I had the lid to an old aluminum lid to a soup pot that was my Mother's back in the 1970's....she obviously put it in the dishwasher many times, as I did too...not realizing it was getting more stained and discolored each time. I was on the verge of throwing out the pot and lid until I saw your video....I looked under the sink cabinet and 1 Brillo pad in the box and some Barkeepers Friend....I scrubbed it up and it's almost like new....I need to get some more Brillo pads to finish the job, but it's amazing how nice it looks...and it wasn't a lot of effort either. I know I'm just a sentimental old fool, but I just hate throwing out something that my Mom used for so many years and has so many memories....she made lots of split pea soup in that pot....and maybe I'll make some tomorrow for old times sake!!! Thank you for your video and helping me restore an old pot and an old memory :)

Your story warms my heart. It must feel great to continue to use an item with such wonderful memories, and I am happy that I help in some way to lengthen the life of it!

Sentiment and memories are what gives life to the day. Never apologize for that.

It’s actually a bad idea to cook in aluminium pot, as aluminium can leak into your food. And aluminium pots should never be put in dishwasher.

I did see the second video and went with that instead. It worked very well. Thank you for the warning about good ventilation!

This is an excellent video. Thanks, I'm trying to restore my bialetti. I'd like to say that if I were still teaching science, THIS is an excellent example to students of how to use the scientific method. You have a control, you have a test method and control the time, etc. Great job. I will try the bar keeper's friend. Thanks so much!

Hi, is your bialetti ok now? I run into the same issue. Thank you!

Thank you so much for making a nearly scientific evaluation, including a control sample. As for the scratching form the Brillo pad, replace it with a very fine steel wool and use that with Bar Keeper's Friend. I suspect that will give you the best results with the least effort. BKF already contains an abrasive (feldspar), but not much of it, so that is why I suggest using a fine steel wool as your main abrasive.

Thank you Regit for your comment! My high school chemistry teacher would be proud on the control sample. I will try out the steel wool when I have a chance to get it.

Thank you for a well-done comparison without the introductory chat! I have BKF.

Good to know. I did not know aluminum should not be placed in a dishwasher.

Thank you for doing this video. I have a couple cake pans that are stained that I want to clean up. Unfortunately, there’s not much info out there as to what actually works. I’ve tried cream of tartar and vinegar, but it didn’t work. I’ll try Bar Keeper next. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Redd, when using the BKF, the little the water you use, the better. So aim to have the consistence like that of tooth paste. It will make it much easier. Also check out my part 2 video to see whether it works for you.

This was very helpful. Thank you. I'm off to buy some Barkeeper's Friend.

Best result through scrubbing is lots of BKF w/ a little bit of water. For non scrubbing lazy method, check out part 2 video.

I don't know what I would have done without your info. An older couple who are neighbor's brought us dinner over.. I washed their pan without thinking and ruined it. I was so panicked for days until I ran into your video. Got some bar keepers friend,as you suggested and now everything back to greatness Don't know what I would have done without you. ♡

I've never heard of Bar Keepers Friend but I'm buying some tomorrow! I ruined one of my favorite cake pans in the dishwasher and was looking for another one exactly like it. I found a used one on eBay and after I purchased it I decided to figure out what I could do with my original pan and found this. I'm buying Bar Keepers Friend tomorrow! Thank you!

Were you able to save the cake pans?
@Karen822 Жыл бұрын
It did help, but I hate the scrubbing. I'd rather just buy a new pan.

I had a black grease/residue coming off a metal attachment to a mixer after going in the dishwasher, would these solve that issue also and make it safe to use again?
@travelingtrex48973 жыл бұрын
Saira, I have heard many had similar experience as you. Try Barkeepers Friends - hand scrub, see if that fix the issue. If not, try my part 2 video and see if that works. Let me know how it turns out!

What about vinegar or citric acid, would you consider? I have those on hand and a pot that has this same damage.
@travelingtrex48976 жыл бұрын
Ava Maria , vinegar doesn't work from my experience. I vaguely remember citrus acid work, can't be sure.
@regitmail6 жыл бұрын
Go with citric acid. BKF is also acidic, using oxalic acid.

Is there any way of restoring a Picquot Ware Magnailium teapot that has been put in dishwasher - would he same advise apply?
@travelingtrex48973 жыл бұрын
Lorna, I heard that Magnailium is an aluminum alloy. If I were you, I would try BKF at the bottom of the ware and see if that works. No guarantee though. Let us know how it goes.

Top ones are best, no scratches, the scratching is what cleaned the bottom ones
