How To Clean Diesel Tractor Fuel Injectors

I'm cleaning the diesel injectors on my Yanmar tractor. Sometimes you need to remove the carbon from your fuel injector. If your diesel fuel injector is really worn out you might have to rebuilt the injector. This one was in pretty good shape after we tore it down and cleaned it. TOOLS USED ↓↓↓↓

This is a late 1970's Yanmar YM2000B 2WD diesel tractor.
The engine on this tractor is a Yanmar 2TR20-A.

I have a 1980? Yanmar 2002d, it just started blowing white smoke out of the blow by hose which led me to think about checking/cleaning the fuel injectors. Thanks for posting this video, looking forward to seeing what you do with yours.

I appreciate your video, I wish you would do one on how to get them damn things out of the head when it’s off the engine!!! I’ve done the slide hammer with a Pitnum arm puller till my arms are worn out!! Gonna try to find a socket or something to slip over it, find a bolt with the same thread n diameter of the return line banjo bolt but long enough to make it out of the top of the socket, and use it with washers to make my own puller. Wish me luck. Great little video you did here, thanks

I just wiggled them out of the head. I DON'T recommend this, but some guys pull the decompression lever disconnect the fuel lines and and then bump the motor over. They should pop out. I make sure they don't fly out and hit the ground.

Matt, on the toothpick idea..I picked up a set of wires, I think from welding tip servicing years ago?? and there are a nice variety of diameters for the hard wires. They work great on other nozzles and very small orifices so I'm thinking I'll try these to clear the holes in the injector. They don't break or bend either! Wouldwork

where did you get the socket organiser you are working on? looks great

It is an older Craftsman socket organizer. It fits regular sockets great, but the thicker black impact sockets don't fit in the holes.

No clue. I do know a John Deere 950 is the same engine as this tractor and they will work in that

Did you happen to come across what the pop pressure was for those injectors? I have three on my tractor and I bought new inserts and needles. One of the three was working properly I believe in popping around 2400 PSI. The other two were just peeing out. After replacing all three inserts, all three of them are popping at a pressure around 1400 PSI. Which I think should be higher but I can't find a spec for it anywhere. They are popping consistently now but I may have to play with them to increase the pressure if I can find it specs anywhere. Thanks a lot.

Yes. I made this video about it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8t9a9d4ta7Vpmw.html These exact injectors pop at about 2275 PSI or 160 kg sq cm. 1500 PSI is wayyy too low! What tractor model do you have? I have service manuals. I can tell you the opening PSI. You have to get OEM Yanmar shim packs and re-shim them. The paper-thin shims will raise the pressure by 100's of PSI.

I found a shim set for a different Yanmar injector. Are they all the same or do I have to order a specific one? Thanks for all your help.

I watch your video from pop testing. The Yanmar shims information wasn't in the remarks. But I zoomed in and got the number and ordered a pack. That video helped a lot.

How did you get the injector out of the tractor?

Unbolted th two bolts on the top plate holding it in, and disconnected the metal fuel line. I just pulled the injector out after that.

This style injector is not held in by threads but with the hold down bracket. I blow mine off with compressed air then soak overnight in penetrating oil before trying to remove. After removing nuts on the side of hold down bracket and fuel screw on top, use a 17mm open end on top part of injector wiggling sideways back and forth while pulling out with pliers or hand. This should work however as last resort you can throw a heavy cloth or something similar over it and turn the engine over and let the compression blow it out. It can come out with force this way so don’t stand in the line of fire. Also watch out for the washer at bottom of injector. Most of the time they will stay in bottom of injector hole but can stick to bottom of injector when removing and fall off later
