Thanks to Louis' development and solution, we now have a very easy method where we can connect many of the popular BMSes to the Victron Venus OS (GX device or Raspberry Pi).
In this tutorial and workshop, I show you how to get started with this project and how easy it is to setup and also troubleshoot. We will connect different BMS to the Venus OS and see what data is actually being transmitted.

Awesome work my friend - just set my VENUS PI up with my JK. I never would have known it was possible before Andy. Thanks "mate" Also 1 important bit of advice is that you do NOT NEED to connect the ground to the adapter since 485 is a balance signal - so this will eliminate the ground loops if BMS isloates.

Im happy to see you finally give the integration a try! I’m glad that was easy for you. Batrium works natively (without Venus mods) and can handle many different battery packs at once and report as a single storage system while still giving individual pack and cell visibility. It can also handle 500 or 1000amps depending on the shunt you choose to get with it. I highly recommend the 1k version. It works much better with large cables. Would you like to try one? I might have one laying around that I can ship to you to play with. Also if you turn on “Has dc system” in the VenusOS, then you’ll get the little marching ants showing a charge coming from a dc source that is not part of the victron system. I.e. your desktop charger.

Thanks Andy. Do you think this may become a feature of the next generation of BMS’? Having both Bluetooth and WiFi access to the BMS through the app? It seems to me that a WiFi BMS with the functionality of the JK-BMS with the balancing power of the Neey balancer would be the ultimate solution.

@@AussieAustrian I don't know. It also adds some complexity to your system. And do you really need to know what your battery is doing if you're not at home? Once it is all setup and working, there is less and less need to have all these information from anywhere, I guess.

Before yesterday I finally finished my 2 battery banks of each 16x23ßAH CATL cells and plugged the 2 JK BMS into my Cerbo GX with the 2 adapters boughts months ago, when I've seen this video. It worked like a charme, the Cerbo found them immediatly. Thanks for your work. Just the SOC the JK sends is far off the reality but I think this is depending to the really flat voltage curve of these cells. I dont care about that. For testing I switched the balancing on, the cells are at around 10% soc and the difference in voltage has been around 0,020V. A few hours later, they have been perfectly balanced. Now I'll go with your setting at 3,45V for balancing.

The GPS port on the JK BMS is in fact a TTL serial port. Your black box is a TTL to rs485 converter. You could have used a ttl2usb converter instead of the two converters you used. You would have to supply power to the converter, however. And a warning: The rightmost pin is connected to battery +, therefore you have battery voltage there!

Moin Andi, very interesting video! But be aware of ground connectivity: Ground on your BMS communication port will be B-, simply because these interfaces should also work when the BMS has shutdown the battery. Ground on your inverter or DC/DC converter is P-. So if you connect both your BMS and inverter to the same raspberry pi without using at least one USB adapter with galvanic isolation, you've created an alternative path for the current to flow as soon as the BMS turns off the battery. This will surely fry at least one of the components in the path. So be careful what you connect.
@danielvanaalst2460

Unfortunately that is very correct. This is the reason my rapberry pi does not work anymore. The BMS tripped, and the Raspberry died by trying to handle 290A... That adapter is actually a mess: it contains an entire microcontroller to convert the TTL signal coming out of the BMS to true RS-485. Then you need the USB adapter to essentially convert that RS-485 signal back to TTL... I told Nami they should just provide a simple TTL-USB module and be done with it. You can also make a cable and use a TTL/USB adapter and skip their RS-485 adapter.

Hello Andy, I am an avid follower of your videos and am always waiting for the next one. - I hope you find time to answer me, because I know that you get a lot of comments in the block due to the many followers - I have a question about the different BMS solutions that you have presented and some of which you are also using yourself . I built two 24V batteries, each with 8 EVE280Ah cells, and decided on the Jaibada BMS with the "thick" relay. I have these batteries running in parallel. Unfortunately, one of these BMS has failed. It can no longer be set to 8 cells and therefore reports low voltage to the cells that are not present. I've decided to replace this BMS but don't want to use the JBD BMS anymore as I'm not that happy with the relay solution, although galvanic isolation also has advantages. Now to the question: Which of the solutions you are using would you recommend as the best? My requirements are 24V (8 cells), max. load current 100A, possible connection to VenusOS and iOS and satisfactory balancing. I also use a Heltec balancer. - I would be happy if you could give me a tip. - Ich danke Dir schon mal im voraus für Deine Antwort.

When it comes to USB serial ports, be aware that the cheapies often do not have unique serial numbers. This isn't an issue if you have just one of them connected to a linux system but it can cause issues if there is more than one. The waveshare ports do have unique serial numbers, and are stable too, ie they don't just randomly stop working requiring a device reset etc.

That's maybe the reason why only the expensive one works with my EM24. Cheap RS485 to USB interfaces did not work.

@@tassieflash63 when Andy turned the adapter over I was able to see that it's an RS485 converter. The JKBMS outputs TTL and the adapter rewrites it to RS485 protocol. I think it's simpler to read the TTL directly and cut out the $15 cable.

Andy, does the BMS has to be connected to Raspberry or Cerbo during the installation? You video implies that you installed the driver first and then you connected BMS after restart. Is that correct assumption? Thanks

@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia Жыл бұрын
From what they told me, they have modified the BMS for the 4S version and therefore the GPS port is now the comms port. So the actual CAN/RS485 port at the BMS is not the comms port any more. That makes so no sense at all. I've got a Cerbo here now and will do more testing with the communication. Doing all this on a Pi seems not very beginner friendly.

HI thanks for this wonderful simple channel. I'm new to this and I'm trying to install a Campervan solar system. I see that you are connecting a BMS to a RPi except none of them are inside a sealed lithium battery. I have built the raspberry pi and want to make all the connections. I know I'm sounding a bit stupid here, but the Eco Worthy batteries are not smart. They will be connected to a Victron smart charger controller. How does the BMS turn the battery off in case of low voltage disconnect. Is it through the plus and minus connects? As I'm using Eco Worthy batteries with JBD-HP28SA BMS what type of RJ485 connectors will I need to connect to the RPi, will victron RJ485 to USB work? I'm confused because I fitted an EPEVER BN Tracer controller with an MT50 display, this seemed to work, but if you're connecting an inverter to the battery how quickly can a solar controller switch off the battery through the BMS. I just seems that as the display has comms to the controller but not to the battery (no wires) how does the BMS know what to do? Again for those not to bright people who are not going to open up their batteries to try and connect a BMS physically could you show how to do this with a sealed non smart lithium battery and a raspberry Pi? Many thanks

When DVCC is Enabled, the BMS could send these three parameters to Venus: Discharge Current Limit, Charge Current Limit and Charge Voltage Limit (DCL, CCL, CVL). I wonder if this serialbattery driver sent any values for these parameters. They should be visible in the Venus menu under SerialBattery (jkbms) / Parameters, shown at 22:07 in your video.

The RS485 standard was designed with support for multipoint communication in mind. However, the protocol which is used on top of it also needs to support that. One of such protocols is the openly-published Modbus protocol. It is has a concept of device address which is part of most messages. Since the communication medium (the RS485 bus) is shared, all the devices listen on it all the time. But they only reply back if the device address in the transmitted message matches their own configured address. Given the Modubs protocol, if there are multiple devices connected to the same bus and if they are configured to use different addresses, then they can all successfully communicate to the server device (i.e. the device which sends the initial messages). This in effect means that if those devices are made aware of each others' addresses, they can also transmit the initial messages (i.e. act as a server) and communicate between themselves. However, many BMSs, such as the JBD BMS, use custom, non-standard communication protocols over RS485. Such protocols often do not have a concept of configurable address. And therefore, if multiple such devices are connected to the same RS485 bus, they would all try to reply to every message that is transmitted there. That would result in interference which would make it impossible for the server device to successfully receive a comprehensible reply. Therefore, if such protocols are used, the communication between a server and multiple client devices is effectively impossible in practice.

@@pbasista does RS485 also have the termination resistor like CAN? With CAN you need a 120ohm resistor at each end. The BMS have these on-board making the assumption that they are at one end and the inverter is on the other. If you connected two BMS each with 120ohm resistors enabled (Plus one on the Venus device) connectivity may not work

Yes, except that jkbms rs485 protocol doesn't support address, so you can't target a specific device on the bus

@@gavinnoname1424 Yes, it is possible to use the termination resistor. The details are on Wikipedia, for instance. But in my experience the open-ended topology is reliable enough as well, at least for short cable runs (~5 m).

SO ON OTHER NEWS.... what happened with the electrician what was the feedback that you got. Never heard the feedback you got about the heltec BMS if it was able to be calibrated.

It's already 1 year since you published this video, so I'm pretty late with commenting. However, it's interesting to see the Vevus OS on a Raspberry, however I got an Cerbo from Victron and wonder if I can use the serial connection between my JK-BMS (8-24 batteries) and the Cerbo directly like I connect the two Victron chargers (150/35) with the VE-direct cable. It's also a serial connection. Does the Cerbo-S GX "talk" with the JK-BMS directly?

Great video, turns out I have a few of the parts required. When using an inverter/charger (230V), I've noticed the current reading of the BMS fluctuates wildly, a known problem. Will using the BMS as a battery monitor mess up the results for the GX? The Victron shunt doesn't suffer this problem.
