I did an experiment for a while which was insightful for me. I cropped my pictures only on fix aspect ratios 1:1, 2:3 or 4:5. It turned out most of my pictures worked best in 4:5, which has become my normal aspect ratio. It is rather seldom that 1:1 or 2:3 suits a picture best. But then it be so. 😊

Thanks! I use my digital camera most of the time to meter, depending on the situation I might go 1/2 or 1 full stop over the reading that the camera is giving me. When I don't have it or I'm using it to record a video, I use my phone (an app called myLightMeterPro).

Oye amigo! Love the SQ-Ai vids, super helpful for a Bronica rookie like me! About Algarve, here's a few recommendations; Tiny publitos like Alcantarilha, Péra, Guia etc are cute and original. In my opinion much better than the touristy Albufeira and Vilamoura. The most beautiful one is probably Loulé. Sagres is a must and if you get the chance go to see the wind turbines between Aljezur and Arrifana (somewhere).. Have a great trip!!

I believe, that image ratio choice for most people depends on 1) personal preference and 2) subject (in this order). For me, it’s the reverse, I chose the ratio based on the subject and even crop to more creative, irregular formats. The only thing is, that you have to adjust your format to the output medium sometimes, I make a second version, e.g. for Instagram. With regards to your Algarve trip: Well my Portuguese girlfriend said that it’s gonna rain in winter 😔 Nevertheless, I hope the best for you! Cheers!
@aows
@aows 5 жыл бұрын
Very true. In my case, square fits all my needs better than horizontal / vertical. But square images won't fit nicely next to other aspect ratios. They work pretty well on Instagram, though! About the Algarve, it's been sunny and warm so far! I wouldn't mind a bit of rain actually haha.

hi aows, i am inspired by your photo work and like the way you elaborate your shooting technique and storytelling, i recently also found my shooting style and is very passion to shoot amazing portrait, lifestyle and marco shot, i really learnt the importance of embracing the dark white grainess and shadows as well as composition. My first roll was not that good, as the developed film was underexposed or light leak only few turned out to be exposed properly, and starting to learn how camera capture light and how film react to dynamic range, but i have a question, is it possible to expose a shot properly without light meter, what is your way to work that out?
@aows
@aows 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Vincent! Glad to hear you've found your passion in portrait and lifestyle. I wish you the best! About the question, I don't think it's possible to get consistent good exposures without a light meter, unless you are in a studio where you have everything under your control. I use my digital camera to meter for my Bronica, since I always have it with me (to either record these videos or take photos with it). If I can't use it for any reason, then I use my phone. Hope this helps!

Question: not a criticism why do you shoot 400 when you get so much noise. Is the noise a feature that is liked ? Wouldn't 100 be a finer grain giving a smoother look to the image. I'm just trying to get a understanding in this 66 year old mind. Am I missing something ? Like your Chanel and have subscribed.
@aows
@aows 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Brian! I understand that grain is not for everyone. If you are photographing something where detail might be important, or even portraits, you might like fine grain or no grain at all. I like to make my images with a lot of empty space, or surfaces without much detail. Grain gives those areas texture, and I love it. I not only shoot 400 ASA film, I actually push it to 1600 or even 3200, to get more contrast... and more grain. I also add grain to my digital photos. I feel like it's very important to make the images I like to make. Hope this makes sense! Thanks, and welcome!
