We often received inquiries about how to clean off the ‘crud’ that can build up on Advancer® Kiln Shelves and end up on the bottom of pots. While quick clean up and regular surface maintenance using a GlazeEraser® Hand Tool or scraper can go a long way… It’s true that excess glass can build up on the surface of Advancer® over years of firing. If you run into this situation, we have found that short of sand blasting, a semi rigid, silicon carbide disc is an effective way to clean the surface of Advancer kiln shelves. It is less aggressive than a diamond wheel, yet still very effective.
It should be noted that using any kind of cleaning tool can dull the glassy surface of the shelves. However the silicon carbide matrix of Advancer® Kiln Shelves will naturally reoxidize and ‘heal’ in subsequent firings.
Make sure to use all appropriate safety precautions and equipment including, hand, eye, ear and respiratory protection when using an angle grinder!!
