It was a pleasure just watching and hearing your voice. I live the fact you come from Alabama. One of the deep parts of the South and I wanted to see how differently you would cook turnip greens. I was born in the north but my grandmother came from Richmond VA. and her kitchen always had turnip greens, collard and kale. It was nice to see the turnip roots. Grandmom called them white turnips. You gave me a part of my childhood again. Thank you.

Great video, Nancy! My mom and my aunts used to cook turnips but I never realized how much work went into it. I saw some pretty farm-fresh turnips at the farmer’s market today and thought I’d like to make some. I’d have been lost without your video! I appreciated your clear, detailed directions!❤️

You are my go to cook! Love these recipes. I too am from Alabama, right next to the Florida line. These recipes are like the ones I was raised with. Except the turkey tails. We always cooked with bacon and fried some chicken. Right at the last 5 minutes we would put the fried chicken in the turnips to soak up the pot licker. 😊

Hey Starkey put your greens in a slow cooker so you can do other things around house. No need to stand over the stove. 2nd for faster cook time buy a pressure cooker set the timer for 1 hour for any type of greens. Turn ip and mustard cook faster than collard. Collard set timer 1 hour. Get a airfryer / pressure cooker/ slow cooker and rice cooker all in one.all in one

Love the video Nancy. I was born and raised in NJ, moved to NY and spent most of my life there. However, even though I'm from Italian / German descent, I love southern cooking, and I love vegetables. I don't think I've met a green I didn't like. You have confirmed that I am cooking my turnip greens correctly. Will be doing turnip greens in a few hours. Wanted smoked turkey drumstick, but all they had at the store were necks and wings. The necks were way expensive so I got an nice meaty wing. Never have seen tails, but I would have bought them. Oh well. Keep at it Nancy.

I watched this video and you are really good at teaching! I am not born and bread in the south but I have lived in Georgia for the last 12 years. Basically I married a fine Southern gentleman who was raised with great cooked southern food. His mama and grandmama were great cooks. I have done good on a lot of the dishes he loves but I have struggled with greens! All most every time I attempt to make them he is polite and eats a couple bites but I end up throwing them out. I think its pretty much about getting good flavor from the smoked meat. But he likes the vinegar and I'm sure the sugar in there. If I make a pot the size you made how much vinegar and sugar should I start with and when do I put it in? Thank you so much! Subscribed because I know I can learn from you. Btw I'm 53yrs old and my daughters always told me I am a great cook so I do cook but it take learning to make great southern food!

Thanks so much for subscribing! I’m a firm believer in adding a little and then tasting. My mama always advised you can always add but once it’s in there you’re stuck lol. For this pot start with about 2 tablespoons of vinegar. I like to use pepper sauce which is vinegar that has cayenne peppers in it. For sugar same thing start with 1-2 tablespoons. This will vary though bc some greens are not as bitter as others. For example if the frost has fallen on the greens they won’t be as bitter. I hope this helps!

@@KitchenNotesfromNancy Thanks for replying so fast! I can't wait to make these tomorrow! I'm gonna follow your advise about the vinegar and sugar. As a matter of fact I know the pepper sauces you are talking about! I've got a couple that we really like. I'm gonna try a little sugar in the recipe than add the pepper sauce at the end! I now feel confident to make greens! My husband is gonna be so surprised at how good they are! BTW I am making his favorite meal of cubed steak and potatoes! Cornbread and now greens that are great. I love turkey tails but no one had any but I have some beautiful meaty smoked pork neck bones and smoked slab bacon! I saw your videos and I'm so excited that you cook southern food! I finally have found someone I feel like I can really learn the good stuff!! Tytytytyty! It means a lot!

Oh, my, my, my! Absolutely enjoy the turnip greens...and collards...and kohlrabi...and mustard...and.... Your presentation is spectacular! Reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. Yes, almost all leaves had vinegar added to them after the cooking as well. Coming from Polish ancestry, garlic is very much added. I also like to flip the tables once in a while and add ground pork sausage. I WILL be making your pepper sauce!

I love ❤️ your video. I am picking turnips and mustards as we speak and I normally wash them in baking soda or salt ... today I washed them in salt since you are washing yours in salt. 😆 I do know how to cook greens since I grew up in the country and my mom cooked them all the time but I love to watch different videos to see how people prepare them and I love what you did. I do put some sugar and my greens, ... not to make them sweet but just enou.gh to take the bitterness out. I'm using a combination of ham and bacon this time.
