If you buy a switch, and use a crossover cable between one of the switch ports on the router connected to one of the new ports on the switch, all the rest of the ports on the new switch can be used, and will be in the same L2 broadcast domain (VLAN) as the original switch ports on the router (like an extension of the switch ports the router had.

Hey! my name is max and i have been struggling with this for a while now, i play alot of league of legends but what i have noticed is that whenever my parents come home my internet gets very bad, i have done some research and apparently its because of the iCloud, apparently the iCloud is automatically connecting to my wifi when they come home and this is affecting it. im just wondering, if i add more switches will it fix the problem? and if not are there anyways you know that could fix my problem
@ajbianchi03
@ajbianchi03 7 жыл бұрын
Turn off iCloud. No more switches wont fix it, worsen it actually. You might just need a bigger bandwidth monthly package, talk your parents into it lol... 50Mbps is necessary now days, you might have a cheaper 5 or 10 to save money. If you do have a good service speed and a little savvy read on: First, you have to be the network administrator then go into your routers settings (login page, ID, and password), if you don't know how to get there (usually 192.168.0.1) ask your parents, if they are computer savvy they will likely know what you did though, which could cause their TV shows to buffer if they use online videos and you have less than a 50gbps subscription. If they are not so great with a computer ask for the router settings login or better yet find it on your own if possible. Once there Go into DHCP\Address Reservation and reserve the IP you have now so you will always have it (probably is one of these ten 192.168.0.100-110). The router will tell you the IP or go to cmd and type C:\>ipconfig. Now go to 'Bandwidth Control' and 'Enable' then set Egress (upload in Kbps usually, so 5120 is 5Mbps) and Ingress (download speed typ. Kbps) rules so you and your reserved IP are unlimited (or the mass) and all the other IP ranges have a max of 35-60% bandwidth depending on what they do, how many people in your home, and if any complaints arise, if they already do you probably have a very low monthly Mbps monthly plan, also prime time day hours tend to slow a little regardless. This way you are getting a big slice of the pie because you need it, and their simple browsing is not and won't slow down if that's all they do because they don't need 50mbps to KZfaq or just do what most people do online, the router default splits bandwidth into equal parts so if 6 people are online you all get 16.7% of the available speed if you are all max usage, most all modems and routers are smart and will allocate based on need though, so you should be getting 80% or more at most times when they are not loading or just reading content. So it sounds like it's most likely that you just need more bandwidth... Possibly a faster computer and you're confusing CPU and RAM lag with internet lag, or you need to set bandwidth control like I mentioned above, but it seems like the least likely option now that I think of it, unless your cable modem, router and internet equipment is pretty old, update the firmware, get a better router online, if you are just using the one supplied by your provider it's definitely worth the 80 bucks or less for a good (not great but 80 get's you a good router) wireless/wired router with FTP USB on back. And disable your cloud, Google Drive robs my RAM.. Probably same with Apple.. Better yet switch to PC,.

ImKeyser_Söze well actually bud i have and did have about 110mbps while also having 400g we had basically the best internet we could buy and it was still affecting it, i changed to an ethernet cable and everything was fixed thanks anyways tho
@ajbianchi03
@ajbianchi03 7 жыл бұрын
MaxAnthonyCope You can still snag more of the bandwidth through the router settings and DHCP and bandwidth control, or setting up guest accounts and throttling egress and ingress speeds... 110mbps you are cruising though if you actually are receiving that from the company so no need I guess! I have 50 and it's always been plenty even with 3 people streaming HD

GREAT POSTING OP! Just so everyone knows there is a reason why it's called a SWITCH. It's not just a standard Ethernet Hub. The switch actually switches the LAN connection to the node (i.e. PC) so that for a fraction of a second it is the only connection to the router at that split moment in time. Other connections have no connection to router at that moment in time but since it is so fast they never notice it. That means you get 100% (per se) of the Ethernet throughput at that moment in time. With a standard HUB you share that Ethernet throughput with everyone else (i.e. nodes) on your LAN at the same time - so not 100% at all. So it's important to remember that you are dealing with a DIFFERENT piece of hardware and you must adjust your thinking to compensate. As they say you must "think outside the box". For instance: You can not expect to avoid the UPLINK jack thinking you can just plug and play with the other jacks. Like the OP says you must use it to link to your router's uplink jack. But if you are not suffering from LAN network congestion why introduce a switch when your hub was working just fine? I think that introducing a switch when you aren't really having any congestion problems (because you have a lot of active LAN nodes) _MAY_ introduce other issues for you. So only do it if you need it not because it's a trendy or cool thing to do.

i could be wrong but I think the video is incorrect, or at least incomplete, for one thing, the uplink port is usually using the same wires as the port next to it, but has some wires crossed. Now if you have a crossed cable, you can basically use any of the numbered ports, on both devices. The only thing the uplink port is for is to avoid having to use a crossed cable. However, if you put the cable on both ends in the uplink port the signal gets crossed at the one end and then crossed back at the other end... which is wrong. Ofcourse you can use both uplink ports....if you use a crossed cable.... but that is what the uplink port is made for to avoid So, summarizing: if you use a crossed utp cable you can stick it in any of the numbered ports on both devices and if you have a straight cable, use the uplink port on 1 side and a numberd port on the other side if you use the uplink port, the numbered port next to it is unusable (coz it is on the same wires)

When I try to connect more than two devices, the lights blink slowly off and on then the connection is lost, then I have to reset the router. I am using an ATT DSL Router with the typical 4 port LAN. Is there any excessive overload on a port when you add a switch??? I think not,,,

It would have been cool to mention the other potentially huge benefit of using a fast switch. That is to drastically increase the speed of network traffic within your network. I mean from one computer to another. That is because if you get a gigabit switch then that will determine the speed from one of your computers to the other if both computers have gigabit network cards, which most new computers have. Routers are usually much slower than a gigabit. Also what about hubs? You didn't mention the difference between a hub and a switch, which is verrrrrrry important. You speak very clearly and your videos are decent, although it would be nice if you could zoom in and show the labels. Just a suggestion is to be more informative. You easily had time to explain what I said and made the video much more interesting. The info you gave could have been said in half the time. Please do not be insulted. I am trying to give some positive feedback, not to make you feel bad. Sorry if I am a bit direct.

Hi, I am using a switch which is located in one of the bedrooms. The switch has 24 ports that runs all over the house. The Xfinity router is located in another room. What I have nearby the xfinity router is couple of Internet outlets (that is internally wired through walls from the switch I mentioned above). Now, how can I make the switch get "internet" so that all of the outlets are internet enabled. The Switch and Router are located in 2 different rooms. Do I have to physically run a cable from the router to the switch? or Can I use one of the internet outlets that I have next to the Router as a "port" of the switch itself and connect it to the router? I Hope my question is clear. Please let me know, I can explain further. Thanks

lol, well its' only been 5 years but I'll still give you my answer. I'm no expert but I believe routers are much slower at processing data than switches. Plus you have to go in and configure the second router to behave like a switch, which can be tricky if you don't know what you're doing.

That configuration connects the modem to the wifi router and then the router to the switch, right? Is there any difference between connecting the switch directly to the modem and then the wifi router to the switch? The reason I ask is because 99% of the time we use lan for all our devices. However, we do want wifi access available. Which way would be more efficient or does it not matter? Maybe I'm just not completely understanding how it all works.

I know this is old and you've probably already come to a conclusion on this but I'll answer anyway for future readers. Simply put it depends on the switch you are using. The switch in this video is unmanaged meaning you have no way of accessing it to change any settings, it's just plug and play. So in that case you'd want to have the router connected to the modem and then the unmanaged switch connected to the router.

No, you don't. If you choose to use one of the regular ports, just keep in mind that you will need to use a straight through cable when going from a switch to a router, and a crossover cable when going from a switch to another switch, or a router to another router. What the uplink port does is removes the requirement of needing to use different types of cables.

All About Home Electronics.com Right. Your pronunciation of the word kind of threw me off. I've always heard it pronounced as "roo-ter". Rout (noun), pronounced the same way I guess you would pronounce "route", is a disorderly retreat of defeated troops.

To avoid any misunderstanding, the correct spelling is "router".

Lot of waffle for a simple connection and no decent explanation of systems that do not have an uplink port.

I'm using a sky broadband router with my phone line adsl plugged in and there is only 4 network sockets on the back of my router no uplink labeled. I use one of these to connect to my linksys switch box but anything I then plug into the Linksys to further my network connection dosen't work.

I have wireless modem router. Now, I run out of wired port. Do I need a switch to expand wired port? Will any devices (wired or wireless) connected to the switch and the modem router be in the same domain as I need those devices to talk each other? Do I just simply using a straight LAN cable to connect one of port on the modem router to one of port of the switch? Are there any specific requirements for the switch?

My router doesn't have an Uplink port. Can I simply use one of the LAN ports? What is the difference?

Yes, definitely! Most modern devices don't need it. If you have older device and it doesn't work, you'll have to use cross-over cable. Uplink port just crosses transmit and receive wires (cross-over cable does the same thing) so it eliminates the need to use cross-over cable. But pretty much all modern devices suport Auto MDI-X, that detects if the connection would require a cross-over, and automatically switches the port to MDI-X (uplink) mode. Btw. You have to connect uplink port to normal port! Never connect two uplink ports together as shown in the video! The cross-over have to happen only on one side, if you connect two uplink ports together it'll be as if you connected two normal ports together! So if your switch does have uplink port, you can connect it to any port on the router (except the WAN port) and even if the devices don't support Auto MDI-X it will work.
