I was an Army grunt. No matter what differences there are between the branches of the US Armed Forces, the suffering of turning into the arms room is universal. Once I had a Drill Sgt tell me, "The star chamber is like an asshole. Stick your finger deep enough and you're gonna find shit."

I like coming back from the range, getting a good cup of coffee and cleaning my rifle while listening to some good music. That's therapy right there. Conversely I hated weapons cleaning in the Corps. The Corps always had a way of taking fun things, and making them less fun.

I appreciate your approach of real world cleaning. A lot of these think we're always in a shop with machinist grade equipment to make it look like it's never been fired.

I was taught by my Marine Corps.Col. that made it home from Vietnam, to clean a really fouled fighting rifle , to use Gumout Carb and Choke cleaner. Removes all the dirt and oil , scrub out the barrel and oil good, and gun grease the BCG pin with gun grease to prevent gaulding. Worked for decades! Works when you don't have time for complete teardown.

Been Following Yall for a while now. I’m going to take this as a sign to get my first one. I was looking at them at gun show today and this is the first video I see is Chadd telling how to clean it. I always look for the sign in life.

We ran our A2s pretty dry most of the time, but they were well worn in. After a couple hundred rounds or if we knew we were going to expend some quantity of rounds we'd lube em up pretty good, just seemed to cut down on that excessive build up and make cleaning a lot easier. A lot of shooting and being in a sandy environment, we might scrub real good and follow up with a steamy water bath/ hose out. But then you've gotta make sure it all gets dried good and follow up with a lube coat. Spin that chamber brush clockwise real good and it helps to get that chamber cleaned out better.

Thanks for the refresher in cleaning a rifle. It had been many years since I cleaned one, probably 1998-99. That changed recently when I finally bought me one of my own that I did not have to return to an arms room. I am looking for an outdoor range in NE GA to go do some training. I am not far from GA Gun Club and they have a 100yd indoor range that might work but I want to be able to get prone to zero my new rifle irons. I have not decided on an optic or light yet but they are on my short list of must haves. I have gotten myself a bipod, AFG, padded sling, MLOK handguard and Magpul R44 hard case. I picked up 300 rds M193 55gr 5.56 for my SOLGW 16" Mid gas M4 Legacy Mil Spec furniture FSB LFT and 500 rds of 124gr 9MM for my CZ75BD. Looking at level 3A+ soft armor and level 4 plate carrier pocket and mag and first aid carrier. Lots to consider. Trying to prioritize within my budget. Disabled and unable to work in my prior area of expertise . I still train every day I can at least 6 days a week sometimes 5 if I overdo it one day and my feet hurt too bad. I was Regular Army 92-99 and it tore my feet up. Got to keep it low impact training. #Respect

Reminds me of what a weapon would look like after shooting a lot of blanks during training. Can of brake cleaner then run boiling water down the bore then lubricate. worked every time and never had an issue. If you got a can of compressed air even better. As far as the armory looking over the weapons before they were turned in.. yep I can remember the whole company being held up because someone refused to do a proper job. No one in the company got dismissed unless every weapon was cleaned properly and turned in.

When I was in the Army, we'd usually get released for the day after we came back from the range, as long as we cleaned are rifles and had them turned into the arms room, after passing the inspection by the arms room guy. My problem was, my buddy was the arms room guy. He couldn't leave until the last weapon was turned in. He didn't want me leave without him to go hit the bars or party. So no matter how spotless I had that rifle, he'd kick me back until I was the last guy left. Good times!

Back in the 80's as a Seabee we had Defensive combat training in 29 Palms by Marines. We trained with blanks with the plugs. Those rifles got filthy fast. I hunted with black powder and always cleaned my rifle with hot soapy water. I took my M16 apart and got in the shower and cleaned everything with soap and water and a toothbrush to get the heavy stuff off. Worked great. Of course we always failed the first 2 inspections, that was a given.

A long time ago (13 years ago) in a place far, far away (Georgia), I did a stint as the weapons custodian for our division in charge of all our light weapons. Once a year, I was required by some reg to clean and inspect every weapon in inventory. I'd get my team and grab some volun-tolds, and we'd take over some picnic tables or such on base to just sit there and speed clean guns all day long. The ones that were used regularly were usually fairly cleaned by whoever last checked them out, so we just had to strip, spray them down, scrub a bit, and dry them out with clean rags. But the old dogs that had sat there unused since the last year we cleaned, ALWAYS had more carbon that somehow managed to squeeze out of some place or another and would require a bunch of work. My favorite was one who's paperwork went back to the early 60's. The record was thick with all of it's entries and travels. It had the record from being changed from full auto to 3 rd and a number of other repairs over the years. The other cool rifle was one with a heavy barrel we had for some reason. Every person going downrange to the sandbox took one look at her and passed because they didn't want the weight. She was actually one of the better ones when we'd do the cleaning; she just was smoother than most of the others for some reason. Some of them were of the devil being difficult with us, but not that one. All the rest were generic and we'd just clean, function check, inspect, update paperwork, and put them back in their pelican cases to go back to the armory. I'd go home smelling of Hoppes 9, fingers dirty with carbon and oil and my wife would send me straight to the washing machine for my clothes and then right to the shower.

what makes this whole process alot easier is a proper solvent. I got this shooters choice gun scrub, works really well, it breaks down the carbon to where it wipes off. That and some fitted chamber wipes with a rag/cotton swabs go along way.

Im admitting that im commenting before the video is complete because it instantly reminded me of my time in Iraq... m249/m16... 04-05 and...m16...08-09 in Iraq...i always kept my weapons cleaned and maintained but what i would do is if there was a fob/cob or base with showers i would take my weapon into the shower and spray it/wash it off really good and literally by the time i got back to my tent or connext box it would be dry and i would only have to wipe it down with clp after making sure there wasn't carbon built up anywhere after firing it when I had to...work smarter and not harder, hooah!!!...and thank you for the information and videos that you do.

My first unit at 101st was hell dealing with the arms room but when I went to 3ID I loved dealing with those guys and one of them was in sorb pt with me so he just took my weapons with trust.

I also run a MK18 10.3 Upper like that (a registered SBR) and run a YHM Turbo T2 Suppressor and YES, it gets filthy. I use Montana Extreme Bore Solvent on my bores and at times also on the BCG. It negates needing a bore brush and usually one pass is enough IF you let it sit a while. That being said, it needs to be Deactivated by running a standard CLP or other bore solvent in another patch down the bore. After that I dry patch and am done with the bore. I also make that the last item to clean letting the solvent do it's thing. I clean the internals with either Shooters Lube or Clenzoil solvents using long stick swabs. As far as the BCG, I do still use the steel type carbon removal tools but the trick there is to carefully cut the carbon and not dig into the steel of the BCG and Bolt. A couple of other technical points: I replaced all of my Gas Rings with Coil Type Rings which there is no need to align like the original type gas rings. They are fairly easy to install and give trouble free performance for a lot longer than traditional rings. Word of caution on Coil Rings, not all bolts are created equal and some may not fit but if the bolt you own is MILSPEC (not commercial spec), you should be good. Second, in my MK18 lower, I use a single stage TriggerTech AR Duty Trigger (a Cassette Trigger) and super resilient to debris and carbon/powder fouling. Still, I spray out the lower to make sure the fouling is cleaned out. Lastly, for suppressor use, I have a Bootleg Gas Adjustable BCG which helps vent the excess gasses out to lower the blowback but I also notice it helps with fouling to some degree. It has 4 settings (two non-suppressed, two with). Still, suppressor use is going to have a round count limit when the gun just isn't going to run well anymore without cleaning. It's just something to be mindful about in different scenarios. Anyhow, enjoyed the video, spot on man!

A lady had a Smith and Wesson M &P AR 15. .556 ,She said she was upset because she read that it was a gas rifle and they didn't tell her where to pour. The gas The said she had been looking everywhere on that gun to fill it back up with gas Beautiful. Rifle I didn't know whether to laugh or cry

USAF SP from back in the 1980s. We were issued the original M-16 without the forward assist. The arms room crews could be somewhat difficult then too, especially with The Pig. I found that chrome BCGs were easier to keep clean.

In Army Basic in 1991, we had one M-16 that had an "X" in the serial number. I was told it was a prototype that was somehow still in service. It wasn't mine though, but I guess the point stands, we had some old shit. Getting ready for our final inspection, we had to bring each individual part to the DS office. If it wasn't clean enough, we had to either go back or, more likely, get dropped for push ups while they gave the piece a once over. They had a chamber brush on a drill and a straight pick. It was brutal. They'd take your bolt carrier and poke the face of the inside where the firing pin shoulder would be, or the other side where the gas enters the carrier. It was pitted and carbon would fill in the pits and get worn smooth. The DS would poke that pick around and tap the bolt carrier on his desk. It looked like a pepper mill. All the while, you're doing push ups or singing the National Anthem, or whatever else they'd think up to entertain themselves.

Never in my wildest imagination would I conceive of people wanting to watch clean rifles! About as fun as pulling guard duty on an empty box!

12:00 Gas tubes get build up too. I always spray some cleaner down the tube until it runs clean. Can effect how weapon operates if it’s clogged up

During basic at Ft Jackson in 1991, we immersed our rifles into garbage cans of boiling water and let them soak to loosen the carbon build up. Then we cleaned and lubed them using an all-in-one product called LSA. We did not soak the plastic parts nor the trigger group for fear the plastic would be damaged. This was the cleaning method our Drill Sergeants taught us, which was quite different than the cleaning method then taught by the Army in our classes. Thought you might like to know that. BTW, my M-16 was made by Ford Motor Company and featured a split open muzzle flash suppressor.

What I like about AR style platform is if you go a couple hundred rounds past what I normally would clean it, it still runs.

I find when building a new are that sometimes the barrel doesn't match perfectly where the feed ramps are with the upper receiver it helps to grind a little bit off the feed ramp to make sure that there's no lip

Shooting the new SilencerCo Velos flow through technology suppressor. It definitely has less blow back fouling than a regular type can on an AR-15. It’s not a huge big difference but every little less fouling is a plus.

Hey Chad; have you tried Ballistol? I started using that stuff and threw away all the bore scrubber, gun cleaners, and gun oils I had! It’s a cleaner and lubricant. When I first got it, I cleaned what I thought was a clean gun, and ended up cleaning ALL of my guns. It works on black powder too!

I got a PWS MK 116 Pro. You can get short stroke piston systems like the Superlative Arms/Adams piston uppers. They run a lot cooler and cleaner.

Try Ballistol cleaner and lube. You can even spray it in the barrel, and then run dry patches through. It does a fine job.

Back in the 80s we had a first sgt. That made us us dri cleaning fuild . Then after inspection a good coat of oil.

Everything is this vid is a+, my only critique is the notches in the gas rings. The bolt will work with a single gas ring & the fact that they rotate means it make no difference whether they’re aligned or not when you reassemble the bcg.

Do the teams kind of cold-shoulder PJs at first or are they really happy to have them along? 1975. We used LSA to clean rifles.. lol kerosene and a hand drill. Always passed inspection.. You need a gun ultra sonic cleaner. Clean parts and lubricates.nothing wrong with soap and water. Pressure washing

I use Militec One. I think they still sell it, a bottle lasts me a few years. Anyway it treats the metal. I put my new guns in a car or something and let them get hot then I put that stuff on and let is sit on there an hour or so. Then it comes out of the metal subsequently whenever the part get warm from friction. After that you can go to the range and shoot and the metal gets wet, that militec comes right out of the metal. Makes it easier to clean too. They say troops in Iraq used it and they gave it free to them back in that war. That is when I started using it. Its on all my guns.

Get some Gun Scrubber or non-chlorinated brake cleaner for spraying the trigger group. It also helps to blast crap oit of the star chamber and anywhere else.

It was over 35 years ago, or so i decided not to clean one AR 15 to see how long it took to start screwing up from fouling. Shot it here and just put it up without cleaning it. Trying remember but i know i was over 3,000 rounds and under 4,000, and i had to start using the forward assist and such. I think that rifle was a PAC West. My father was with me that day when it was starting to screw up. Lol. He saud what did you do that for? I said I just wanted to see how many rounds it would take. My father started out in the navy as a gunners mate. Switched over to the Army. He was the presidents 100 5 years in a row. 2nd 75th rangers and at NSA. Spent some time in the special warfare center for Bragg and other places. I was in the military too. Like i said just wanted to know what it took to get it to screw up from lack of cleaning. I have been cleaning guns since i was 8 years old. Different America then. Used to walk down the riad with my .22 by myself at 10 years old and could go into the local gas station or hardware store to buy my own rounds for my rifle. America and the quality of the average American has gone in the toilet, unfortunately. This was by design. They are taking down the country from the inside. They could not do it militarily they had to do it through infiltration and really stupid american people to use. Hopefully, this will get turned around, but it will be bumpy. The masses have been brainwashed. But they are getting slowly shocked out of it.

What if you give the trigger assembly a good action cleaner spray? (I follow with compressed air and it works wonders...)

So I love to shoot but I hate to clean guns. I haven't figured out how to shoot and not have to clean so I switched to all piston ar platform rifles. It's makes a big difference especially when shooting suppressed

Us Georgia men do struggle with some words , I use Bore-Tech products to clean my system with the Dewey rods

Just a tip for getting all the carbon build up out of the chamber, take your cloth patches and a dental pick, shove the cloth patch in the chamber after folding it down. Use the dental pick to run that patch all around it to the different angles. It will get almost all if not all the carbon out.

Learned to clean my service rifles, at the Basic School, Marine Corps Base Quantico, circa 1993. Damn Lance Corporal Armorers fukked with us 2ndLts when it was time to return crew served weapons to the Armory. Always on late Friday afternoons. Thankfully, we kept our M16A2 service rifles in our barracks rooms (locked into the wall of our closets, yeah, back then, officers were trusted). Nevertheless, our rifles were immaculate. We, young 2ndLts, had to set the example, even when no one is looking. Now I need to go clean my AR-15 Smith and Wesson Commandos 😊

Didnt mention it here, but wearing those green Cajun Reeboks keeps the dirty gun juice off your feet as well

I am usually not a fan of gimmicky stuff and my go to suppressed AR is an Adam’s Arm 11.5” piston gun, but on the rest of the ARs I use a CAT M4 tool. It really is amazing how well it works on taking carbon off a bolt - especially on reward radius. Is there a way I can send you one?
