing wash solution.

I personally prefer a real clay bar myself, but some people do like the clay mitt. It's definitely faster, but not accurate like a bar is. Plus with the mitt you can't see what you've removed like you do with a bar. I think the mitt is more aimed at the hobbyist detailer, or someone just getting started.
