Riverford sells fair trade bananas from the Dominican Republic -- chosen for their flavour, not because of how bent or how long they are. The ideal snack food, bananas are extremely nutritious and come with their own packaging.
How to cook
Bananas mash best when their skins begin to speckle. Overripe bananas are best cooked in banana bread, muffins or cakes.
How to store
Bananas will continue to ripen in a fruit bowl and will cause other fruit to ripen faster.
Varieties
We sell Cavendish bananas, which are available all year round.
Riverford's banana farmers
Riverford bananas are grown by the Banelino co-operative of small-scale farmers in the north west region of the Dominican Republic. They share equipment and knowledge to create the economies of scale necessary to compete with privately owned plantations.
Fairtrade bananas
As well as being organic, our bananas are also Fairtrade. This means we pay an extra $1 for every 18kg box which goes directly back to the community, via Banelino. Some is used to improve the equipment and skills of the farmers themselves; the rest funds social projects like schools and healthcare provision. After a 9 day voyage to Portsmouth they are taken to the Fyffes ripening rooms in Baskingstoke before reaching us at Riverford farms.
Nutrition
They are a great source of potassium, fibre and niacin, have a high energy value and can help ward off cramps after exercise. They also contain vitamins A and C.
