Yes I have heard that, but with the tin foil, you really do not need to do much. Just peal off and recover. There will be a couple spots that need attention but not many. The last think you want is the grease mixing with the char from the pellets. That will be a night mare to clean. Thanks for watching and enjoy. They are so much fun.

You are welcome, it was a job that I loved for sure. Funny that I just saw this comment as I just put a brisket on the smoker. Should be hitting the stall about midnight. I smoke at the smoke or lowest setting until it reaches the smoker temp, meaning my smokers smoke setting is about 150, so I do that until the meat reaches that point, then turn to 200. Once it hits the stall, I wrap it up in tin foil, put beef brother in the bottom, keeping the nice bark on top and smoke till it hits 210. I am thinking that will be about 3 am. There are ways to do it faster, I just like a slow smoke. Anyway, I appreciate you watching and for taking the time to comment. Have a wonderful week!

The aluminum foil seems like a good idea. I was talking to one of the men at the Pit Boss company and I said that putting aluminum foil sounds like a good idea. Now this was before I saw your video. He said do not use foil as it will cause a grease fire. I figured if if you don't have the foil packed in real good so the grease will run off that could happen. Thanks for this video.

Really anything can cause a grease fire. When putting a lining on the cook tops and heat dis-purser, it is thin and pushed down. I want to ensure that any great gets to move down that can. There is no place that I have that would catch on fire and if there was it would not be there for long. Good ideas!!

Awesome. There is so much you can do with it. Go to my channel and look in the cooking play list. I have made pot pie, brisket, steaks etc. Thinking about doing a turkey for Thanksgiving. You will love it, just have to take care of it. Being from East Texas you understand the humidity. If you use the foil, make sure to rub a little cooking oil on it first. I would actually recommend cooking on it a couple of times and getting a nice layer of grease on it before using the foil. Just stops some of the rust. If you can do a nice brisket on it without foil you will be good for a long time. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I am in Houston and was told to take the pellets out of the augur if you don't use the grill very often. I always take them out after each cooking and run them out of the auger tube. My grill is a Pit Bos 1150 Version 3. My version has a touch display which will let you prime the augur to start cooking. When you finish I can remove my burn pot from the bottom, place a metal bucket under it and run the pellets out that way.
@AsleepAtTheReel
@AsleepAtTheReel 6 ай бұрын
Yes Sir that is one way to do it. I am just North of you in Tyler so I deal with the same humidity. I do it a little different but the same result. When I am finished cooking, I turn it up to 500, open the feed tray and move any extras to make bucket. Then anything left get pushed down the auger and it will turn off once there are no more pellets left for the auger to move.

Thank you for the video. Only thing I want to point out is the lower thin metal shield that goes over the 4 pins by the fire pot. It was put in upside down and also needs spun 180 degree's. The cut out on the one end should fit over the the auger tube and the rounded parts of that shield should be touching the bottom of the barrel. Just wanted to point that just in case no one else has.

That is a good idea but I cannot do that because of the drainage. That thing fills up and if it did not, my porch would fill up. What I am wanting to do is dig the grass up in front to be even, or slightly downhill, then put rock in there and an outdoor kitchen!!! The other problem with a flower bed is that I have to weed. ha ha. I have a flower bed around the entire house and I cannot keep up with it. Again, thanks for watching my friend.

One of us is putting the ash tray and heat deflector in backward. Mine came from Lowes with the ash tray flipped round side down. The big square cut goes over the pellet auger on the left side. Then the slits in the heat heat deflector fit over the bracket on the left side of the grill. That keeps the heat deflector in place and tilted toward the drain bucket on the right side of the grill.

Right, the heat defuser/ashtray is upside down & backward, & the broiler plate is in backward, there are tabs on the hopper end those slots in the broiler plate hook into. And you should not cover the broiler plate with foil, that is a fire hazard on its own.

@@kathyorock751 yeah once I saw that I was like no wonder it’s catching fire. Plies the aluminum foil will not let liquid drain properly because of the wrinkles in the foil plus he didn’t even have it angled correctly 🤦🏽‍♂️. What I do is only lay a small piece of foil under the piece of meat I’m cooking. I never cover the whole plate with foil especially the sear cover.

It ended up frying the control board and warping a tray. Need to keep them clean. Now, with that said, if you are cooking low temps you can get away with not cleaning it as often but if doing steaks on a high temp, that is when the majority of fires start! @AsleepAtTheReel
@AsleepAtTheReel 2 жыл бұрын
If I am understanding you correctly you are saying the piece that is wrapped in foil? If so, one thing I have started doing since this video is rubbing a little cooking oil on it and heating the grill up after a cleaning. Where I live, there is a lot of humidity and moisture can and will get everywhere. So I essentially get a protective layer on it. Once cooled down I put the foil back on for the next cook. Now, I usually do not clean or change the foil until I have a long cook again and there are a lot of drippings. For a brisket I cook it low and slow to start with, for example I will cook it on the smoke setting which is only about 150 degrees I think for about 5 hours. Then I bump to 200 degrees until I hit the stall, then wrap in foil and bump to 300. It usually takes me about 13 hours to do a brisket. So before every long cut I change the foil out and most importantly vacuum out the bowl. If that gets to full the burn will not continue and that has happened to me. If I am using it as a grill I will not change it very often, so that is a tough question. Some people change it every time, I however might do 10 small cooks on it, like steaks or burgers on it about 10 times, then it is time for a long cook and it is change time. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching.

Depends on where you live, and I mean that by humidity. If there is a lot of humidity I would do a very light coat of cooking oil on the bottom. If a dry climate, skip to the next step. Second put everything back together and put a coat of oil on it and run it hot for about 30 minutes. Basically just get it seasoned so it will not rust. If you are in a dry climate don’t do anything to the bottom just make sure it is dry. It should all work out fine.

Yes. Any degreaser will work. You don’t want to take all grease off though, well depending on where you live. I live where there is a lot of humidity so to keep from rusting I will do a cook without the foil once and a while. I just did a brisket for 12 hours without the foil. You can clean it anyway you want, but what I do is scrape everything off, then I have a propane torch and will just burn everything off, let it cool then coat with foil, that way I keep some grease on. We have about 80-90% humidity here. Hope that helps answer your question. Good luck out there and happy cooking.

One thing I would do before putting the foil down is get a nice layer of cooking oil or seasoning for a griddle the turn the cooker on high for a little. You do want some grease on it to protect it from rust. I use foil but once in a while I cook without it just to rebuild that layer. In the area I am in rust is worse than a thief. Hope that helps.

do you cut the slits back in the foil that you covered up or do you leave them covered?
@AsleepAtTheReel
@AsleepAtTheReel 2 жыл бұрын
It really does not matter. Foil will burn under a direct flame so if you do not cut it and you go really hot the slits will burn out. I have done it both ways as a test. Low heat, like 300 they will burn out but take a while. I would go ahead and cut them out to be safe. If you know you are doing steak for instance, you are good, that will burn but a long slow brisket will take some time, so just cut them out! Thanks for watching and for the question.

However, I have a question: how is the grease ending up in the bottom of the Pit Boss instead of draining out the grease channels on the sides? I am asking because I am looking at buying a Pit Boss after owning a Traeger. With my Traeger I have never ended up with grease in the bottom albeit that the deflector pan for Traeger is designed differently.

Thanks for the message and watching. The answer to the questions is a little embarrassing, but I will tell you anyway! 😀 When I put the deflector in the time before I cleaned it out on video I put it in backwards. There is one side that fits into slots and allows that side to sit up a little higher and at the right angle. Once I put the tin foil on it, I did not check to make sure I had the right side, so it was in backwards. Add to that, I did several brisket cooks on it, so the grease pooled in the tin foil where I did not flatten it, plus it did not drain, so it would dry then add to it. Long story short I installed the wrong thing backwards. So minus the grease in the bottom where it should not be the cleaning proceedure is the the same, I just did not want to say on camera that I installed it backwards. Now, when I do the tin foil, I simply poke a couple small holes in the slotted side so I know which side goes where. It drains into my bucket when installed correctly. Sorry for the confusion, not trying to hid information just my mistake! 😂🤘

Basically you don’t want a lot of grease buildup. Brisket is long and slow but if you spend a bunch of time cooking that, then a week later you have to go to a high temp you run the risk of catching it on fire. Just don’t want a huge build up of grease.

I'm looking at a Pit Boss. How often do you grill and how often do you clean?
@AsleepAtTheReel
@AsleepAtTheReel 2 жыл бұрын
I grill quite often. The main key it to keep if nothing else, the fire bowl clean. As the pellets are pushed in and burn they leave ash. That ask will build up and the fire will eventually not burn as the pellets are pushed under the ash. When just cooking chicken, hamburgers steak stuff like that, meaning short cooks I will go a while before cleaning. Before a brisket or a long cook I clean it out before hand. My brisket cook is about 10 hours, so that is 10 hours of pellets being pushed in. BTW I cook low and slow, meaning at 200 for a few hours, then 250 until it reaches the stall which is about 170 degrees. I want to get a good smoke ring on it. After that I wrap it in foil and increase the heat, but that is why it is so long. Anyway back to your question, if nothing else clean the bowl, heat will take care of the rest! Hope that answers your question and if not, ask away! Thanks for watching and good luck on your decision. Honestly this is the best cooking tool I have ever gotten!

There should be no grease in the bottom of your grill like that you should leave the tinfoil off that’s your issue. I stopped using tinfoil on mine because of a grease fire it caused and it’s not that much harder to clean. I noticed the food taste better now and it is seasoned also..

@AsleepAtTheReel
@AsleepAtTheReel 2 жыл бұрын
I do not know exactly. Did you vacuum out the fire pot? If you did, did you put some chips in or did you take some time to prime it? Depending on your vacuum pressure and the angle it is very possible that you sucked a good portion out of the auger which means it will take some time to get a steady flow back in. It is programmed to put a certain amount in the fire pot, then light it and slowly add pellets on a time delay and if the auger was empty that would explain it. Might try priming the auger (just letting it run) until you see some pellets come out. See if that fixes your problem.

@@AsleepAtTheReel I appreciate your response . I am pretty OCD with things so I went and purchased a pit boss the other day.. @AsleepAtTheReel
@AsleepAtTheReel 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomaswilson2137 That actually is a good question and not sure why it is not covered. It depends on what I am doing but if doing steaks, I have the vents open. That will allow me to get a sear on them. I cook them just off to the side, but allow a minute or so for each to be above the vent to get that sear like I would on coal. For brisket I keep it closed, forcing the smoke and heat to disperse and not come right up the middle. Also if I can help it, I place everything on the left side of the grill. That bottom plate is angled a little to allow for draining of the grease causing smoke and heat to travel to that side first. Sometimes you just cannot help what side you cook on because there is just too much stuff. When that happens I rotate the meats if I see one is cooking faster. Thanks for posting.

I run it hot to burn anything that will be burned. The rest of the burned stuff is not foil but drippings. The only foil that will burn is that exposed to a direct flame. And that is done to start. When smoking meat I rarely go over 300 degrees mostly 150-250 so not if there were anything left to burn it would not. Thanks for the comment.
