How To Compose: I wrote a jazz piece in this video

I challenged myself to compose a piece in front of a video camera so you could see what my process is like. Don't worry, I cut out the boring parts!
Throughout the process, I highlight the major decision making points of the piece - the chords, the groove, the melody, the form... I just didn't come up with a title.
Some of my tips for composing go like this:
1. SET YOUR GOALS! What keys, chords, rhythm, form, melody style, instruments, etcetera, do you want to use?
2. MAKE DECISIONS WITHOUT THINKING TOO MUCH.
3. BAD ideas are better than NO ideas! You can always change them.
The piece I wrote ended up using 2 different chord progressions in 2 keys, with a melody that had some large leaps, arpeggios, and use of the blues scale (although the chords are not bluesy).
I made a recording with drums, vibes, and keyboard bass (woohoo!) using Logic, but the entirety of the piece was written at the piano on the video. I hope you enjoy!

Oh my gosh this is literally so good! Thank you for walking through your process of making music. I compose music but one thing I don’t really know how to do is try to compose jazz. You’ve inspired me to try.

I'm obsessed with big band, and therefore feel a lot of jazz pieces should be big band. But you don't need to do it if you don't want to. It's just my personal feeling. Very nice work tho.

I would probably still follow more or less this type of process - composing melody and chords... then just arrange it for a big band after ;)

I just found this video, I’m going through a little hyper-fixation on Jazz comp right now lol, but just wanted to say I love the way this piece turned out, it sort of reminds me of a tune from the movie Monsters University, it’s called Gospel. 13:55

Great video Tim. By showing this process "live" and showing your strategies. I think the part about parameters is paramount. My #1 problem when composing is finding a starting point and then a clear identity. I just found your channel and subscribed. I think you're right up there with Aimee Nolte, Rick Beato, Jeff Schneider, Nahre Sol and others with your content. Keep up the great work.

I would suggest focus on what you are feeling before writing. Otherwise, it's just a technical exercise, not a song. A song shows vulnerability and gets an empathy response because it connects with people. Your best songs do that, as do all. I always wrote my songs about friends, lovers, family members, or experiences FIRST that moved me to write. The musical technique is actually secondary to that. That's why simple sounds good and almost always better. It resonates (like the Vibe) and it's honest. It connects.

This was very interesting. I personally do things differently. I record into a program, and when I get ideas, I record them right away, because my memory of my ideas is bad (but at least I have a lot of them). I have tried writing notes too, but the idea would change before I reached the end of it. Though there is something nice about writing notes. I wish I could read them better, parallel lines confuse me.

Here’s my question Tim, I find it hard to generate so many great chord progressions like u, is it bcuz my lack of knowledge of typical patterns? If wanna practice to construct may I borrow some of the progressions from the famous songs? Thank u so much if you could answer my Q.😊

Well, this video was filmed while I was visiting my family in the U.S. and I only had a Zoom H4 with me to record the vibes. Normally I use two overhead Cascade ribbon mics through the old Apogee Duet (still works somehow) into Logic. I'm by no means a sound engineer though. Also - feel free to contact me anytime through my website, I have a pretty good system for Skype lessons that also includes the overhead camera, recordings, etcetera. Thanks for watching!
