I've always struggled with this. I like comedy magic and prefer jokes but I ended up getting better and better at ad-lib. However this was a much needed video for me, thanks!

I integrate the Universal monsters into my show any time I think I can get away with it. I love those classics almost as much as I love magic

I always stay away from magic props that look like magic props. Would you recommend printing symbols on cards or would you rather write them yourself with a sharpie? (Like the 25 geometrical design cards you find in Corinda p.325) I think I would write them to make it look impromptu. I would buy blank playing cards from both sides and write on them with a sharpie. Index cards dont work because they dont spread nice. The Spirit Cabinet you got is just beautiful. If you dont like to talk about the spirit world you can always talk about ''Anna Eva Fay'' and the things she did out of her perspective. This approach I like to use when my character dosent allow me to claim certain things. Presentation really is everything. Have a nice day.

I've done both Alexander. I have made up cards with symbols and images preprinted, and I have drawn my own. For me, it depends on context and purpose. Handwritten cards lend themselves to a more impromptu feel, but printed cards are easy to see and understand. Thanks for commenting.

Would you advise using the patter as shown in the book (Royal Road to Card Magic as an example) and use that as a starting point while one is developing their style and character? This is what im currently doing. Slowly i improvise through the provided patter adding as i go.

I like that you said, "starting point." Patter in books and the patter that comes with tricks is just precisely that. The author's intent was to give you a starting point or frame of reference. In many cases, an effect makes no sense apart from patter, so the creator provides patter to provide the reader with a context or framework for the effect. One notable instance of a professional performer who used the exact published patter for an effect was Ricky Jay in his queen assembly. Watch this, and you can hear how his style changes from the production sequence which he wrote to the assembly sequence which was published kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLSFmNOb2Zy1nX0.html Even if you memorize published patter change it to fit your style of speech. It just so happens that the Erdnase patter for the effect that Ricky Jay does fits his pattern and manner of expression.
