In this video I spend a lot of time crawling around the attic. I fail at my first attempt to exhaust the bathroom vent when the ductwork rips. In round two I complete the task. #DIYhomefront #bathroomexhaust #bathroomsoffitvent

Big box stores carry a 4" coupler to connect those ducts, easy.

We have two big box stores in town but they are a 25 mile drive or thirty minutes away. in my truck with 18 miles per gallon that is tree gallons of gas and an hour drive. I repurpose a lot of stuff to save some time and money

Can’t you lay down plywood on the rafters, two, slide one forward as you shimmy to the next The exhaust will just come back inside soffit you need roof exhaust

I have tried pieces of plywood before but it not any easier for me. I have a low pitch roof and 2x4 trusses which means there is not a lot of space between the connection points. Also, it requires at least two pieces of plywood one to lay on awhile you move the other one. just as much work but in a different way. I have had the comment about a roof vent many times, I need to climb into the attic and see if in the year it saw heavy use if any mold grew up there. Thanks for the comment.

All the steam out of the extractor fan will go back up into the loft through vents in the soffit

Never thought about that but that could be happening. I think I am more worried about the dryer doing that more than the shower just because of how much the dryer runs compared to the shower. Any thoughts on how to fix that? The only thing I can think of would be to replace some of the soffit on each side of the vets. Maybe 4 feet or so. I will have to think about it for a while.

It's actually a code violation in most area. You can't have a soffet exhaust vent through an unconditioned attic. The humid air tracks back in with subsequent mold/wood rot. In this case, the 'code' approved approach is though a vent on the side gable or through the roof. Important: if you decide, maybe I should block the little holes just next to the vent to keep the air from coming back in. That will work but you change the ability of the roof to ventilate properly, ultimately causing another problem.

@@DarenSpinelle Thanks for the heads up Daren. I put the vents in the soffit to eliminate the moister in the attic to start with not to create another problem. I will have to climb up into the attic and give it a good look.

I just watched a video from this old house on why you shouldn’t do that. You’re setting yourself up for problems.

Yea wish I had watched that before I vented the dryer.
