Hi everyone
In this vid we do the job that every narrowboat owner dreads. It's called blacking the Hull. I was lucky to get sponsored by SML paints who kindly sent me their product in return for a non biased review. We have a huge water system called Brushy Creek that runs smack thru Austin's surrounding counties. And though the creek's not wide enough for a narrow boat, they are canoe navigable! Lo and behold, on a recent adventure with little whippet, Lucy, we ran into the back of our local dog park. Best day ever mate. Our family has missed you. Looking forward to more vids. that was great to see thank you, hard work of course but worth it. thank you for explaining everything so well, you don't get that on many narrow boat vlogs, so its good to see what really goes on, and needs to be done when you have a narrow boat. hope you enjoy your beers and look forward to the travels with the dogs.

Bitumen or 2 pack export, 2 pack all the way! If you factor in dry dock rental and labour over 10 years epoxy is definitely cheaper.

Great video can’t understand why you do not spray you have the equipment also you could offer this to your customers after sandblasting

Hi Ken Unfortunately I don't have the equipment and this is my friends dock . It's a historic dock in a conservation area so no blasting. I would love to offer this service to my customers but unfortunately I can't. Thanks for watching the vlogs bud 👍

Just like doing a Fiberglass hull, except I spent days laying on my back using a 7 inch grinder to take off the bottom paint down to the gel coat. Then there is the time critical application of the two part waterproofing system and first coat of bottom paint. that leads to a 14 hour day for that process! Done a few and didn't like it!

Good to see you back Del. How do you paint the bits of hull that are sat on the supports? Do you just have to try and get to them next time?

Thanks 😊. I don't paint the bottom. Some do but I don't. It's a bit of a decisive subject. Dodger was built in 1986 and the bottom us still as good as new . It's to do with the low oxygen content on the bottom of the canal.

Great video! I feel your pain!!! Newbie question: What do you do about the keel? Does that get painted? Hope the dogs are OK!

Hi Richard. Some people paint the bottom but I don't. The oxygen level at the bottom of the canal is very low so you don't really get corrosion. I inspect it every time and it's like new. I would however paint it if I was in deeper water. Thanks for watching. Del and the hounds 👍

This may be a daft question, but how do they drain the dry dock once the boat is in there??

There's a big pump at the bottom that pumps the water out. You can see it in the vlog as I walk down the steps into the dock 👍

I thought you said that you were putting 3 coats on?

I was putting 1 slap coat on and 2 thin roller coats but decided on 2 slap coats due to time constraints and the fact that I'm back out in 2 years anyway. I would recommend 2 to 3 slap coats and will do another vid in 2 years to see the results. Thanks for watching Martin 👍

What a ruddy horrible dirty job. You certainly deserved several pints of the best as a reward. Out of interest how many coats did you finally do and how many 5 litre tins of paint did it take?

Hi Bob. Yes it was a horrible job. I managed to get on 2 slap coats (thick coats) . I'm coming out again in a few years so didn't go mad plus I didn't have the time. Each coat took 5 ltrs of paint and there was enought paint in the kit to do 3 coats if I wanted. I really can't recommend sml enough. A really down to earth company who were always there at the end of the phone if I had a question.

@@Boatdog_Traveller Beacon is a cracking pub, just don’t take the dogs as they get a bit funny about four legged friends! But the ales are superb and cobs not bad, but not as good as Anchor cobs in Caunsall

@@Boatdog_Traveller The Queens Head in Wolverley is worth a try too, new owners have done a great job and food is spot on, but you have to book as it gets full! Easy walk for you from the cut nearby 👍🏻
