How To Compare Slate FG-Stress & UA Distressor Plugins

Comparing analog modeled plugins isn't always easy because developers may use differently calibrated converters during the modeling process, making the knob parameters on plugins disproportionate. Therefore, calibration and careful ear tuning must be used to ensure that the plugins are actually processing the audio in the same manner. Steven Slate explains the process and demonstrates what happens when the plugins are made equal.
*FG-Stress is a licensed emulation of the Empirical Labs Distressor which was created by the Slate Digital development team. It is not in any way affiliated with Universal Audio or their official Distressor software. The purpose of this video is to provide educational content on the topic of comparing two similar software products.

I just love the style, the honesty and sheer sense of humour that You bring to the table. I have both the full package from Slate and UAD. I use them all the time on all my mixes and boy do I love them both! Both companies lead the way (by far, in my opinion) into the future of audio production. I am looking forward to more videos!!

Your sense of humor earns you more respect from me, not that it matters, or was low to begin with. This is a great video and all of your points are excellent. I'm happy to subscribe to the everything bundle. Now I just have to control my urge to want more new plugins from you guys! TL;DRYou guys make amazing plugins and I love it.

I remember back when I was learning in sony acid pro and adobe audiotion. Now people are going to war over tiny itty bitty differences in plugins that no human being would ever care the slightest about in a mix, let alone some average listener. Think of how far plugins have come in regards to analog modeling and you realize how incredibly silly it is at this point to think one is going to give your mix some crazy magic thats going to totally make or break your mix.

Wish I could like this comment 10 times! I spent 1000s of dollars on plugins before coming to the painful realization that what I needed was to learn the tools I already had and master them. Now I use a lot of stock plugins and my mixes are fine.

You punk’d us on “that was the same file” & I love it! Lol! thanks for being a true leader Steven! Thanks for getting in the trenches & thanks for being real! It’s hard to compare 10 years ago when I had shity plugins to the ease of the everything bundle & how much it’s changed my life. I buy 2 subscriptions even though I only need one because I feel like I get more value then I’m paying! You really have brought a lot of joy in my life thank you! - Nate (I’m commenting on my wife’s account)

Great! Emulated my carefully and anally retentively set static OTB analog mixing behemoth rig ITB to a T so I can mix in my 'virtual studio' whilst on tour. Using this amazing plugin in heavy doses to replicate some of my hardware (it does DBX reeeeally well).. It was the puzzle piece I was missing.. The FG Stress made more noise than my outboard by a mile. (everything calibrated to a T). Had to gate it. The compression characteristics of the plug are jaw dropping, but to make it do certain things with low input high output you get the hiss. Much love. [Static analog mixing chains with analog volume automation (controlled by a DAW track) at the end is the future I swear!. I'm sure this is no secret. But it means zero recall. You mix into the rig with plugins, but the outboard settings never change. I have classic outboard chains for everything, kick, snare, bass, lead vox etc, many stereo compressor busses, effects with settings that never change . Classic chains with volume automation at the end, using the computer and plugins to mix into it like holding the tiller on a sail boat catching the wind... Is anyone doing this? I always hear of the pains and trials of having to recall analog which is true if you actually have to change the knobs.. .. . It sends everybody ITB which is a shame. I fly from session to session on a whim, all through the analog rig. There are no drawbacks. Haha sorry rant over..!!

Love this comparison. Makes me dig the Slate even more as it sounds the same(certainly as close as 2 hardware units), but the Slate version operates with zero latency, while the UA version on my Quad UAD card reports well over 1000 samples(so I can't track with the UA version).

Pretty close. It should be noted that the GR is showing 12 on UAD and 10 on the Slate for the downbeat of bar two. Surely a fair comparison would match these? The first one sounds a touch better to my ears, a little bigger and thicker. I wonder which one it is? Would be interesting to see the output meters on the channel or the master meters a bit bigger to compare levels. But there's a difference in timbre for sure. All that said I'd be happy using either :D

Judging by what I hear in this video, I'd say the first one is the UAD (see my comment below). Each have their virtues on different material but the Stress lacks a little down below compared to the hardware and, indeed the UAD can sound a touch accentuated in this respect.

The UAD Distressor has the same punch with the FG but FG doesn’t have the brightness to the mix UAD has that for some reason. I believe all hardware compressor components have a brightness to the punch kinda like an mid eq range raising the frequency to sound like it’s mastered.
