In this video, which is Video #4 in this Six-Part series on How to Set Up Your Turntable, we discuss how you can can properly connect your turntable to a receiver or integrated amplifier, as well as how to connect your turntable to an external phono preamp.
In addition to the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntables, you will see the Marantz PM5004 (integrated amplifier), the Schitt Mani (external phono preamp), and the Vincent PHO-8 (external phono preamp).
This video aims to help you specifically understand two important things:
1) How to set up your turntable properly if you have a record player that features a built in phono preamp.
2) How to set up your turntable correctly if you have a record player that doesn't have a built in phono preamp.
Additional videos in this six-part series are as follows:
-How to Set Up a Turntable Effectively (VIDEO 1)
-How to Balance a Tonearm, Align Cartridge (VIDEO 2)
-How to Change Turntable Needle, Install New Cartridge (VIDEO 3)
-Setting Up Your Speakers (VIDEO 5)
-Understanding How to Play Vinyl Records (VIDEO 6)
Thanks for watching!

TRANSCRIPT:
Hey everyone, it’s Michael from Devoted to Vinyl. And this is the fourth video in a six part video series that I’ve created that’s aimed at helping you properly set up your turntable so you can begin buying and playing your records.
Finally, right? We’re almost there.
[INTRO]
Now if you were with me in the last video, then you know that we covered how to go about changing your record player’s stylus. But in this video, I wanted to focus on how you can go about connecting your turntable to your integrated amplifier or your external phono preamp.
So that’s what we will be discussing in today’s video.
First, let’s go over how to connect your turntable to a receiver or integrated amplifier if you have a turntable WITH a BUILT-IN phono preamp. You can connect your RCA cable that’s coming from your record player directly into the CD or Auxiliary (AUX) input of your receiver or integrated amplifier.
After you connect the RCA cable properly, don’t forget to securely connect the ground wire too.
Now, if you are using a turntable WITHOUT a built in phono preamp (such as the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon that we’ve been using in these videos), then you have two options.
The first is very easy. If you already have an integrated amplifier with a built in PHONO stage, simply connect the RCA cables to the PHONO input and securely connect the ground wire, as well. Now, if you want to use an external phono preamp, like the Vincent PHO-8, for example, then there are a few additional steps you’ll need to take. But the end result is often better quality sound and more control over your sound than simply using an amplifier’s built-in PHONO section.
Before getting started, it’s important to quickly mention how this will work. First, you’re going to have to connect your turntable to your external phono preamp. Then, you’ll be connecting your phono preamp to your receiver or integrated amplifier.
Because of this, you’ll need two pairs of RCA cables to properly complete this setup.
To begin, you need to attach the RCA cables and ground wire to the RCA output and grounding post of your turntable.
Now, take the other end of the RCA cable and connect it into your external phono preamp’s RCA input. Then, connect the other end of the ground wire to the back of the external phono preamp.
Next, take your second set of RCA cables and connect them to the RCA outputs on your external phono preamp.
Next, we’re going to need to connect the other end of the RCA cable to the receiver or integrated amplifier.
So, on the back of your receiver or integrated amplifier, find an unused input, like the CD input or the AUX input for example, and connect the RCA cables.
Just remember-when you’re using an external phono preamp-do NOT connect the RCA cables to the PHONO input. You only do that when there’s no phono preamp involved in your system’s connection path-be it an external phono preamp like the Vincent PHO 8 or the Schitt Mani, or a preamp that’s built into the turntable itself.
So that’s it guys, I hoped you enjoyed this video. And I hope it helped you a little bit, as well. If it did, I would love it if you could hit the “like” button down below. And don’t forget to Subscribe to Devoted to Vinyl, because you can be alerted whenever a new video is uploaded to my channel.
And if you’re interested in learning how to properly set up and connect your speakers, so that you can finally start listening to your vinyl records, make sure you check out video number five in my six part video series.
Thanks again for watching, and I’ll see you in the next video.

Hello there! I’m a new subscriber and this video helped me in regards to hooking components to the receiver. I have a uTurn Orbit turntable and a uTurn Pluto preamp and I can easily hook the preamp to the CD input of the Pioneer VXS-3300 receiver that was handed down from my dad, also got his Sony floor standing speakers and at able to retire my Edifier bookshelf speakers. Now question, there’s a ground post on the preamp but not the turntable (it’s internally grounded but I still got some hum when I first set up, I just connected speaker cable from the post of the preamp to the outside screw of the outlet where my power strip is plugged (works surprisingly). Would I need to use the ground post on the receiver for my configuration or is it only for when you connect your turntable to the built in phono function of the receiver?

I have a Technics 1200 I want to plug into my Pioneer DDJ SX2 controller. Playing my normal records through the phono of the controller give a much crappier sound (almost unlistenable, flat bass and feel distorted or weak) if I compare this to say plugging my Technics turntables into an analog mixer like the Pioneer DJM series mixers. Could I create a perfect sound that I usually hear from analog mixer if I buy a preamp and plug my turntable into this preamp and then preamp into the controller (into the phono). Are there preamps that can provide plugs for two turntables, or just buy one preamp for each turntable? Thanks for your help.

Okay, well, if you have a built in phono preamp then you should just be able to plug the red and white cables into a free input on your receiver (like the CD input). Then just make sure your LINE/PHONO switch on the back of your record player is on the right setting.

OK that explains why my turntable sounded Terrible after I turned ON the built-in Pre-amp that comes with the TT, then connected it to my Receiver that already has a Pre-amp. It sounds OK when I turn the built-in Preamp OFF, but then I really got to turn up the volume on the Receiver ? I'm thinking about getting the Pro-Ject Tube Box S2, sometime in the future, but right now I don't have any available inputs on my receiver. Everything is taken.

A while back, I connected the stereo output from my PC to the Phono input of my integrated amp and nearly blew up my speakers. I hadn't realised that the Phono input expects a signal that hasn't passed through a preamp (I guess the sound card in a PC is basically a preamp). Anyway, I connected the PC to the CD input instead and everything was fine.....phew!

Thank you that was a helpful video. Question, I am using a 1byone H004 kit. It has a phono stage built in to the turntable then goes directly to passive bluetooth speakers. Its definitely a lower end system but suprisingly good for my small apartment. It has a setting to turn off the phono stage. I was wondering if I could turn it off and attach a Mani 2 or Ifi Zen phono stage and go directly to the speakers or would I have to connect to an amp or reciever then to speakers? I am new to this so please forgive my ignorance, ha.

If I understand you correctly, you can (hopefully) bypass or not use the built in phono preamp of the turntable, connect it to a Schiit Mani, then connect the Mani into a receiver or amp, and then export through your passive speakers.

Yeah, you should be able to buy an amp or even a receiver and just plug the rca cables into something like the CD input. Then connect your speakers.

So I have a audio technica AT-LP60 that I want to plug into a phono preamp because my receiver does not a have a phono input. My question though is will I still be able to connect to the preamp with just the two rca cables? because there is no ground wire coming from the back of the turntable. If anyone reading this could help me out that would be greatly appreciated THANKS

So the AT-LP60 has a built in phono preamp, so you don't need to worry whether your receiver or amp has a phono stage/phono input. All you'd need to do is reach behind the turntable and slide the knob to LINE, then plug your RCA cables into something like the CD or AUX input in the back of your receiver.

@@DevotedtoVinyl Ahh okay yeah that is how I have it set up currently, switch to LINE and RCA cables plugged into an AUX input. So basically there is not need for me to get an external phono preamp?
@DevotedtoVinyl
@DevotedtoVinyl 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreymartino7450 Correct. Just turn your amp on to the AUX input and you're all set.
