Tip for y'all. If you go to Harbor Freight you can find the white and black powder coat in 16oz plastic bottles for $7.99 each, they work great. I use the heat gun method.

I’ve done this on a prior laser project and the results were outstanding. Especially one designs that contain a lot of detail.

There are also heat lamps for powder coating parts that aren't able to fit in the typical oven ... I'm sure that might work better then the heat gun

I think the heatgun result look better too. I recently tried both methods too. Melting with the laser seems to be somewhat inconsistent for me, some areas would stick really well, others flake off easy. It also leaves a bit of a line pattern. With the heat gun you can heat larger areas, make sure all the powder is melted and it leaves a smooth shiny texture. In my testing, I found I needed to mask the project regardless of the method used, because the powder gets trapped in the wood grain. Sanding it off was a no go for me, as the sander seems to melt and smear the rogue powder particles, smudging the whole face up. It's a rather messy process, but it did leave a really crisp and clean look if you mask, use the heatgun and don't sand afterwards. I'm still figuring out if the result is worth the hassle. You mentioned in your opening segment about doing powder coating on cutting boards. I am hoping not on the business side of the board.. I would think that putting that on the cutting side would cause it to chip off with use of knives and stuff and then going into food

Why not just mask the material, engrave and then paint it.

Masking works great on designs that don’t contain a lot of detail. But if you engrave something with lots of detail, removing the mask can be time consuming. But I agree with you and typical just mask my projects. But this approach does work really well.
