Let's set the scene...
You've had a wonderful weekend out riding, making memories, and getting dirty on your electric bike. You come home unpack, unwind, and remember you now have an ELECTRIC bike you need to wash! Well this can't be good, I mean every time someone has plopped their phone in the pool, tested their tablet under the tap , or swam laps with their laptop, they inevitably cop a car ride to Costco for a ridiculous receptacle of rice.
So how on earth do you go about washing your electric bike?
To answer that question you have to understand what causes the temperamental relationship between electronics and water. You see the most common type of damage from water is a short circuit. This is when water gets into electronic componentry while electricity is flowing through it. The second type of water damage is comes from prolonged exposure to water i.e. water does not leave the electronic component and begins to corrode all the metal, weakening connections, and eventually killing whatever has been so unfortunate to suffer this fate.
The second type we can avoid by letting the bike dry thoroughly and storing our Ebikes where it is dry. As for the first, and most common type of damage, it is very easy to avoid. All electronics, when boiled down, are simply bits of metal and plastic with current flowing through them. A short circuit cannot occur between two connectors if there is no current. So here comes our solution. Remove the battery, and allow 10-15 min to pass before beginning the washing process. This ensures that there is no electricity in any parts and nothing can be damaged from our short-term exposure to water.
See, simple!
After following along through the video just make sure you allow ample time for all the water to dry before reconnecting the battery to the bike. And DON'T wash the battery with water directly!
I follow this process anytime I have to wash my electric bike just to be safe.
If you like what I'm doing stick around for future videos, and show your friends how to wash their bikes. Let me know what bike you ride and where you ride it.
Have a good one!
