Years ago having my cleaning company I did a couple small fire jobs for Sears They came good but I was always worried about the smoke odor problem , when I worked for several contractors doing fire jobs some would remove all drywall and insulation seal the studs and ozone , others recently would just seal the walls with shellac and paint of course clean vents and A/C after the completion I could still smell the smoke I would not accept the job if it was my house . I know it depends on the fire and damage but it seems a high risk if the homeowner complains and it has to be redone , Whew !

From what I’ve learned Over the years in the restoration industry . Typically , per standard… you Never want to use a wet wash method on flat paint surfaces like ceilings or walls (drywall) as this can smear and embed the soot particles into the material. Instead the Recommended method is to dry chem sponge the surface after Hepa vaccuming the loose soot particles.

Yes that is correct in some cases. But the majority of the time this wet clean method is the best most efficient method to use.

How do you clean soot from a popcoen ceiling
@FirehouseEducation

The only thing you can do with a popcorn ceiling is HEPA vacuum and then seal and paint. But before you do anything you should have it tested for asbestos.

Is it recommended to use Kilt paint to paint over and encase the smoke on the wall. Then paint a second coat.

Possibly it just depends on the degree and severity of the fire and wether or not you can get the odor out of the structure without painting.

this appears to be really light soot, would this method work on a heavier smoke damage or would you chem sponge it first?

I do not chem sponge walls unless it is wall paper or unfinished wood. This method works on most light to medium fires using wall wash. If it is bad enough that you need to use De-Greaseall then you need to use white cotton cloths and circular cleaning method.

FirehouseEducation Can I ask why you do it this way, Ive been on many fires for a large restoration company as a subcontractor and they call for chem sponging the walls before they seal coat and then paint them. This is very labor intensive to go over the wall 3x with a sponge and thats why ive been looking for a better method. What would be your method for a heavy fire? Often they remove half the walls to get inside of them and clean other half in a heavy smoke damage. Thank you!!

Do y'all use the chem sponge first before cleaning? Do you always clean the ceiling's?
@FirehouseEducation
@FirehouseEducation 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we almost always clean the ceiling. I usually find that if the walls need cleaning then so does the ceiling but it depends on the severity and conditions of the fire. I do not chem sponge the walls. Its a waste of time if I am going to wet clean them anyway.

@@shannonwaege2055 With soot that heavy you should be using white cotton cloths and degrease all and then painting. Do not use chem sponges on this as it is a waste of time.
