First, do not drop in your Specimens and roll them around together, second, use baking soda to neutralize the acid before rinsing them. Finally, use a stiff toothbrush and toothpaste or Barkeepers Friend to scrub them. Be careful with the acid as it has bad, harmful fumes and will burn skin if prolonged exposure. Also, do in a ventilated area as the fumes will affect other objects in the area, especially metal.

brilliant video, i got some bead strands , kept them in a box and totally forgotten abt them, one day i was opening the box and there was a pyrite atrocity in there, literally mini stalactites and powdery veins grew from the beads... i could clearly see cracks in many of the beads already but some looked coated but unharmed , others were deteriorated into fragments.. shall i use hydrochloric acide to clean them up or would u recommend a dry clean first?

There is nothing worse than discovering this, it's awful. I would go straight into the acid and leave it there a couple of days, rinse and repeat. Once it's thoroughly dried out it might be worth rubbing a light coat of oil on the surface to stop any further moisture getting to it for a bit. Hopefully you can salvage it or at least as much as possible. Some pieces are unaffected despite being in close contact with the white doom powder, depends on the purity possibly. Many thanks for your comment, best wishes and my sincere condolences on your Pyrites self demise 😖

have you tried out Oxalic acid for cleaning? ive read a lot about it being very good for removing iron staining, i keep getting the branded stuff called 'Iron out' recommended but we don't have access to it in the UK, others have said brake disk cleaner but i've managed to find somewhere that sells pure Oxalic acid and will deliver to the UK, also with Pyrite if you were to break a piece on half would the inside be gold like the typical Pyrite on the market? i don't plan on breaking anything open i was just curious! 👍🏻

I've just bought a good size chunk on ebay, I never knew moisture destroys them, if I put a clear coat of varnish on it, would that help?

Possibly if your piece is good and dry before you apply. Alternatively you can apply a layer of oil, I use olive oil or almond oil and top it up from time to time

@theyorkshirecrystalhunter5462

I hope so, the purer the pyrite the shinier, especially if they are a nodule that is a single crystal growth. Just remember to keep them dry or oiled afterwards to preserve them
