Remember: 1/2 cup quinoa needs 3/4 cup water. Add one cup water to the bottom of the pressure cooker. Cook with HIGH pressure. Set timer for 1 minute. CANCEL Keep Warm mode. Wait 10 minutes EXACTLY, no more. Release remaining pressure in the pot. SHAZAM!
You have perfect quinoa.
THUMBS UP THIS VIDEO if you found any of it helpful.
I overcooked A LOT of quinoa before I learned the trick to getting it perfectly cooked. In this video, I demonstrate how to pressure cook quinoa in a bowl AND in a Mason jar.

I have a new mini and yes, you can cancel keep warm before you start cooking. My original IP did not have a keep warm function at all. Now I have the six quart and the three quart. I learned my basic IP stuff from you. Good to see you.

Very helpful - especially about the rinsing off of the saponin coating of off the quinoa. A big THANK-YOU to your auntie for passing on the tip to you! :) It beats all the rubbing and rinsing for 5 minutes at the sink till the soapy stuff is completely washed off.

I have ADHD and cooking is a challenge! I could walk in another room to pick up my charged phone and start cleaning out a closet only to be reminded of the stove disaster by the smoke alarm. I hate being tied to the kitchen so cooking was hated... until the Instant Pot came into my life!! :)

Same! I’ve got the neurodivegent trifecta, autism, ADD and OCD, and the stress, worry and just failing bc I’m distracted, is immensely helped with the IP. Tho I have on way to many occasions tried to make chicken stock only to realize the next am I forgot about it and it’s ruined. it’s that 120 min cook time (which is more like 3 hrs with the pressure build up and release) which messes me up. If I don’t set a loud alarm, it’s going get ruined.

That's actually a really cool way to do it. Won't have to clean the insert. I'd say the real advantage to cooking any grain in an IP is consistency. Once you have your formula, it does the job perfect every time. On a stovetop there's a lot of wiggle room for things to go wrong, plus people living in different altitudes have to adjust recipes accordingly. IP has its own internal pressure regardless. I love this method thanks!

Hi Jill! Thank you for all of your great videos! I'm trying to find a way to make rice and steamed veggies at the same time in my Instant Pot. The veggies will only take a minute or two, so I'm trying to figure out if I could open the instant pot before the rice is done (maybe at 20 minutes instead of 22 for brown rice), then add veggies, let it regain pressure and then cook for another minute? But then if I use the slow pressure release, it might overcook the veggies. Maybe I put the veggies after the pressure has gone down on it's own, and the keep the lid closed for a few minutes and it might have the effect of steaming? What do you think?

Get your Groove Thing, indeed! I just made some red quinoa, on the stovetop. If I was "cooking in bulk" to freeze, I would use the iPot. As for rinsing, I've found it depends on the brand...some really need rinsing, some don't. If I buy it in bulk, it always needs a good rinse/soak. I will use my iPot to cook rice/grains/beans "in bulk" for the freezer, because it will take less time and make less of a mess.... Ooooh, I found a really good cookbook....VEGAN UNDER PRESSURE by Jill Nussinow...that covers the basics of Pressure Cooking and seasoning...and has great recipes, to boot...and it's pretty to look at......Keep on cookin', Jill...

Girl, you need a wide mouth s/s or plastic canning funnel when you have messy things to transfer into a jar - works like a charm! I rinse and cook my quinoa like I would rice with the same ratio of grain to water. I've made batches of different rices in the iPot (WOOT WOOT! - love my 8 qt. iPot but not for grains). My Zojirushi makes better rice and quinoa in my opinion. Brown rice does not turn out sticky like it does in the iPot. I tried cooking the quinoa on the stove and it never worked to my satisfaction and that's when I decided to treat it like white rice and started cooking in the rice cooker. Perfect. That's how I roll with these types of grains.

MissBizyBea -it took me lots of trial and error to get my brown rice to come out nice and dry/separate. For me, 1 cup rice to 1-1/4 c water and then cook on high pressure for 28 minutes. Perfect, nice separate grains every time!

Ok, I just tried this! Although I feel like mine came to pressure much quicker and when the 10 minutes of rest was up there was no pressure to be released. I opened my Ipot and all the water was still in the mason jar. I put it back in for another minute of cooking, we will see if it works this time. Love your channel!!!

Have you cooked rice using this method? For me the big benefit would be using a time delay so it's hot and fresh when I get home. Also, I'm ready to buy my 1st IPOT and I'm debating between the 6 and 8 quart models. How would the 8qt model change your recipes if you are using the 6qt model? Thanks!
@JillMcKeever
@JillMcKeever 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim! I don't own the 8qt model but I've heard on the grapevine from iPot friends who own 8-qts that they do require a bit longer cooking times and more water. These increases are naturally due to the size. Unfortunately, Instant Pot has not created a user's manual for the 8-qt model with cooking time and water requirements. They're packing the old version of the manual that suits the smaller sizes. Not cool. How many people are you feeding? I have four hungry people in my house who don't mind eating leftovers. The 6-quart makes plenty of food for us. I do happen to own two instant pots but that's so I can cook different foods at the same time. Just myself; sometimes I cook for my girlfriend but I like to cook big once and have leftovers for several days. I've been on the fence about which rice/pressure cooker to get for a while, it hasn't been a huge priority. I've been WFPB(Go Engine 2) for 1.5 years and trying my best to be vegan for the 2 months, so since you have a similar mind set the IPOT makes sense to me. I just ordered the 6qt model and your book, and subscribed to your channel :) Thank you for your help!

Thanks for this video. I have always cooked my quinoa in a rice cooker, but now I will use my IP. And, I've heard about rinsing your quinoa, but never knew why, because it taste fine to me without washing it first. Now, I will rinse it, and see if I like it better. I always learn something new when I watch your videos! / About the mess when getting the rinsed quinoa into the jar, perhaps using a soup spoon would be a neater way to transfer it.

if you don't have a bowl or mason jar and want to cup 1/2 cup of quinoa in the instant pot alone. Is it still same ratios in this video of quinoa and water for 1 minute?
@JillMcKeever
@JillMcKeever Жыл бұрын
Honestly, it would be easier for you to cook that small amount of quinoa in a small saucepan with a lid. Quinoa doesn't take long to cook tender. And more honestly, the simmering time it would take to get the pressure up inside the Instant Pot® plus the cooking time, you'd probably end up with overcooked quinoa. Skip the iPot. Pull out a small saucepan and lid. You'll have more control and insurance of the quinoa coming out the way you like it. Humbly yours, Jill

I keep looking for anyone who talks about toasting the quinoa on the sauté function. I’ve always toasted it with stove top cooking bc it’s supposed to improve the flavor. I wonder does it make a difference when using the IP?
@JillMcKeever
@JillMcKeever 3 жыл бұрын
The Saute function is simply heating the inner pot, just like a pan on the stove. In the video, I showed cooking directly in the jars. I can imagine toasting the quinoa directly in the inner pot, then pouring into the jars then adding water. You could try that and see what happens.

Hi Jill~ I've never had Quinoa...does it come in mixed colors or did you mix yourself? Also I am trying to find heat resistant bowl & all I see(stainless steel) have silicone non-slip bottom. Would you direct me to name brand or where I can pick up one for IPot...I called BB&B & they couldn't help me. Target didn't know either. Hope I am not putting you out. Thank you. Can't wait to make this.

At my local grocery store, they sell it separated and mixed. I picked up the mixed quinoa because I'm not a fan of the white quinoa on its own. The red and black quinoa have a wild rice flavor. I prefer them.

@JillMcKeever 8 жыл бұрын
Silicone is made for heat. I don't know about the glue the manufacturer used to adhere it to the bowl. I wish I could remember where I bought my stainless steel bowls. I've had them for YEARS and YEARS. It would have been from somewhere cheap.

Jill, i love your videos. You are a real pleasure. Now my question for this class is about the "new generation" thingee. How do you turn off the keep warm before you have turned the cooker on? You'll probably come back with "Charlie, you dummy," but the fact is I'm confused. So help me out, darlin.

Good morning, Charlie! (My husband's name is Charlie.) So far ask I know, the DUO80 8-quart model is the only one, at this time, with the option to cancel the automatic keep warm mode. So, when we're setting the iPot for pressure cooking, press the MANUAL button twice. Notice how the Keep Warm/Cancel light toggles off and on? Same option exists for the Slow Cook button, and all those pre-programmed buttons, like soup, beans, porridge, steam. :D

@JillMcKeever

I didn't think one-half cup of quinoa is worth dirtying the whole inner pot. Also I figured someone could use the small bowl method for a one-bowl salad idea or they could pull out the bowl and recycle the pot water for other pressure cooking. Then I imagined someone might want to make the quinoa in a Mason jar, screw on a lid and move it to the icebox for later.
