Good vid! I might be crazy but I use a stiff bristle brush some gentle dish soap, wet them down in the sink give them a light scrub getting them completely soaked. Then I tie up 5 towels in knots & throw my boots & the towels into a front load washer. Delicate cycle, w/ mild soap & little vinegar/baking soda. Then either boot dryer or laid out to air dry. Then i load them up with oils/waxed. It fully removes any nasty smells! That was why I took this route bc the outside is easier to clean, but the smell on the inside!?! nopeeee! The few times I have gone about this everything has worked out fantastic! Though mine are only 6” so they can’t deform much. I’ve been using Ballistol, but I would like to add a good beeswax or something of the sort.

That is a serious process. I have never heard of anyone doing something like that. I hope they hold up for you. I never have had an odor problem with my boots.

I just got two different kinds of Frye cowboy boots for an amazing price but the previous owner hardly did anything to them. (they maybe used them a handful of times) As a result, they are incredibly dry. My goal is to get them looking brand new. I've been using leather conditioning but should I also use something like the bear grease? If not then what? Personally, I want to stay away from waxes for the time being until they drink up what they've been missing. They definitely need some kind of oil. What do you recommend? Also, I live in Minnesota, what snow/rain protector do you recommend for people who measure snow in feet not inches? Any help would be great, thanks.

I would use neatsfoot oil to restore the leather first. Then use the bear grease after to protect.

Bickmore makes excellent products that will not darken the leather.

All the professional boot cleaners that use saddle soap get it really bubbly, they put it on and get it off asap. I've never seen anyone work the saddle soap into the leather.

Most saddle soap instructions specifically say "Do not bring to a lather."

@@nsmturbo5902 The only way I've ever used Saddle Soap is to rub it in. I too have just seen them make it into lather.

There is no specific oil for a type of boot. I do recommend the products I talked about in the video for any boots.

I think the stiff brush scratches the leather and Opening up the pours like you said, I think, leaves the leather vulnerable to penetration of contaminates.Leather treatment I think is very important but I don't think is enough when shoe leather is rough.

I don't think it is as rough as you are thinking. Especially since that medium bristled brush actually brings the leather to a shine.

So, what do u think of Mink Oil? When I was growing up, in the '60s and 70s, we used it to condition and waterproof all our leather, including saddles and tack. Is that comparable to Bear Grease?

Thank you. I like mink oil but don’t use it much. My dad used it a lot in the 70’s but switched to bear grease.

Mink oil has some silicone and lanolin in it. I think the bear grease is a little more pure.

@@CountryLivingExperience The stuff I just bought, Angelus Genuine Mink Oil, says "Does not contain Silicone"... but I'm not sure about lanolin. Isn't that a cleaner... like in Saddle Soap? I have some Kiwi saddle soap, with lanolin in it?

I have never had a problem with absorption. There is hardly any soap left on them.

I don’t want to be a troll, but saddle soap is just that - soap for cleaning. It’s not a detergent, soap and detergent are two different things. And yes, it is meant to be worked into a “lather” read the can. It’s not gonna clean your boots if you just grind sand, grit, etc. into the leather with it, that will just scrape and rub the fibers with every step. Saddle Soap is just a mild soap with extra fats & oils (mostly vegetable) to clean leather without drying it out too much. Been around over a 100 years. It is wise though, as you pointed out to replenish the leather after cleaning, and Bear Grease is a good choice. I used it for years.

No worries you are not trolling. I appreciate the comment but I think you may have misunderstood me. I do always brush my boots to remove heavy particles before using anything on them including the saddle soap. My tin of Bickmore saddle soap says exclusively right on the label..."do not work into a lather".....so.... I have also heard this in leather goods forums.

Thanks for your reply. The internet is full of people like me who use Feibings, Angelos, and Kiwi; all using the sudsy lather. It’s also filled with people who rub it in with as little water as possible - both sides swear the other is wrong. Probably both work so long as you a reputable product. One big caveat, us latherers immediately wipe it off with a soft cloth. Even though it has extra moisturizers like lanolin, bees wax, and mystery oils, it’s not enough. It has to be followed up (after drying) with some kind of brand name moisturizer. For waterproofing nothing is better than Obenoffs LP. That’s great for your hunting boots, but not everyone needs that much bees wax. And it will significantly darken your leather. Pecards Heavy Duty would come in second. If you’re worried about the color; Chamberlains No. 1, Bick 4 are great choices. For even more delicate leather like purses, handbags, etc, Caddilac lotion is excellent. Personally I would avoid anything with petroleum products, silicone, mink oil, neatsfoot oil; there are just better choices out there. You did do a great job of emphasizing the importance of brushing with a good horsehair brush. Great job. So many people skip this important step. You also did a great job of emphasizing that you should clean and replace lost oils often. Buy the best boots you can afford and then take care of them, they’ll last for many, many years. If you shovel concrete down a chute for a living, thick rubber is probably a better choice. As you can tell, I’m a little obsessed with boot care. I love leather. Holsters, knives, scabbards, I’m always putting some potion on them. But don’t ask me about jackets, car seats, and spray painted leather. I have no clue. All in all, I want to compliment you on the video. You did a great job of educating the internet. Please excuse typos it’s 5am.

The name Bear grease, is kind of funny. It reminds me of bearing grease. There is a swedish equivalent product called "Viking Fiskarsmorning". It is all made out of mineral oil and waxes thereof.

I'm curious, how many pairs of cowboy boots do you currently own? :) And how many pairs of cowboy boots have you ever owned and worn? If you can't track down the number of pairs that you have owned or worn, can you at least make an approximation of the number of pairs? I LOVE cowboy boots! Wish we would be able to see some more cowboy boot videos of you! :)

Well if you'll have the free time to make some more videos regarding your cowboy boots and about cowboy boots in general, I would be happy to defer some of my suggestions. :) Well first and foremost, you can make three or more videos regarding your cowboy boots and about cowboy boots in general. :) Yeah you can make at least three! That would be a good idea. :) You can make three videos, one for each of your pair. :) You can narrate the story of how and where you got them, the date of when you first got each pair, about how often you wear each of them and you can also discuss about where you would always wear each of them. You can also discuss the reason why you bought them too. :) I think that would be a good idea. You can make three separate videos, yeah one for each of your pair. :) I'll keep an eye on to your channel, I'll post some more of my comments and suggestions too!
