Thank you so much for a clear video and great buying suggestions. While sequestered due to Corona - we decided to organize our LP collection (162 albums - we bought mostly in the '70's). We have our '74 Marantz turntable and a 2010 amplifier that has NEVER worked correctly together. Didn't ever have the time to dig into the problem - hadn't listened to albums in years because we need a preamp!! Thanks again.

The Pyle/Beringher pre's are, as you noted, just fine for getting started. I would also throw the ART DJ PRE II preamp out there as a great starter preamp. It's a little bit more at $50 instead of $30, but you're getting IMO higher quality right out of the gate that rivals much more expensive units. You won't be as eager to "upgrade" later if you step up just a bit getting started.

Firstly, thanks for your prompt reply. The Yamaha amp has a phono input so it was easy to plug the RCA cables from the Turntable into the Amp and connect the ground wire also. So, it should all work. As the phono light on the amp is not lighting up ( or indeed any other of the source lights), it may be a problem with the Amp itself. On the back of the Amp is a two pin power input. I see on your video you have something ( the Turntable power point plug???) plugged in about where the two pin is located on the back of my Amp. What do you have plugged in there? Cheers. Phillip

Thanks for this mate. I've just bought a Pioneer DDJ 1000 and when running turntables through the built in pre-amp the records are lacking fullness and the sound quality just isn't there. I just purchased the Yamaha 683 receiver recently. My older model Numark turntable does not have the same sound quality as it did on my older receiver. I have to turn the volume up significantly to listen at the same rate as I would to something on Bluetooth that goes through the receiver. Would I benefit from buying a preamp for the phono when I already have a phono input and ground cord on the receiver?

This is my first time watching your video on turntables & & how the pre amp set up should be. My question to you is. I am running a Audio Technica turntable. On my Yamaha Receiver, I do not have the phono preamp plugins. So I am using the CD plugin. Is that OK to do? My next question is this. When I am playing my LP's, When I go to turn up the volume, I get distortion coming out of the speakers. Could it be, That I have the turntable to close to the Receiver or to close to the speaker? Waiting for your feedback, Thanks Wayne...
@StillSpinning3
@StillSpinning3 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Wayne! Yes, you can use the CD input (I do the same thing) but you will need a phono preamp if your turntable doe not have one built it. The turntable proximity to your receiver should not cause distortion. Are you able to hear the music okay even with distortion?

I cannot get my turntable (with a built in preamp) AT-LP60X to work with my receiver (Yamaha R-S202). I have it on the line option and connected to a line input in the receiver. I’m not sure if the preamp that is built in isn’t compatible or if the internal preamp is damaged or what. Receiver to speaker connection works, because I used the receiver Bluetooth option and can play music from my phone to the receiver to the speakers. I feel like I’ve tried everything and am at my wits end. I would be curious if you had advice or had experience with this problem before. :)

I have a Hitachi P17 turntable ( about 1977). I have a Yamaha AX 596 Amplifier ( about 2001). So very, very similar to your Video. I added some speakers from an all in one system. I know for fact everything is set up properly ( it is too complicated to explain why) BUT no sound. The lights on the source input don't light up. AM I SUPPOSED TO PLUG THE TURNTABLE INTO THE AC CABLE PORT AT THE BACK OF MY AMPLIFIER??? If not, then I have a problem with my AMP that needs fixing. If the turntable has a preamp, is it best to use the "line" input of the receiver? Or if the turntable has the option to turn off the preamp and has a Line selection, plug the turntable to "phono" if the receiver has the inputs. Is that the logic behind this? I have a 30 year old 5.1 pioneer vsx5600 receiver that has an "Phono" input (which I am assuming it already has an amp) and I am thinking of buying an audio technica LP120xusb that says it has a switchable "phono preamp" and "line level" selection options. So, in theory if i select the "line level" on the turntable and plug the rca into the "phono" input of the receiver, I should be okay. Am I correct?

Your turntable has line/phono switch in the back. If your receiver has a phono input meaning it has a built in phono pre amp you should switch your turntable to the phono switch. This bypasses the turntables built in preamp. The line switch on the turntable utilizes the turntables built in preamp and you should never run a preamp on top of a preamp.
@jeffgrayson7639
@jeffgrayson7639 Жыл бұрын
@@StillSpinning3 wrong , the line level switch on the back of the turntable utilizes the built in preamp. You shouldn't go preamp into preamp. Switch the turntable to phono and bypass the internal preamp then plug the RCA into the phono input of the amp

A question that many would have but no concrete answer is to be found. What is the compatibility (if any) between a pre-amplified turntable (phono/line switch) with RCA output and a setup of two active studio monitors that have XLR input? What is the technical linkage between this two?

Hi everyone, I have a DJM Nexus 2 mixer connected to a receiver, two speakers and two decks. We use to have two analog turntables connected and they produced sound without issue. Took pictures of the connections/setup and moved and used the photos to ensure I had everything connected perfectly and of course... no sound coming out of our two turntables. I was curious if maybe the pre-amp in my mixer could have blown out? Maybe I'm doing something wrong and don't realize. Any insight or guidance anyone could provide would be immensely appreciated. Are you running your phono preamp outputs into the phono input of a receiver? If so, use a different audio input so you are not running through two phono preamps. If you are running turntable into preamp into active monitors, maybe look at a small mixer or studio monitor volume control so you can get more control of the signal level going into the speakers.
@drewlsy
@drewlsy 4 жыл бұрын
So if your receiver already has a phono input then it is assumed that there is a pre-amp already installed in the receiver. Is it adviseable to also run a pre-amp coupled with your receiver for even better performance? Or is it one or the other?
@StillSpinning3
@StillSpinning3 4 жыл бұрын
I would feel confident if your receiver has a phono input that it has a built in preamp. You will know right away if it doesn’t and you are not using an external preamp. No, pairing two preamps will make your audio extremely loud and distorted. Not recommended.

I have a question.....I know that turntables with built-in preamps are generally frowned upon beaus they produce poor sound quality. The Audio-Technica AT-LP120 has a built-in that many people remove (lots of videos on doing this) and in doing so, improves the sound significantly of the LP120. Now, this type of preamp that you're showcasing today, is recommended if you use a "moving coil" cartridge because moving coil does not extract all the sound it can because it's very light weight and moves too quickly through the grooves. Running a turntable with a moving coil cartridge helps eliminate this issue. My question is this preamp, the kind that you're showcasing here today....Is this preamp any different than those that come inside a turntable like the LP120?
@StillSpinning3
@StillSpinning3 5 жыл бұрын
Long story short, yes there is a difference. I used to use a cheaper preamp and I found that this minor upgrade made a difference in the quality of sound. There is no "right way" of doing it. But to answer your question this setup will sound better than the factory setup of the AT-LP120.
@RumbleFish69
@RumbleFish69 5 жыл бұрын
Still Spinning great! I appreciate the response.....I just purchased a pretty costly moving coil cartridge and for all the positive reviews it gets, no one tells you that you should get one of these preamps in order to take full advantage of what a moving coil cartridges can do. I don't have a problem getting, yet another, piece of equipment, I just want to make sure I'm not trading good sound for bad sound. I've heard the difference between an LP120 with an onboard amp and without one and there is a tremendous difference. I was just concerned that it would be the same thing, except on the outside. Personally, I'm not a fan of turntable onboard amps, but if there's a difference then I can accommodate the additional piece of equipment. Thanks for the input and clarity.

Nice tutorial. I have one of the types of record players that you spoke off at the start, a very inexpensive ION TRIO LP, speakers built in all that, it was a gift, not my choice, I was grateful to be given it. The problem is this, when connected to my little Digital T amp, which is a small amp, one RCA red/white input, the sound is flat, like it needs EQ or tone/bass added! I have a multi switch attached to the amp for other inputs, everything else sounds great-CD,MD, radio etc. The radio is actually fed through the wee ION as aux in and it is sounds fine. There is no dynamic range or nice rich tones from the record player, its strange. I don't know if it has phone pre-amp built in, but it must have. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
