In this video, I walk through the process of cleaning the carburetor on a Generac 4000 XL generator. This generator ran fine when the choke was applied, but the engine surged as it hunted for fuel when the choke was opened all the way. Cleaning the carburetor resolved this issue and the generator now runs fine. After the video, I did order a replacement float bowl gasket and replaced it.

Very helpful! My Duromax 4400e would not start. After watching this, I felt confident to try myself. After removing and dismantling the carburetor, I could see that the main jet was actually clogged with something. I used wire and Gumout carb cleaner to clean out every port I could find. I put it back together and it started easily on the first pull. Very happy! Thanks again for your help on this.

Good vid, have not done B&S carbs yet. Champion, yup, they have tiny tiny holes in the barrel of the carb at the throttle end and a rubber plug by the idle adjustment, found a chunk of black stuff. engine worked great after.

Yes I still have her...needs control arms and a new valve body for the transmission. Rear end is acting up too. I'm looking to Finance something. It would cost 5 grand to fix everything lol!

Great video Mark I picked this same generator up for $50 a few years ago and got it running I also had to take apart the starter switch to clean up contacts since I'm to cheap to buy a new 1 lol but you wouldn't have to remember what post the red wire with the fuse goes on wasn't paying attention, battery side post or starter post ?

To keep my generators clean and running clean I always use high octane fuel, after running on gas or propane I always run the unit until it shuts down after turning the fuel line off. secondly, i start the unit every three weeks or so while I do yard work and change oil yearly.

You are better off running non ethenol fuel over high octane.

Great video! I was able to remove and clean my extremely gunky carb and get the generator running again. One question - normally there is an air/fuel mixture screw that is also removed for cleaning- or is this carb an EPA emissions model that has an tamper-proff aluminum plug covering it? Have you ever removed the plug and had to clean that jet? If so, which plug is it? Sorry for all the questions.....

Mine has a small plastic washer that goes over the arms that control the governor. Not sure I put it back on right.

Wondering if you could tell me please where that tiny spring under the rod that connents to choke rod connects to as mine broke cpl weeks cwaiting on part , can see tiny hole under governor rod on choke blask plastic lever on mine but where does it connect on the other side as was hoping to see in this video but cannot ?

I ran my generator for a few minutes yesterday and after I turned it off, fuel was leaking badly out of the air filter. I guess my needle valve pin is bad. I’m hoping I can make it through this hurricane without losing power. Thanks for the video.

Hello Mark I have an old Generac 3500xl my father-in-law gave me.I have a question. Are the carbs the same for the 3500 xl has the 4000. The 3500xl was made in 1993 they’ve discontinued most of the parts.. I found one on eBay would like to find one cheaper thanks

Thank you so much for this video. A friend of mine gave me this exact generator which would only run with half choke and kinda rough. Every so often, when opening the gas valve, gas would drip into the air filter compartment and the generator would not start. I followed your instructions to the letter. For never in my life attempting a repair of this nature, it took me about an hour. ( I could not believe the amount of sediment in the carb bowl and throughout!) Bottom line is the generator does not leak fuel anymore and now runs fine with the choke closed. I am going to order a replacement air filter, spark plug, oil filter and gaskets to complete the service now that I have the confidence to do so, but I do have one question tho. My idle control switch seems not to have any impact on the generator when turned on. It runs exactly the same in the on and off position. Any clue as to why? Could it be a bad on/off switch? Anyway, thanks again for a great video!

Hello Mark, So, this carb did not have a long skinny tube with tiny holes< an emulsion tube? or what I call maybe wrongly a jet? I worked on carbs for B&S back in the 70's so I guess as Bob Dylan said (Paraphrased) And the carbs they are a changin'

What is the rubber stopper for next to the center tube in the float bowl? You didn't comment on that in the video. Should that be removed to clean inside the stopped tube? Is there a jet in there?

I saw and wondered the same thing, I've never seen a rubber plug inside a carb before, and I know from working on these that it is a passage that is covered by the stepped rubber plug

Looks like the air vent was not aligned inside the shroud when you put the breather cover on.

You totally missed the crankcase ventilation hose attachment to the air filter. I saw that it is not connected as you reassembled it and it is not lined up properly. Overtime expect a dirty oil film to accumulate over that side of the engine. It is a bear to get back, you either need 6 hands like that Hindu god to get all those together, or perhaps a tool that can grab that crankcase hose from the inside which I theorize must exist.

I'm thinking the only way is to remove the valve cover, fan shroud and filter box and attach the hose. Then put it all back on the engine. One wonders how it might be done in the factory. I was able to do mine by removing the valve cover end but you really don't want to do that. It took me a couple hours, to stuff it back in the cover hole. Not mush sense if you put another air filter in it if it just sucks junk through the hole..

Neither one of those generators have Briggs motors on them. Generac makes their one motors.

I buy parts for generac engins and I’m a Briggs dealer. Trust me generac makes their own motor

Nope generac makes their own engine and always have. Generac and Briggs source their carbs from the same manufacturer but that is not a Briggs engine.

If u did not explain how a screwdriver worked and how air blows out of a compressor air line fitting ianyone who owns a screwdriver already knows how it works just get to the point mr pain to watch man didn't even run it fail would make beter 6 minutes video whit out the jiba jaba
