You can use tomato ketchup also as it contains alkaline properties of vinegar which can clean stuff

Yes very true, i was only 12 yrs old in 1960, no sponges, we use only coconut husks,to clean a lot of vessels,with salt n tamarind usually during festivals time. This is nothing of today..

@john doe depends on where you live. If there's more moisture in air it oxidises and loses its shine. Drier the air, better it is for it remain shinier.

I tried and it Perfect solution for copper, I think we can dip it in viniger and salt solution for some time so it can penetrate to all corner location where the brush cannot go. And what about for brass same will do ?
