Move the world with a PICO! Well, maybe not the world but lots of other things. In this video we introduce you to RC Servo control with the PICO. The PICO provides easy to use tools that give you precise control of motion and therefore moving objects. RC Servos are a great choice in robotics and animatronics.

Hah, I came across your video because I'm building exactly the kind fixture you're using. I also noticed the disparities of "economy" servos and needed a way to "calibrate" them. I'm using a pair of limit switches with a configurable angle between them. The pico increments the duty in one direction until it hits the first switch and records the duty at that position. Then it does the same thing in the other direction. Finally, knowing the angle between switchs and the duty range between them, I can find the duty per degree. The limit switches are probably overkill, but its more of an excuse to learn how to use them for a future project.

I like your approach for solving that problem, that is also how circuits are handled for gear motors that need to be controlled at the end points of travel. When using stepper motors the same concept works effectively as well. Cheers! Chris

Interesting to see those little servo devices. I have been implementing servo control on lifting equipment for much of my working life. Those little servos look like fun to play with. I am surprised they use 50hz. Thanks regards Chris

Wow, I am sorry I missed responding to your comment, I just saw it today while responding to another one. Those servos are a lot of fun and useful in a variety of ways. Pick some up and have some fun with them. Cheers! Chris

Do you have a video explaining how to use continuous servos

When I saw your request I thought sure, let me post the link. So I looked for the link and I could not find any titles for continuous rotation servos. Apparently I don't have one on that topic yet, sorry. Chris

@@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut ah that’s okay thanks for checking Chris! Amazon accidentally send me 360 degree servos instead of the 180 ones and wanted to know if it’s easy to code them but I think I’ll just return them

How would I go about changing the speed of the servo and have it programmed to buttons so 1 button makes the speed go down and another button makes the speed go up? Is this possible? If so I would also like to do the same with the amount of rotation the servo can move and have that also programmed to 2 buttons. I’m a complete beginner to this stuff, I have managed to get my servo moving from the push of a button but now I want to implement the above mentioned functions, just can’t wrap my head around how I would code it. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi GucciGang1285. What you ask for regarding speed control is not trivial. I had some code to do something similar, but it never really worked good. I would love to give it another try, but just don't have time for it in the near future. I seem to recall (be warned, my memory is horrible) Adafruit may have a library to do that. That is all I can offer at this time, sorry. Chris

Great tutorial! How would you control a bigger servo (e.g. MG996R) ? Would you need something in between Pico and MG996R ? Or MG996R can directly be connected to Pico?

Thank you very much for the kind words! As for larger servos, you are correct in thinking you will need something in between the PICO and the Servo. The PICO can only source a small amount of current (

It is a little far from your excellent points, but - where did you find those neat vise clamps?

Hi Arnold, I wasn't sure what you were referring to so I had to review the video. That is a Vise that I 3D printed. I found the design on Thingiverse and printed it. It has actually been very useful and I suspect I will print more of them. Sometimes 3D prints actually can be useful! Cheers Chris
