In this episode of The Lombok Life, I give you an in-depth look at how to climb Mount Rinjani. At 3726m, this is Indonesia's second tallest volcano and it is no joke! In 2017 it was one of the hardest things I've ever done, so I wanted to test myself again. Also, in 2018 the volcano was rocked by the Lombok earthquakes so I was intrigued to meet up with old friends and see how things have changed...
This episode is split into two parts with this first part focusing on our first day of climbing up from Sembalun to the crater rim. I hope this gives you a really good idea of what it's like to climb Mount Rinjani. Enjoy!

I climbed Mt Rinjani 27years ago and your video had me smiling from ear to ear all over again. The only thing that's changed is that I was the only tent and it was blowing a gale that night!! Seeing the Gili isles was magnificent as well as seeing the clouds rolling in and out over the volcanic crater. I'm sure your memories of Rinjani will stay fresh in your memories for many years to come. Lovely to see you guys getting out there and enjoying life!😍😍

That makes me smile from ear to ear reading your comment, cheers Chris! Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and am glad you enjoyed it :) it's an incredible place isn't it? You're spot on - it's something I can't forget anytime soon. Once you forget about the pain and effort of climbing up, you even start thinking about doing it again...

@@JoshEdwardsFilms The village you were in, (Sanmaru?) was really basic back then. The children were happy and full of innocence. Gillette had just bought out that gel that came out of the aerosol can, blue in colour, but turned white as you rubbed it between your fingers... Of course, the whole kid population wanted to try it!!! Hahaha.... Such fun! I shaved only with water and no gel from then on! Totally worth it! Our shower was a terracotta urn on a wall with a cork in the bottom.

That's lovely to hear mate, thank you very much! I'm my own worst critic but I do feel happy with this one :) it's a good marker for where I want my style and storytelling to be. Great to hear that you enjoyed - I appreciate you taking the time to watch 🙏 And yeah haha I know exactly what you mean, it ain't easy. I used to be guilty of the same thing. But I remind myself now that just because I'm struggling and don't feel like recording...that's not a good enough excuse. The audience still want to see what's happening and they want to experience that struggle. The highs are only highs if you share the lows too. Got part 2 exporting right now, all good to go for Friday I think 😁

MAAAATTEEEEE! Missed your videos, but always worth the wait! It's been hard to imagine international travel these days, but Lombok is one of the places that will always have a place in my heart. We saw the waterfalls around Rinjani when last there early 2018 and admittedly we cheated on the climb back down and took advantage of a ride on the back of a motorbike. Trust me when I say that was an adventure in itself lol. On perhaps a more philosophical angle, you could say your passion for climbing mountains has a deeper meaning of overcoming the obstacles in life and pushing ourselves to reach those goals. At least that's the inspiration I took away from this one. Those night photos were simply magical, and the drone footage breath taking as usual! Well done to you both, can not wait for part two!
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Emmy 😁🤙🏼 always appreciate you taking the time to watch. And yeah I guess that's been part of the idea this year - bringing a bit of international travel to everyone's living rooms. I do hope we can all be moving around again soon. I'm slowly working out a way I can produce these videos more often...hopefully not so long between uploads. Slow process but I think I'm figuring it! I can imagine the motorbike being quite a fun adventure yeah, was definitely tempted to try it myself haha 😂 and I think you're right you know. It is a lot about that - a physical representation of how I like to challenge and push myself. I hadn't thought about it like that but I think it's spot on! Glad that it inspired :) I'm looking forward to uploading part two - just got a day or two more of editing to do and then it'll be there!

@@JoshEdwardsFilms I am just waiting to get my second vaccine due mid October. Still a little away from any international travel for us sadly, but thank you so much for reigniting my passion for travel. I had honestly put any idea of travel in a box in the back of my mind for the last two years, so even if its just in my living room still for now, its so nice to see the world again. Admittedly, there were times while I was watching Part 2 that I wondered where the nearest mountain I could climb here in Victoria is, now that we are slowly coming out of lockdowns.
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms 2 жыл бұрын
@@emmygeddon4215 I'm buzzing to hear that. Great that you'll be getting your 2nd vaccine soon - here's hoping that Aus will start to open up again. You guys have had it very tough over there with all these lockdowns. However, that being said, the pandemic can certainly change how we think about travel and our home country. There are so many awesome places in Victoria! I'm not sure how far and freely you can move just yet but two of my favourite places on earth are in Vic. Wilsons Prom is a very special omace and you can do a multi day hike around there. And there's also the Victorian Alps north of places like Dargo and Licola. Plenty of mountains up there if you fancy it 👍🏼

@@JoshEdwardsFilms you're welcome 🙏 There are so much things to do and to learn more about Indonesia. Indonesia have 34 provinces from west to east with its own uniquely diverse population, race, ethnic, traditional in customs, houses, music instruments, dances , food, regions and it's has their own history in every island in indonesia. from one island to another island you will find many different types of people around Indonesia that comes from different provinces and they meet with other Indonesia people that come from java island or sumatera island or kalimantan or Sulawesi or Maluku or NTT or NTB or Bali or Papua, they will speaks in their own tongues in different dialects of language that comes from their original homeland. each of them will not understand each other if they used their own mother tongue to speak. the only way that make them understand each other are speak in bahasa Indonesia.

Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful :) appreciate you taking the time to watch. For water, maybe drinking 3 or 4 litres a day max. It can be really hot up there and you need to stay hydrated. If you are with porters and a guide, they will carry extra water and be able to refill with water purification tablets 👍 hope this helps you

@@JoshEdwardsFilms Ic, you've done many great videos with great storytelling. Don't go home just yet, seriously, you don't miss a lot, go travel around the different islands. Have you ever thought to make a documentary and get BBC/ITV/Channel 4 to fund you? Your videos look as decent as Ben Fogle/Bear Grylls ones, some even better, few of theirs are a bit shite at times. I still have a lot to learn and can really improve which is exciting. Let's see where I am in 5 years! And yeah you're right. I plan to be out here for a fair while and after this Lombok Life series is finished (probs around the end of the year), I plan to make some similar videos focusing on other islands. There's so much to explore here...you could spend your whole life travelling around the archipelago and still not see it all 😂 so I shall do what I can And that's a great idea mate. No worries! That's why I made these two videos about climbing - to help people out :) thanks for taking the time to watch and glad to hear it's useful. If you've only just brought the drone I advise you to practice with it at least once or twice a week between now and November. Go to wide, open spaces and just get used to it. Nope, that's all established straight away! When you turn your drone on, it'll take a few moments to warm up and get it's coordinates via GPS. That was certainly not the aim of making this video 😂 you can continue to feel depressed and regret what you perceive as a wasted life, or you can get out there and do something about it :) It's important to remember that you shouldn't compare yourself with others via social media and KZfaq - it's a very flawed, dangerous thing and will make you feel bad. Every life is unique and beautiful. Remember that what we share online is only the "highlights reel" - the very best bits of our lives.
