As a business owner I’ve had professional contractors build several multi million dollar buildings for me. It finally got to where I wouldn’t even be on the property when the inspector was going to show up, most of them lollygagging in late like they have all day and most of them wouldn’t know a hard days work if it hit them in the head. Yes I am sure there are a few good ones out there, just not my experience.

We always follow them around and talk about hunting, fishing or whatever they like to do. Tell them they're underpaid and overworked. They usually won't nickel and dime you.

We have inspectors that don't keep up with current code requirements and show up late as if we didn't have a time table. They only check certain things and ignore everything else. It's a pain when we are exceeding code requirements and they don't have a clue what the code actually is.

Although I understand why you should fire stop the PEX pipe penetrations with Rockwood or Fire Rated Caulk, realistically, if there is a fire, the plastic PEX pipe will melt and allow fire to come through and thus make the fire caulk/rockwool pointless. But again, better something than nothing I guess
@trashcan1112
@trashcan1112 3 жыл бұрын
It's just poor word choice. It's more like SLOWING down the spread of fire rather than stopping it. Just giving that extra precious time until the fire fighters come in and extinguish the flame

@donc-m4900 3 жыл бұрын
hmm. the fire stop is wood. that burns nicely. buy time till FF get there
@ElectricGears

The idea of the fire stopping insulation is to block the air draft (chimney effect) that will bring fresh Oxygen to the fire and draw it up the wall cavity. You're right that it can't stop the fire, but it can dramatically slow it down. It's best to put it in anyways as it stops air movement in otherwise uninstalled interior walls. Actually burning through the PEX would be advantageous since it's filled with high pressure water.

Try this get a bottle with about an inch of water and a bottle thats empty. Put a lighter or torch under each one. The bottle with water won't burn trough but the one without water will melt and burn so same thing with the pipe. Even if the pex melts it will spray water on the fire which helps put it out.
