I am a lead technician in restoration I have always used these a certain way to get the best result. The correct way is to push hard enough to the point the eraser is dissolved. The soot will rub off with the chunks of eraser. You will then want to use a mild degreaser to get the remaining soot off the wall. When finished you should clean your Wall or ceiling with a deodorizer

I'm going to try this! My daughter wants her room painted and is SO frustrated that she cannot get the soot off of her walls (she has a small bedroom and burns candles.) We've tried TSP, various cleaners, etc...

I've painted directly on top of severely soot damage walls many times. No cleaning whatsoever. I used an airless sprayer to apply the paint then back rolled with a 1/2" nap 12" roller. I also used Sherwinn Williams top of the line paint and primer in one. Results were amazing and worth the little extra for the better quality paint. It's now 5 years later and it still looks like new. I know it sounds crazy, but worked great without having to scrub. If you don't have a sprayer, just roll it on. First coat will seal it in, second coat will give you a perfect finish. I used regular latex, not oil base

@@vanman4287 We finished my daughter's bedroom, and it looks great! We used Sherwin William's Major Blue, two coats plus any touch ups necessary. All that worry for nothing. :)
