If your picture or audio is really lousy try cleaning your VCR components like the video head and audio head. Just use regular rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol. I would advise against using acetone as it may melt plastic components. Good luck and ALWAYS MAKE SURE IT'S UNPLUGGED!

Please do not use a cloth on the video head. Cloths have fibers which can catch on the head and might rip it out as you spin it. The correct way is take a small strip of copy paper and wet it with alcohol. Hold it against the Video drum and spin it counter clockwise. Do not put too much pressure against the head with your finger as you can damage it. Put enough pressure to make sure it makes contact with the head. Spin several times, check paper if its dirty get a clean sheet and repeat. Do this until the copy paper is clear.

Is there a way to remove the erase head? Or should you just make sure the tape itself has the tab removed?

It would be easier to disable the record button itself. Also, the erase head is only part of the recording process. The record heads would still write a signal to the tape... making it unwatchable.

Always used a small piece of chamoi leather (smooth side), less chance of getting fibres stuck in head mechanism from a cloth. Q-tips (cotton buds) and cloth for other parts absolutely way to go. Camera lens blower also useful ;) Isopropyl or any other alchohol cleaner for electrical components is fine. Pity we don't have more straight forward to-the-point videos like this anymore.

QUESTION: I cleaned the VCR heads similar to what is done in this video. I used paper and the 91% rubbing alcohol. The tapes played with improved video and audio. Everything seemed fine. But then I put the cover back on the VCR and the video problems and audio problems returned. I then cleaned the heads again. This time when I put the cover on the VCR the video problems no longer existed, but there was still a slight "static" hiss type of noise. This happens EVERY TIME. I have tried this over a dozen times and the moment I place the cover onto the VCR while a tape is playing, the static "hiss" starts to be there. What is causing this and how can it be corrected?
@kingshearer2

Have you tried adjusting the tracking? Try cleaning the audio head again with 99.9% alcohol . Sometimes the audio head is not perfectly aligned with the tape path and so the sound is not picked up perfectly. Also some tapes become damaged due to storage and wear.

Jenny the way I used to clean my vcr, was by taking a Q-tip dipping it and alcohol and lather it on the exposed VHS film. Afterwards... Put the tape in the VCR and let it play for like 30 seconds, on the part that you cleaned with the alcohol. Like the guy said... Just clean the parts that come in contact with the tape. So why not just put alcohol on the film itself cuz it will come in contact with the VCR.

There's a lot of conflicting information out there about this specific issue. You said Texwipes, which is new. I have actual chamois leather, printer paper, microfiber cloth for reading glasses, and Kimwipes. Alongside 99% alcohol. Some have said to not use anything paper. Others advocate for it.
